    Responsibilities

    Receive, verify prescriptions and dispense drugs in a timely manner within approved standards and procedures.
    Contact the physician immediately for inaccuracy and illegibility in a prescription order, document errors and communicate them to the nursing and pharmacy staff
    Verify expiry dates of drugs prior to dispensing medication to patients/customers.
    Check that every label placed on the medications contains the correct patient name, drug, quantity and directions.
    Compound extemporaneous preparations and mix certain intravenous medications as per laid down procedures.
    Counsel patients on drug administration and use of devices for optimum wellness and recovery.
    Receive, return and update drug credits on the system in a timely manner.
    Deliver drug discharges to patients in the ward where applicable
    Communicate out of stock and non-stock effectively and timely to prescriber and nurse and provide alternative choice or make arrangements to order promptly.
    Comply and observe the environmental health and safety measures and regulations by proper handling, storage and dispensation of medications
    Record, monitor and update the expiry list of medications in timely manner.
    Conduct nursing floor inspections once a month for all ward stock, solutions and patient medication left behind
    Complete documentation of Interventions, Medication errors and Near Miss, Adverse events, Medication queries, Patient complaints or any other incidents and forward to relevant office
    Perform random medication checks daily and Monitor variance levels in your respective satellites.
    Compile daily satellite reports.
    Carry out regular satellite stock-take exercise.
    Report any special indicators allocated.
    Maintain and update personal drug knowledge data base to ensure accurate provision of pharmaceutical care of general disease states as well as specialized knowledge in the assigned area of expertise
    Participate in educational activities and departmental meetings. 

    Requirements

    Diploma in Pharmaceutical Technology from a recognized institution
    Practicing License from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board
    Computer literate
    Able to communicate with medical professionals
    Able to work with a team of people from various backgrounds and training
    Excellent customer service skills and empathetic to patients of all ages
    Good interpersonal skills
    Culturally sensitive
    Able to keep up with pharmaceutical developments and Continuous Medical Education programmes

    Job Description
    Under the guidance and supervision of the senior Pharmacist or designate, the pharmacist assistant will be involved in the day today management of the dispensing pharmacy operations.
    Key Responsibilities

    Oversee the correct dispensing of pharmaceutical commodities at the dispensing pharmacy units.
    Ensure there is adequate health supplies and drugs in the dispensing pharmacy stores and that dispensing pharmacy is well managed with no pilferages.
    Ensure all standard operating procedures within the supply chain are well implemented and adhered to.
    Monitor prescribing trends by analyzing prescriptions and alerting the senior pharmacist of any anomalies or cases of irrational prescribing practices.
    Ensure cold chain maintenance and monitoring is done regularly to ensure temperature sensitive drugs are correctly monitored while under storage.
    Prepare all inventory management reports including MOH monthly reports for Malaria, TB and HIV by 5th of every month.
    Maintain the EMR system inventory at the dispensing pharmacy units and report any technical interruptions to the EMR manager or the senior pharmacist for follow and correction.
    Monitor and maintain the tracer drug list of commodities and report their availability to clinical team biweekly.
    Attend departmental meetings as may be required from time to time.
    Participate in the training and mentorship programs within the department unit where members learn from each other to improve the quality of services.

    Main Purpose of the Role
    Reporting to the Patient Care Manager, the incumbent shall be tasked to; Oversee the drugs and medication acquisition and distribution at the hospital.
    Dispense drugs and medication to patients while providing drug information and education to them.
    Key Responsibilities

    Scrutinize Patient Treatment Sheets and Prescriptions for suitability of prescribed drugs in relation to dosing accuracy, drug interaction and route of administration and provide drug information to patients, doctors, nurses and other medical staff.
    Timely and accurate posting dispensed drugs for billing purposes.
    Place orders for stock replenishment to the Procurement department in order to maintain optimal stock levels.
    Participates in regular drug expiry monitoring in the pharmacy to identify and document items with expiry of less than the required duration of time allowed.
    Compound, re-package and dilute drugs according to laid down guidelines.
    Counsel patients appropriately to ensure adherence to drug therapy.
    Participate in stock take exercise at the pharmacy and ensure timely explanation of stock variances.
    Enter prescriptions orders into the appropriate hospital software.
    Document adverse drug reactions on patients.
    Receive drugs and verify against the Stock transfer printout
    Shelve of items appropriately especially expired drugs.
    Perform stock counts and stock movement analysis
    Answer to calls from patients who might need assistance or advise on drugs
    Prepare weekly and monthly management reports and submit them within the agreed timeframes.
    File prescriptions as required.
    Ensure compliance with the relevant authorities including the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

    Knowledge and Experience Required

    Diploma or higher in Pharmaceutical Technology.
    Proficiency in supply chain management and pharmacy operations.
    Minimum Three years’ experience post enrollment in a similar role.
    Licensing by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya
    Member of the Kenya Pharmaceutical Association in good standing

    Academic Qualifications

    O-levels/A-Levels
    Diploma in Pharmacy Technology
    Possess a valid practicing license
    Member of Kenya Pharmaceutical Association
    Computer skills
    At least 2 years of experience in a similar position
    Hospital experience is essential.

    Functional Skills:

    Familiarity with hospital pharmacy functioning
    Good knowledge of physiology, pharmacology, and pharmaceuticals
