    QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED AT ENTRY

    Diploma in Medical Laboratory or with equivalent education/work 
    Two years of experience in laboratory work performing laboratory procedures

    Skills, Abilities, Special licenses or Certificate

    Compassion: Empathy is necessary when working closely with patients who might be in pain or under emotional duress.
    Attention to Detail: Performing tests will require exact measurements and a good eye for detail, or the results could be false.
    Dexterity: Work with hands and will need skill to work with small vials, test tubes, and delicate lab equipment.
    Stamina: Lab technicians work long days on their feet, sometimes hunched over a workstation for long periods of time.
    Technical Skill: Need to understand complex lab machinery and computer programs used to conduct tests.

    Job Objective/Purpose
    Ensure provision of high-quality laboratory diagnostic services in the clinic as defined by Avenue Healthcare policies, protocols, procedures and standards.
     Key Responsibilities

    Ensure that the clinic has the necessary equipment and ensure that they are in good working condition and submit a monthly equipment status report to the Branch Manager.
    Timely and accurate billing of laboratory services.
    Stock management:

    Do monthly stock takes of lab supplies and submit a stock take and short expiry report to the Branch Manager
    Timely ordering and receiving of stock from the lab store to prevent stock outs

    Proper storage of lab supplies.
    Ensure that Avenue corporate governance policies are adhered to.
    Prevent, detect and report any fraud or criminal activity
    Fully implement audit recommendations and attain satisfactory ratings in subsequent audits
    Review and act on quality indicator reports (IQC &EQA)

    Carrying out tests based on outlined SOPs & policies.Ensure all sentinel incidents/events are recorded and reported to the Branch Manager within 24 hours using the provided tools.
    Ensure that the fridge temperatures and ambient temperature and humidity are charted twice daily, and any error reported to the Branch Manager.
    Ensure timely escalation of any urgent out of stock items to the laboratory store.
    Ensure that any issue pertaining quality is escalated to the Lab Quality Manager.
    Infection control.

    Maintain and enforce infection control standards when carrying out lab tests.
    There is proper disposal of medical waste
    Equipment and other laboratory surfaces are properly disinfected with the right disinfectants

    Ensure client satisfaction through high quality of service, effective communication, prompt feedback and escalation of any unresolved issues to the Branch Manager.     
    Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
    Ensure adequate knowledge of all Avenue policies, procedures and systems as outlined in the HRMIS.
    Prevention of lab related errors by following the laid down policies and procedures on sample handling during pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical phases of testing.

    Scientist, Quantitative Genetics Specialist

    The Quantitative Genetics Specialist will support CGIAR-NARES breeding teams to achieve higher rates of genetic gain and extract maximum value from new and proven technologies, tools, and services. The successful candidate will have a strong background and experience in quantitative genetics and biometrics with a deep understanding of how to manipulate plant breeding schemes by using the latest technologies. The successful candidate will work within the ABI Quantitative Genetics team, across CGIAR centers – in a wide range of regions and crops – to optimize breeding schemes according to elements of the breeder’s equation to achieve the highest possible rate of genetic gain per dollar invested and per unit of time using simulation technologies, optimization and applied quantitative genetics experience, among other means.
    By providing one-on-one consultation, workshops and online communication via the platform’s purpose built ‘toolbox,’ the successful candidate will contribute to raising standards of breeding methods and operations at CGIAR and NARES breeding programs in line with targets set by ABI.
    The position will be based at CIMMYT-Nairobi Campus in Kenya, involve significant international travel, and will report to the ABI Breeding Optimization Lead.

    Specific duties:

    Lead CGIAR-NARES breeding teams to create awareness and support the adoption of new tools and approaches for optimizing breeding pipelines.
    Work with other quantitative genetics specialists to design and evaluate new and current breeding schemes through simulation, retrospective analysis, and pilot testing.
    Develop strategy in collaboration with CGIAR-NARES breeding teams and other stakeholders and support the development of plans to optimize the use of new breeding tools and methodologies.
    Support CGIAR-NARES breeding teams to ensure that target product profiles drive breeding activities and that breeding efforts are aligned to these breeding targets.
    Support the CGIAR-NARES breeding teams to set up disciplined processes to select parental germplasm in a targeted manner, as well as identify and implement ways to overcome resource, logistical, and biological constraints to shorten the breeding cycle time and increase the accuracy of data prior to selection of parents.
    Contribute to the development of a training strategy and content to mentor and consult with CGIAR-NARES breeding teams.
    Lead and contribute to both virtual and hands-on training and mentorship activities targeted at CGIAR-NARES breeding teams in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
    Providing support to internal and external reviews and evaluations.
    Contributing to publications derived from the breeding optimization project.

    Requirements

    PhD in plant breeding, quantitative genetics, biometrics, or related fields.
    Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
    Experience in private industry and/or an advanced modern breeding program is a plus.
    In-depth understanding of practical breeding applications and logistical constraints that will be relevant to breeding programs targeting the developing world (i.e., CGIAR centers, national systems, and private sector organizations).
    Expertise in statistical analysis software (R, mixed modeling, perhaps machine learning, etc.) and a creative and innovative mindset.
    A good understanding of quantitative genetics and underlying mathematical theory.
    Good reporting and communication skills in English.

    Job Summary

Their role includes explaining procedures to participants, obtaining informed consent, and collaborating with study managers and other research staff. The phlebotomist will be expected to ensure compliance with safety standards, promptly reports any issues, and contributes to the integrity and success of the research study.
    This position requires meticulous attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to participant safety and comfort thus contributing to BMI’s overall objective for advancing scientific knowledge and improving healthcare outcomes through rigorous and high-quality research practices.
    Responsibilities

    Participant Interaction: Explain procedures to research study participants to ensure they are informed and comfortable and confirm informed consent prior to sample collection as well as adherence to ethical standards on working with human subjects
    Sample Collection: Collect biometrics from study participants, perform venipuncture and other techniques to collect bio-samples from study participant following standardized protocols, as well as timely and accurate collection of samples.
    Sample Handling and Processing: Label samples accurately and efficiently, ensure samples are stored and transported correctly to maintain integrity, support with sample processing and ensure proper labelling, handling and documentation of samples
    Data Entry and Documentation: Maintain correct and complete detailed records in compliance with study protocols and regulatory requirements.

    Requirements

    Diploma or degree in Phlebotomy or related field

    Valid practice license.
    A minimum of two years’ experience in a healthcare setting with experience in research preferred.
    Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures, including sample collection, labelling, and storage, as well as laboratory safety practices.
