    Selection Criteria

    Knowledge of the Fisheries and Blue Economy development and management policies, Fisheries Act and other related statutes and international conventions; and shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results;
    Master’s degree in the relevant discipline from a recognized institution is an added advantage;
    Five year working experience in a relevant field;
    Attended a Strategic Leadership Development programme from a recognized institution.

    The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Post-Doctoral Scientist to lead the implementation of epidemiological studies proposed under Work Package 4 of TAHSSL II project which aims to develop and test a feasible, testable and scalable CBPP control program in a pastoral community. He/she work with a team of scientists from the project as well as key actors from the public and private sectors that are responsible for delivering CBPP control options in the target areas. He/she will therefore provide critical linkages between research and development communities
    Key responsibilities:

    Conduct desk studies to document available CBPP control options and identify barriers that hinder the deployment of a successful CBPP control program in a pastoral setting considering socio-economic, policy and other infrastructural challenges
    Develop and validate a dynamic model that simulates CBPP transmission dynamics in a pastoral production system and use it to examine competing control measures that can be used to control the disease
    Lead the implementation of a CBPP control program in a pastoral production system in northern Kenya, with appropriate monitoring and evaluation tools that can be used to assess process and impact indicators
    Coordinate the implementation of cost/benefit analyses on competing CBPP control measures to aid the prioritization of interventions that can be promoted for use in the CBPP control program
    Manage the data collected during the implementation of CBPP control program and use these to develop the project progress reports, journal manuscripts and scientific conference presentations
    Contribute to the development of proposals and resource mobilization efforts

    ROLE DESCRIPTION 
    The primary responsibility of this position will be to coordinate the co-creation, implementation and interpretation of ecological monitoring approaches for SOKNOT, that will enable the Programme establish trends and underlying causes of conservation and environmental outcomes and impact of the Programme’s work. 
    This position will work closely with WWF staff, partners and stakeholders to provide guidance, training and support to develop and implement data collection and analysis that informs adaptive management and contributes to improving the impact of the Programme’s work.
    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    Oversee the delivery of nature-related conservation outcome & impact for SOKNOT-UNGANISHA, such as functional and structural connectivity, habitat health, and wildlife numbers.

    Prepare, support and document innovative approaches for the ecological and natural-science based data collection and interpretation and ongoing monitoring; 
    Further develop capacities and provide training and mentoring of WWF, partner and WMA/Conservancy staff for the assessment and monitoring of wildlife, habitats and other natural resources
    Develop ecological monitoring and research capacities among WWF and partner staff to facilitate monitoring, research and evaluation through training, mentoring and workshops on key ecological research approaches, methods, tools, data analysis and interpretation and related templates
    Design science-based monitoring approaches to assess and capture ecological impacts on wildlife, habitats, functional and structural connectivity and other natural resources and promote the involvement of local communities, WMA/conservancy staff and game scouts through community-based monitoring systems
    Support WWF, partner and WMA/Conservancy staff with the installation, monitoring and interpretation of data/information acquired via Artificial Intelligence (AI) such as camera traps, satellite and drone images etc 
    Collaborate with remote sensing specialists of WWF Country Offices and other organizations for the monitoring of ecological parameters; 
    Cooperate with and support the WWF M&E staff in developing and maintaining a science-based monitoring and evaluation framework for ecological project impacts on wildlife, habitats and natural resources
    Collaborate with the Social Science Coordinator in facilitating the integration of participatory approaches to ecological monitoring wherever possible, by providing guidance, tools and training to field teams and partner organizations, to enhance uptake of M&E function in the landscape;  
    Provide expert advice and guidance on quantitative research methods and tools that inform SOKNOT-UNGANISHA strategies and improve the delivery of landscape projects on the ground; 
    Support WWF, partners and WMA/Conservancy staff in the collection and interpretation of weather and climate data and correlate those with data on wildlife, habitats and other natural resources to determine climate change impacts and priority areas for climate change adaptation in wildlife, habitat and natural resource management; 
    Lead the data collection and interpretation on human-wildlife conflict data, wildlife populations, habitat health, functional and structural connectivity and climate change-related indicators 
    Collaborate closely with global technical advisors of the WWF Network and Practices; and consultants as necessary
    Champion the use of ecological data to inform decision-making at all levels 
    Communicate, in liaison with the Communication staff where necessary, findings (from research, monitoring and evaluation activities) across WWF and partner organizations to support learning and adaptation
    Contribute to key knowledge outputs (reports, peer review literature, and communications) that communicate methodological development and ecological/conservation impacts
    Support the WWF M&E Staff to summarize key findings and contributing evidence to proposal development and reporting to donors where required including the use of indicators on biodiversity, structural and functional connectivity, climate change and others
    Support WWF, Partner, WMA/conservancy staff in the further development, implementation, monitoring and documentation of environmental safeguards as outlined in WWF’s Environmental and Social Safeguard Framework 
    Advise on the development of ecological research projects and partnerships
    Regularly liaise with other Government- and Non-Government organizations, national and international research institutions and local experts
    Work closely with the Social Science Coordinator and other WWF Staff to enable an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to impact monitoring, which demonstrates impact against the triple challenge (biodiversity, climate adaptation, livelihoods).

    PROFILE
     Knowledge and Qualification

    Postgraduate/graduate degree (or equivalent) in relevant field and/or proven experience in natural science/ or environmental conservation
    Demonstrable, substantial practical experience of working on conservation related research projects or impact monitoring in a low-income country especially concerning community-based natural resource management and monitoring and associated adaptive management 
    Practical experience in participatory monitoring, evaluation and research approaches
    Quantitative research experience, including design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of findings through reports, publications and presentations. 
    A background in conservation ecology/ biodiversity conservation research and practice is highly desirable.

    Position Summary
    Wildlife Works seeks to recruit a Chief Social Scientist supporting all Social Research, Monitoring and Development who will work under the functional guidance of the Global Director of Conservation. The Chief Social Scientist will primarily spearhead, provide leadership and support on issues related to social research, monitoring and development for Wildlife Works’ growing REDD+ (and related schemes) portfolio across Africa, Asia and Latin America. The successful applicant will be responsible for designing Wildlife Works’ Social-related strategies and provide advisory support all through the implementation of for all REDD+ (and related) projects globally. S/he will also support the Global Director of Conservation in activities related to research, documentation, dissemination and outreach, and policy development on all social matters. This role requires a dynamic team player with broad understanding of social issues in different contexts, excellent analytical skills, the ability to support multiple initiatives simultaneously, and experience working globally across cultural, geographic and time zone boundaries. S/he shall be expected to be flexible and work within the existing structures, professionally and ethically with competence, accountability and integrity. Preference will be given to candidates in Vermont, US or Nairobi, Kenya.
    Responsibilities:

    Define, design and support execution of all Wildlife Works’ social and community-related strategies for all REDD+ (and related) projects globally, under guidance from Wildlife Works’ Global Director of Conservation. This involves evaluating various survey instruments, methods and monitoring protocols to determine the most suitable ones for each project objective or target species considering scientific rigour, cost, ease-of-execution, and replicability
    Support Wildlife Works’ projects’ validation and verification audits, particularly ensuring soundness of the community-related sections of all project design documents and/or monitoring reports, plus helping resolve social impact-related questions from clients or auditors under guidance from the Global Director of Conservation and VP for Carbon Development
    Write, and/or support writing of, concise and informative internal reports plus scientific, peer-reviewed publications, including dissemination of lessons learned and contributions to best practices on social issues from all Wildlife Works’ projects globally for research, knowledge and learning purposes
    Link with relevant REDD+ or social-related policy processes internationally, regionally or nationally, e.g., UNREDD FPIC guidelines, IFC Performance Standards and World Bank Safeguards, to ensure Wildlife Works’ interests, opinions and positions on MRV related to social impacts assessment and reporting are articulated in the best way
    Develop and maintain professional networks, including research organisations, NGOs and relevant public agencies, build research partnerships and propel social research and monitoring excellence at Wildlife Works
    Support desk research and/or rapid reconnaissance field visits to prospective REDD+ (and related) projects globally whenever needed, describing their community profiles (e.g., socio-cultural High Conservation Values and biocultural aspects) including key drivers of forest loss and potential impacts, plus screening for potential social impacts and risks
    As appropriate, seek strategic co-funding and grants for undertaking offshoot and/or student social science research that augments core business research work
    Represent Wildlife Works in various local and international meetings and forums.

    Requirements

    Master’s or higher degree (PhD a distinct advantage) in an environmental or social science related field including natural resources, anthropology- or biocultural-related studies, community development or other similar fields
    A minimum of five years’ work experience post-MSc (preferably international and/or with clear application) in academia, the private sector, a development research organisation or other institution undertaking research, monitoring and/or impact assessment.
    Experience with undertaking large-scale and long-term social research and monitoring linked with environmental conservation and community development interventions, plus interfacing with external partners, donors, local communities and public agencies
    Good understanding of social research and surveys, monitoring standards, principles and frameworks, and social impact assessments
    Demonstrated familiarity with socio-economic or cultural impacts of various drivers of forest loss and mitigation options including Payment for Ecosystem Services
    Demonstrated ability for organising, carrying out and guiding sociological fieldwork in remote locations, involving long-term engagement with local authorities and IPLCs
    High level of proficiency with MS Office Suite (including Access) and other core research programs like mapping (ArcMap or QGIS), statistics (SPSS, R or similar), project management tools and other specialised tools (like SMART, Distance, Wrike, MIRADI etc)
    Experience with undertaking systematic reviews, meta-analysis or other forms of evidence synthesis
    Excellent social research, analytical and writing skills, both popular and scientific, with high levels of attention to detail
    Candidate should be fluent in English and have a near-native level of either French or Spanish; a working knowledge of the third one will be a distinct advantage.

    Minimum Requirements:

    To develop a nature-based surveillance system derived from semiochemicals for legume pests to reduce farmer reliance on environmentally damaging insecticide for crop protection.
    Specific Duties
    The successful candidate is expected to:

    Field test Clavigralla aggregation pheromone for optimization and use in biological control with natural enemies.
    Identify a natural source of the aggregation pheromone for use by small holder farmers.
    Elucidate the sensory biology of pheromone detection by Clavigralla and its key natural enemies.
    Investigate the role of background odors in pheromone detection in different cropping systems.

    Requirements/Qualifications

    A PhD degree in Entomology/ Chemistry with a strong focus on Chemical Ecology of PlantInsect Interactions.
    At least 2 years’ post PhD experience working in a chemical ecology laboratory with field experience.
    Experience working on legume pests a plus.
    Excellent publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals required.
    Excellent written and oral communication essential for the position.
