    JOB DIMENSION

    Key Responsibilities

    Planning and implementing community, public and stakeholder engagement activities for UZIMA-DS research project within Kilifi County.
    Maintain close contact and communication with diverse community representation structures for UZIMA-DS such as the KEMRI Kilifi Representatives (KCRs) at the different research stages i.e., inception, project implementation (e.g., progress update), and dissemination of study findings.
    Document, notify the DSC leads and respond to concerns/issues/opinions coming from the community and/or stakeholder groups engaged with the research project.
    Conduct continuous mapping and identification of potential engagement stakeholders that can be engaged by UZIMA-DS.
    Ensure appropriate implementation and documentation of all assigned engagement activities, including developing and sharing of activity summary reports.
    Contribute to data collection and analysis of data emerging from community and stakeholder engagement activities.
    Contribute to the dissemination of research findings, including through the preparation of scientific reports/manuscripts for publication and giving presentations at scientific meetings, e.g., local and international conferences.
    Working closely with the UZIMA-DS and KWTRP Communications teams to showcase UZIMA-DS public engagement activities.
    Supporting in training and capacity building activities for the study field team and research interns/students in the implementation of their roles and responsibilities.
    Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.

    JOB SPECIFICATIONS

    A bachelor’s degree (BSc/BA) in Social Science, Public Health, Community Development, or related field.
    At least 2 years’ relevant experience working in a research environment (academic or research institution)

    DESIRABLE

    Experience/keen interest in research engagement and communication.
    Experience working with a multi-disciplinary research team and in a multi-cultural research environment.
    Experience in quantitative and qualitative research methods, in particular: data collection, organisation, and analysis using supporting software such as N-Vivo.

    Training in quality management systems, quality assurance programs or equivalent

    Duties/Responsibilities

    Conduct research on food systems which may include community-based, school based or desk-based research including applied research.     Job Summary
    We are seeking to hire four (4) Research Assistants who will be community and facility based. They will be based at public health facilities in Kaloleni and Rabai sub counties in Kilifi County. The role may include some local travel between sites and to the community. The role also requires shift work including nights, weekends and public holidays.
    This position is required to contribute to participant recruitment tracing and follow-up, data collection for research studies of the African Research Leader fellowship project as well as related studies led by the same team.
    The successful candidates will be required to screen and recruit participants at health facilities, administer informed consent and collect data for the study. They will also contribute to the follow-up of study participants in the community and when they return for study visits and health facility visits. Roles also include some complex data collection approaches such as special assessments for children, referral of participants and offering initial emotional support to participants.
    They will also be required to comply with stipulated guidelines related to informed consent, data collection and data handling. They will be required to be sensitive and considerate throughout the encounter with participants, their families, health facility staff, community health teams and peer mothers.
     He / She will be the face of the study to the community and will be required to communicate to families, health facility staff, community health teams and peer mothers as appropriate and at all times to display a professional attitude.
    Responsibilities

    Liaise with health facility staff to identify potentially eligible study participants for recruitment into specific studies and sub-studies;
    Screen participants for eligibility;
    Provide eligible participants with information about the study and administer Informed consent;
    Data collection – both qualitative and quantitative data;
    Conduct simple clinical measurements for the study;
    Support health facility staff in obtaining and recording other data relevant for the study;
    For participants, conduct home follow-up visits to collect relevant data for the study;
    Perform child neuro assessments and other structured assessments and collect the resultant data;
    Provide initial emotional and psychological support for study participants during and after special data collection sessions e.g. Health economics data collection and verbal autopsies;

    Regularly clean data based on the query reports shared by the data management team;
    Support the development of study documentation such as checklists and tracking forms
    Support translation of study documents
    Create daily and monthly summary reports for activities as guided by the Study Coordinator.
    Attend training sessions and obtain relevant competency in data collection and informed consent and other skills essential for delivery of his/her role; and

     Requirements

    Global Mental Health Postdoctoral Fellowship

    Introduction

    The goal of this Fellowship Program is to strengthen capacity for global mental health implementation science in South and Central Asia and/or East Africa. The Fellowship Program is a joint initiative of the Aga Khan University’s Brain and Mind Institute and the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School. The Program supports post-doctoral research fellows in conducting implementation science research designed to translate prevention, assessment, and treatment interventions to specific settings and vulnerable populations in low- and middle- income countries.

    Responsibilities
    Year 1: Harvard Medical School

    A year-long Fellowship at the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School is a foundational activity for this program. During this year, the Post-Doctoral Fellows will work closely with a nominated Harvard faculty member to draft an implementation science research proposal, secure IRB permission, acquire the research skills for its conduct, and prepare for its implementation in Year 2.
    The Post-Doctoral Fellows will get to draft an Individual Development Plan (IDP) following guidance from the NIH and Harvard Medical School Office for Postdoctoral Fellows (see for example Tools & Resources | HMS/HSDM Office for Postdoctoral Fellows (harvard.edu) . The IDPs will be developed and finalized by the Fellow during the first two months of the fellowship collaboratively with Harvard and AKU faculty mentors. The IDP will also identify a research committee including other AKU or Harvard collaborating faculty members to provide additional methods or content expertise for the Fellow’s research project.
    The Fellows will have access to the Harvard research and training environment, including courses, seminar series and conferences including presenting research proposals at symposiums, as well as becoming a member of other networks of thematic interest, for example, the early child development or implementation science groups coordinated by the Department.

    Year 2: Aga Khan University

    During this year, the Fellow will implement the project which was developed in a context associated with the home AKU campus in East Africa/South and Central Asia. The Fellows will retain visiting appointments in Harvard with full access to all academic and networking opportunities. The Harvard mentors will continue to offer supervision and guidance, in collaboration with the AKU mentor, with two key goals: the successful completion of the study leading to at least one peer-reviewed publication; and the planning for at least one grant application for a new research project.

    Faculty Mentorship

    The Fellows will have regular (at least monthly) research and progress assessment meetings with their Harvard faculty mentor for the full two years of the fellowship. Each Fellow will also have an AKU mentor, identified by the AKU program leadership, thus paving the way for a collaborative relationship between senior faculty in both Universities.

    Requirements

    The Fellowship Program is open to individuals who have received their PhD or completed their MD with a research thesis degree by December 01, 2023;
    Additionally, applicants should have a record of academic achievement (For example, prior peer-reviewed publications), and have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing a career in global mental health research, particularly in service to the geographies served by Aga Khan University and the Aga Khan Development Network. The Fellowship Program is open to any qualified candidate;
    Commitment to the fields of global mental health and implementation science;
    Commitment to the special needs of low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), especially those served by Aga Khan University (AKU) and the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN);
