    Overall purpose of the job

    To provide research and programmatic leadership to the Behavioural and Chemical Ecology Unit.

    Specific Duties:

    Contributes to Centre’s efforts to engage with global stakeholders in research and capacity building.
    Manages human, fiscal and physical resources of the Unit.
    Conducts research to develop semiochemical-based management tools for improved food production, animal and human health.
    Conducts research to promote use of beneficial organisms that conserve biodiversity.
    Actively seek and secure external support for the activities of the Unit, including resources to develop and grow a personal research portfolio.
    Enhance scientific productivity of the Unit through mentoring and supervising scientists, postgraduate students, and high-quality publications.
    Initiate periodic reviews of the performance of the Unit to ensure relevance and quality.
    Act as a spokesperson and representative of the Unit.
    Ensure the Unit meets its legal and reporting responsibilities to all stakeholders including national licensing authorities and donors.

    Requirements/Qualifications

     PhD in Chemistry from a reputable university, with a strong background in organic chemistry or related sciences but preferably with expertise in Chemical Ecology plus appropriate or additional education in organic spectroscopy.
     Ten (10) years’ experience gained at a senior level in either a research organization or university.
     Track-record in chemical ecology and interdisciplinary research in tropical insect science.

    Other desirable attributes

     Excellent publication track record.
     Track record of writing successful proposals for large grants.
     Proven record of managing large resources (both financial and human) in a research environment.
     Experience in capacity building through supervision and mentorship of MSc and PhD students.
     Excellent communication skills are mandatory.

    Job Role

    Analyze all W.I.P. product samples daily for quality, durability, safety and known product specifications before the final stage of production and record Quality inspection results. 
    To verify quality of raw materials, in-process and finished product against specifications.  
    Identify and liaise with production for the segregation of non-conforming products at the production lines then update on daily log sheets and other process documents.  
    Observe finished goods handling and identify practices likely to cause damage to the product.  
    Inspects transport vessels (trucks and containers) to ascertain their condition prior to loading/stuffing with Finished goods.  
    Verify proper documentation of all products before dispatch.  
    Perform housekeeping in line with Gemba Kaizen Principles.  
    Give timely feedback to production on quality inspection results and propose improvements to the production process. 
    Update Quality Management Database e.g., SAP with inline process inspection, incoming material inputs.  
    Training the production Team on Quality Control measures to improve product excellence. 
    Keeping measurement equipment operating accurately by following calibration requirements and calling for repairs.  
    Monitoring the use of equipment to ensure it is safe and discard by reporting any that does not meet requirement.  
    Updating job knowledge by engaging in educational opportunities (toolbox talks) and regular training. 
    Checking that the assembly or production lines adhere to standards and procedures and comply with legal requirements. 
    Perform incoming material inspection, review blueprints and specifications to compare produced goods.

    Position Purpose

    The person is responsible for the overall management of the laboratory. The position is also responsible for ensuring provision of efficient, speedy, and accurate laboratory services (tests and procedures) to assist in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating patients.

    Key Responsibilities
    The responsibilities of the Laboratory Technologist include but are not limited to:
    General Management

    Ensure effective implementation of protocols, standards, procedures, rules, and regulations that are consistent with laboratory and clinical services.
    Ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the laboratory services.
    Ensure that weekly plans/schedules and reports are prepared and handed in a timely manner.
    Produce timely and accurate reports in line SOPs.
    Manage financial and material resources allocated to the unit in a prudent manner.
    Ensure all laboratory equipment is kept clean and in good working condition and ensure regular routine and preventive maintenance of the laboratory equipment is carried out.

    Laboratory Duties

    Adhere to protocols, standardize, procedures, rules and regulations used in the analysis of specimens and in medical laboratory experiments.
    Undertake periodic evaluation and modification of procedures, techniques and tests used in the analysis of specimens.
    In accordance with MOH an LCA protocols, receive and process patient specimens, including but not limited to, stools, blood, urine, and respiratory swabs.
    Provide patient education about the relevant specimen collection and testing.
    Perform the appropriate analyses and tests while maintaining timely processing and dispatching of results.
    Collect samples that need to be sent to a higher-level facility for specialized testing, such as a referral hospital or national centers for research and testing.
    Conduct chemical analysis of body fluids as per instructions by the Clinical Officer.
    Analyze samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction.
    Identify and communicate abnormal patient conditions by alerting
    supervisory personnel and the clinician; report mandated information to the Ministry of Health or other designated officials.
    Prepare purchase orders for the procurement of necessary medications, equipment, and supplies from vendors and suppliers.
    Track order progress through payment, shipping, and reconciliation.
    Establish and monitor programs to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.
    Provide technical information about test results to physicians, family members and researchers.
    Ensure Superior Customer Experience to all internal and external clients. Health and Safety Systems
    Ensure compliance with all relevant safety and infection control policies and procedures and ensure tidiness of laboratory rooms, benches, and proper house-keeping.
    Ensure adherence to safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, clinicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures; comply with local and national legal regulations.
    Maintain quality results by running standards and controls, verify equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble- shooting; calibrate equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitor quality control measures and protocols.

    Documents / Records

    Document all patient information and test results in the appropriate database and records.
    Document all processes and results to ensure availability of supportive information.

    Key Responsibilities

    Assist in the planning and implementation of laboratory activities required for CHS-supported HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment programs in Kenya, including baseline laboratory assessments and laboratory capacity development
    Coordinate implementation of laboratory services to support implementation of quality HIV prevention and treatment interventions
    Provide technical assistance to facility-level laboratory personnel, including regular and systematic observation of laboratory testing procedures, and on-going bench-level supportive supervision and instruction
