    Biostatistician

    Position summary: The biostatistician will be responsible for the design, analysis and reporting of research projects conducted by the AMHRTF and partners.
     Responsibilities:

    Conduct statistical analysis (analyse, summarize and interpret) of quantitative data for projects using SPSS, STATA or relevant data analysis software.
    Process data analysis outputs and perform interim and final analyses, based on author/investigator instructions for publication in journals or reports or presentations in workshops or conferences.
    Write detailed data analysis plans and descriptions of analyses and findings for grant applications, research protocols or manuscripts.
    Calculation of sample size for proposed studies.
    Manage all statistical aspects of projects and advise researchers on study designs and analysis at project conception, grant application, implementation and during analysis.
    Conduct predetermined frequent data quality checks and come up with ways of solving any issues that arise.
    Assign work and provide guidance to data entry clerks.
    Participate in designing data collection tools, questionnaires, and data collection templates.
    Keep abreast of new statistical methods
    In consultation with the supervisor, work within the projected timelines to ensure the objectives (in relation to analysis) of assigned projects are met.

    Qualifications and Experience:

    At least a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics or related field in a recognized university.
    Minimum of two-year experience as a statistician in medical research. Prior data analysis skills in clinical trials and longitudinal data are a priority for this position.  
    Understanding of data management principles for clinical trials and medical research
    Excellent working knowledge of SPSS and STATA software
    Applied knowledge of advanced statistical models, such as generalized linear models, survival analyses and mixed models
    Proficiency in report writing

    JOB PURPOSE
    Reporting to the Technical Manager, supervises, assigns, reviews and participates in the work of staff responsible for providing laboratory services in support of water treatment & sewer operations; ensures work quality and adherence to established policies and procedures; provide training on proper laboratory test procedures and sample collection processes; and performs the more technical and complex tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility
    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Routine, ad-hoc and timely collection testing and analysis of water samples as required by Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB).
    Prepare and submit water quality test results and analysis and maintain test reports.
    Advise the technical team on the water quality levels and appropriate actions to be taken.
    Operate and maintain water quality testing and analysis laboratory.
    Sustain quality standards and specifications.
    Operate and maintain safe custody of materials, tools and equipment for water quality testing and analysis.
    Prepare chemical mixing and dosing schedules and instructions.
    Instruct and supervise operators for water treatment works and reservoir attendants on water quality, chemical mixing, and dosing.
    In liaison with the Human Resource Department, train and or recommend for training new or existing personnel or operators for water treatment works and reservoir attendants on Water quality, chemical mixing, and dosing.
    Collect review chemical mixing and dosing schedules and reports from branches.
    Collect, review, chemical delivery, usage, and chemical quantity balances reports from branches.
    Request collect and deliver chemicals to the water treatment stations and reservoirs.Ensure, operationalize, and observe approved occupational safety and healthy rules and guidelines reporting any breach to head of human resource department through human resource officer.
    Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on all the above and or as prescribed by Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB).
    Any other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor from time to time.
    Raise the necessary Procurement Request related to water quality Laboratory and ensure that water treatment chemicals and reagents are always available

    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with a bias on Water quality control
    In-depth skills and knowledge in Water quality control/Analysis
    Understanding of WHO/WASREB/KEBS drinking water standards guidelines.
    Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, at least 1 years in Humanitarian or working in water quality control laboratory as Laboratory Technologist, Water Laboratory Technician or Water Quality Analyst

    Required Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biological, Microbiological and Applied Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology or related field from a recognized institution;
    Proficiency in computer applications.

    The scientist will work in a team from a range of disciplines and with a suite of collaborators, leading and supporting a range of empirical research projects related to the economics of rural development, livelihood resilience, risk mitigation, social protection and graduation, nutrition, and access to markets and services.

    The scientist filling this position will be part of the team that developed the Index Based Livestock Insurance (IBLI) product as they continue their agenda of testing and improving the value proposition of drought risk financing products for pastoral regions across micro- (e.g., the Index Based Livestock Insurance product), meso- (e.g., Kenya Livestock Insurance Program) and macro- (e.g., Africa Risk Capacity) scales. This agenda includes, but is not limited to, assessing the relevance of these products in new regions, improving understanding of demand for such products, integrating insurance-like products into social protection programming, and bundling insurance with complimentary goods and services.

    The scientist will also work on an agenda aimed at developing low-cost approaches to data collection and dissemination in remote regions with applications for improve pastoral access to information and services, impact assessment, and crisis surveillance. This agenda includes working with stakeholders to better understand needs, developing and implementing new tools for data collection and dissemination, and partnering with implementors to integrate services and processes.

    The Platform

    The gender platform, hosted by ILRI in Nairobi, brings together CGIAR centres and numerous partners from around the world in a collaborative effort to make CGIAR the thought leader for gender in agricultural research for development (AR4D) and support the transformation of agriculture and food systems to be equitable, sustainable and climate resilient. The GENDER Platform aims to (1) generate high-quality research-based evidence to influence the broader AR4D ecosystem to integrate gender and achieve gender-equal outcomes (2) create an enabling environment in which gender equality is embraced as a core principle in priority setting, research and communication within CGIAR and its partners, and (3) facilitate the capacity development of CGIAR and its partners to carry out gender-integrated and gender-strategic research that is transformative and strengthens global, regional and national food systems. The Platform builds on and expands the work of CGIAR’s current gender platform.

    Responsibilities

    Strategic Planning and management

    Working with the Platform Director and the Platform management committee plan strategies and develop goals for the platform
    Meet with the Platform Director and the platform’s management committee regularly to outline scientific and technical goals
    Make detailed plans to achieve scientific and technical goals set up by the Platform top managers
    Manage consultants and develop research and information-based resources for diverse audiences, as directed by the Platform Director and the management committee
    Provide technical assistance to module leaders, research teams and partners when required
    Monitor progress of the various research projects, draft operational reports and review research performed to ensure quality
    Provide oversight on database development and maintenance
    Ensure that science done by the platform complies with set standards, procedures and meet ethical requirements

    Coordination roles

    Promote engagement between the different modules to ensure science work is integrated
    Maintain a good data base of consultants and manage relationships with consultants
    Update the platform on any new funding opportunities and actively liaise with teams to ensure appropriate response to new funding opportunities
    Provide stewardship of the research products by platform members

    Reporting and communicating science

    Meet with new clients and develop relationships to propose new research and development
    In liaison with the communication department and scientists, develop communication material explaining research findings at the completion of each project, for donors and other target audiences
    Ensure effective information resources are available for key audiences and that resources are available online

    Provide technical and policy comment based on the work of the platform when required by the media or key stakeholders and donors
    Represent the platform in a wide range of environments, including academic, policy and the media

    Requirements

    PhD in a relevant discipline, including agricultural economics, economics, public policy, sociology, political science, or other social sciences;
    5 years of experience working in a research or science-based organization
    Internationally recognized expertise in gender and development policy research, preferably in the food and agriculture sphere;
    Evidence of scientific publications
    Evidence of high-quality science communication products for different audiences
    Record of past successful research and/or development projects
    Strong leadership and management skills;
    Ability to connect policy research into policy options and to get those options into policy dialogues;
    Exposure to Africa and Asia with a knowledge of the CGIAR;
