    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Safaricom is looking for potential young talent to join our team though the annual internship program for the year 2024/25 in the Commercial, Business Development & Technology Functions.

    About The Internship Program

    The program will be categorized into two,

    3 months Industrial attachment for ongoing students. 
    6 months Internship for students who have completed school & awaiting graduation or having graduated within the last 12 months. The 6 months program will have 2 intakes – April & October 2024. 

    Call for applications will only happen once in the financial year allowing you to plan which intake you are available for. 

    The Program gives you the opportunity to gain first-hand experience working on real-world problems, hone your skills, create lasting relationships, gain insights, and discover your strengths. Throughout the program, you’ll acquire the skills for immediate success, as well as understand what’s required for the future as our industry and your career evolve. 

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Eligibility Criteria

    We are looking for University students or recent graduates who meet the criteria indicated below:

    You must be in your final or second last year of your degree program or having graduated with the last 12 months in an accredited institution of higher learning.
    You must be on break from school during the internship period for any of the intakes within the year. For ongoing students, priority will be given to students with industrial attachment as a requirement to completion of the degree program. 
    Must be available for the full period of the internship program (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm)
    You can only select 1 intake in the year for which you will be available for the internship.
    The internship is for a fixed period of 3 or 6 months without extension.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    The internship is located in the Indian Ocean West Team of the Global Maritime Crime Programme based in Nairobi, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC),
    The intern will work under the direct supervision of Professional staff of the Global Maritime Crime Programme.
    The internship is for three (3) months (with the possibility of an extension up to a maximum of 6 months subject to the needs of the office and availability of the intern) with a desired starting date in March 2024. The position is UNPAID and full-time, i.e. five days (34 hours) per week under the supervision of a staff member in the receiving department or office.
    The Indian Ocean West (IOW) team of the Global Maritime Crime Program has extensive experience and knowledge in supporting States in the region in the fight against maritime crime and is present in the following countries in the East Africa region: Angola, Comoros , Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Namibia, Pakistan, Seychelles and Tanzania.     Qualifications/special skills

    To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: 

    be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); 
    be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent)
    have graduated with a university degree (as defined above)(OFFICIAL PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY IN SUPPORT OF ONE OF THE ABOVE OPTIONS HAS TO BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION) 

    The intern should also:  –

    Be computer literate in standard software applications.
    A Knowledge of graphic design software and the facilitation of online meetings is desirable.  
    Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and  
    Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
    Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience
     However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
    Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.

    Languages

    Job Purpose

    Supporting the regional Humanitarian Diplomacy and Communications teams to ensure a strategic, coordinated, consultative approach to the Africa Regional office engagement around Humanitarian diplomacy and support national societies, country cluster delegations and other regional units as well as external engagement and key partners.

    Job Duties and Responsibilities

    The HD Intern will support the Regional HD unit and will:

    Support the follow up and track the implementation of the Regional and global commitments by IFRC and its National Societies at various forums.
    Support the engagement of National Societies, key experts, and partners to ensure they are well informed of relevant developments and can share their inputs to key strategic deliverables.
    Write information briefings, updates, newsletters, etc.
    Follow key regional meetings, summarize, and share key takeaways and action points.
    Undertake desktop research as needed.
    Support with fact -checking and editing of documents.
    Support in consolidating and presenting relevant data.
    Support events organizing
    Support the dissemination of information about the Pan African initiatives, including updating the Grand Bargain Localization Workstream’s online platform and preparing updates for Workstream members, the African National Societies, and other audiences.
    Monitor news and identify any issues that affect the organization’s reputation.
    The intern will also support other needs of the HD Unit as needed.

    Actively work towards the achievement of the Federation Secretariat’s Agenda for Renewal in implementing Strategy 2030.
    Abide by and work in accordance with the Red Cross and Red Crescent principles.
    Perform any other work-related duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the line manager.

    Education

    Enrolment in, or completion of an advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in international development, law, political science, humanitarian action, climate policy, or related field. Required.

    Experience

    Work or volunteer experience in the international humanitarian sector, external relations, and/or climate or DRR policy research. Required.
    Proven good judgment and ability to work with complete integrity and confidentiality. Required.
    Ability to work within a multi-cultural, multilingual, multidisciplinary environment. Preferred.

    Knowledge, Skills and Languages

    Knowledge about the humanitarian sector, disaster management. Required.
    Strong research and writing skills. Required.
    Knowledge of climate policy and/or climate adaptation programming. Preferred.
    Fluent spoken and written English. Required.
    Good command of another IFRC official language (French, Spanish or Arabic). Preferred.
