    The Position
    An exciting opportunity has arisen within Kesho for an innovative, effective, self-driven Programme Officer to design, implement and evaluate Kesho’s Child Protection programme to meet our strategic objectives. The position is for an initial contract period of 1 year and renewable subject to performance and availability of funds. The position location is Kesho office, Kilifi.
    Main Responsibilities
    Managerial Duties
    Plan, coordinate and execute Child Protection & Family Support Programme activities as envisioned in the
    Strategic Plan and as per Donor agreement.
    Design and initiate new projects and interventions.
    Identify potential partnerships to implement programmes. Liaise with other agencies/NGOs/government bodies/donors to ensure coordination and implementation of common standards in the field.
    Provide technical guidance and direction to relevant staff for effective planning, implementation and monitoring of Child Protection related activities.
    Promoting best safeguarding practice across the wider partnership network.
    Represent Kesho Kenya in meetings with government officials and other actors, to advocate and promote programme goals and objectives, and communicate with major partners on policies.
    Develop training programmes and assist in capacity building for staff and partners.
    Ensuring the CP policy is implemented and promoted within Kesho Kenya.
    Operational Duties
    Ensuring all staff are familiar with, and adhere to the Child Protection Policy. This includes inducting new staff.
    Ensure quality implementation of all projects as laid out in RBM log frame and/or as per donor agreement.
    Acting as a first point of contact for Kesho-Kenya on issues of Child Protection, both internally and externally.
    Keeping an up-to-date knowledge and understanding of the area of child protection and family support, including attending appropriate training.
    Ensuring all relevant information around Child Protection is communicated to the Core Team.
    Make frequent field visits to areas of operations to monitor implementation of activities, identify opportunities and constraints and any adjustments needed including additional staffing or staff training.
    Hold planning and progress review meetings with relevant staff and partners.
    Optimise all relevant administrative systems and update them in response to organizational growth and need.
    Support in the development of proposals specific to the CP & FS programme.
    Qualifications & Experience
    Graduate degree in social work/social sciences
    A degree in law will be an added advantage
    Professional experience working with National/international/NGO and experience in 
child rights and women empowerment.
    Knowledge of community based child protection approaches and Alternative Care 
Processes preferably including experience in participatory approaches (PRA/PLA) 
and child participation methodologies.
    Comprehensive knowledge of case management and Best Interest Assessment 
processes for children at risk is a plus.
    Knowledge of civil society networks in Kenya that focus on child rights issues – and experience of working with these networks on programming and/or advocacy for children preferred.
    Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills including influencing, negotiation and coaching
    Skills and experience in report writing, M&E and budget monitoring are essential.
    Highly developed cultural awareness and ability to work well in an environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
    Familiarity with programming in the local cultural context, local government and local languages is a distinct advantage.
    Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, definition of a clear way forward and ensuring buy in.

  • TAYARI Project Child Health Technical Assistant

    TAYARI Project Child Health Technical Assistant

    The Tayari programme seeks to develop a cost-effective and scalable ECDE model that ensure pre-primary children (3-6 years) are mentally, physically, socially and emotionally ready to start, and succeed, in primary school.
    The Child Health Technical Assistant will report to the Regional Education Programme Officer (REPO) and work closely with other staff in the regional office to facilitate effective implementation of the health component of the Tayari Programme.
    In consultation with the REPO, he/she will liaise with the Ministry of Health at the County level and work closely with Community Health Assistants (CHAs) in providing technical support to Community Health Volunteers, teachers and school community on the child health component activities of the Tayari programme.
    She/he will participate in relevant technical meetings both at the County and Sub-County level. In addition, she/he will carry out monitoring of the hygiene promotion activities, child health data capture and referral of learners who are sick through regular visits to ECDE centers in collaboration with MoE and MoH.
    She /he will provide supervisory support, mentorship and on-the-job capacity building to ECDE teachers, CHVs and CHAs. The Health Technical Assistant will prepare monthly/quarterly/annual progress reports and submit to RTI for sharing with the management of ministries and other relevant stakeholders.
    Required qualifications and experience
    Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Community Health or a related field.
    Three to Five years of experience implementing and monitoring child health and nutrition programs, including facilitating community-based training in Kenya.
    She/he needs to have a good understanding of the MoH Community Health Strategy, other complementary community based activities and child health and nutrition services at community level.
    Understanding of MoH health reporting systems at community and health facility level.
    She /he needs to have sound technical knowledge of global and national school health policies, guidelines, strategies and best practices including Water, Sanitation and hygiene.
    Previous experience in school health programmes in an early childhood development context is an added advantage.
    Experience in development of training materials and capacity building of government or civil society organizations on child health and nutrition issues is an added advantage.

    Purpose of the Position
    Under the general guidance of the Regional Emergency Advisor, provide support to UNICEF Country Offices (CO) engaged in humanitarian action encompassing preparedness, response and post-crisis recovery.  The Emergency Specialist will work as part of the Humanitarian Action Resilience and Peace Building (HARP) Section as well as with sectoral emergency focal points within the Regional Office (RO), inter-agency partners and Country Office staff.

    Summary of Primary Duties:
    The County MUS/Household ProductionSpecialist will support and advise on the expansion of WASH MUS technologies in the assigned target county. He/she will work closely with the respective KIWASH MUS/Household Production Regional Manager and integrate KIWASH MUS activities with other USAID projects to promote expanded use of MUS systems. The Specialist, will be based in one of the above listed counties and will work with county government staff/partners in supporting MUS/Household Production activities in the target county. 
    Reporting
    The County Embedded MUS/Household Production Specialist will report to the Regional MUS Household Production Manager, and in his/her absence, the KIWASH Agriculture and Nutrition Advisor.
     
    Key Responsibilities 
    Essential Duties
    Provide technical assistance to County staff in identification and use of MUS systems and technologies;
    Identify county-specific investment opportunities to promote MUS that have the potential to provide household and economic benefits;
    Advocate for, and provide, technical support to county government in the development and review of county agriculture /irrigation strategies/plans, while identifying areas of synergy with KIWASH plans;
    Collaborate with county agriculture staff to promote household production through MUS such as:
    promoting micro-entrepreneur opportunities, e.g. engaging in the supply, operation, and maintenance of MUS WASH and irrigation technology services;
    Advocate for access to water for agricultural productivity at the household level through use of innovative technologies, while improving access for MUS at the community level;
    Work together with county Agriculture/Irrigation staff and stakeholders to support identified appropriate irrigation technologies and suppliers for improvement of the supply chain for MUS;
    Together with the County Nutrition and WASH Specialist and the Feed the Future (FTF) partners in the county, work with the Agriculture extension workers to:
    Identify farmer groups (including Women and Youth groups) as beneficiaries for integration of WASH actions;
    Promote integration of essential WASH/Nutrition actions through promotion of productive use of water to produce nutritious foods for consumption at households level;
    Together with county staff, prepare plans to integrate KIWASH MUS activities with others (including USAID FTF implementers, Community Savings Groups, Water Users Associations and other groups) with kitchen garden and agriculture activities;
    Coordinate with FTF partners to identify:
    Gaps that farmers/households have in gaining access to MUS water systems;
    Roll out agricultural training and extension in locations without FTF support.
    Support county staff and partners to integrate the use of low-cost, high-impact WASH interventions within MUS. These include:
    optimal hand washing with soap at appropriate times, treatment and safe storage of household drinking water, and adequate sanitation/ feces management that prevent diarrhea and under-nutrition.
    Support community and facility-level demonstration and uptake of MUS;
    Identify activities to empower youth as sales/extension agents for input dealers to reach women and youth;
    Coordinate with county-based Water/Sanitation Infrastructure Specialists on the design and construction of MUS systems;
    Other tasks as required by the MUS/Household Production Regional Manager and Agriculture and Nutrition Advisor.
    Supervisory Responsibilities
    None. 
    Candidate Profile
    An advanced graduate degree in a related field of study preferred, e.g. agricultural engineering, water resources management, Irrigation engineering, etc.;
    A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in Agriculture with a specialization in agricultural extension work; and preferably small scale irrigation infrastructure and
    Experience and knowledge of working in the Kenyan agricultural sector;
    Field-based experience at the farmer level and working with farmer groups and NGO’s/ Associations;
    Knowledge of Kenyan environmental and agriculture legislation and issues preferred;
    Familiarity with Government of Kenya structures and reporting systems desirable;
    English language written and verbal fluency essential.

    Areas of Responsibility
    Under direct supervision of the Field Officer – Health and Social Services, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
    Coordinate planning and reporting among community volunteers
    Support in profiling and enrolment of households into the project
    Maintain a database of project beneficiaries
    Supervise and oversee household visits
    Coordinate follow ups to ensure effective referrals
    Documenting project data, monitoring, compiling and submitting timely reports
    Mentor volunteers and conduct review sessions
    Perform project budget tracking
    Participate and represent the project in the relevant technical working groups and committees
    Support in identifying potential areas of growth for program development
    Establish and maintain effective working relationship with communities and local partners
    Make follow-up activities with Community Mentor Mothers (CMM) and Community Health Volunteers to ensure OVCs and care givers access comprehensive services
    Minimum Requirements
    Diploma in Social/Behavioral Sciences, Community Development or related field from an accredited institution.
    At least 2 years’ experience in OVC, particularly in the area of child protection, education and health
    Excellent command of English and Swahili languages (written and oral)
    Strong analytical, strategic thinking and writing skills
    Ability to work independently and in a team
    Strong IT skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, with practical experience in the use of electronic communications including email, internet, etc)
    Ability to work and deliver results under minimum supervision.
    Experience in economic strengthening will be an added advantage
