    Overall Purpose
    This role will support climate science and related social science research and project implementation in the International Centre for Humanitarian Affairs (ICHA), an establishment of the Kenya Red Cross Society.
    Duties and Responsibilities

    Provide technical support on climate science for implementation of various ongoing/ upcoming projects related to forecast based early warning early action, climate services and climate science research.
    Support engagement with key institutions and actors at both national and county level.
    Support project documentation, reporting and development of publications.
    Provide administrative support such as organizing meetings, stakeholder communication and follow up.
    Collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team working on research related to climate science, climate change and disaster risk management/reduction.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Master’s Degree in climate science, meteorology or climate change.
    Relevant practical experience in working on research and research projects.

    Desired Competencies

    Interest in inter-disciplinary work and profound interest in understanding use of climate science for risk reduction and management. 
    Good ability to organise small workshops and conduct interviews and focus groups.
    Excellent English writing skills with ability to author reports, policy briefs and working / academic papers.
    A strong and reliable communicator able to coordinate and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
    Ability to work independently and under the supervision of Project Manager – Climate Research.
    Willingness to travel.
    Experience in working on disaster risk reduction projects, wider climate change and sustainability will be an added advantage.

    NEMA with support of GIZ a German Government Project, will be undertaking a one-year project in 2020 on monitoring of Ozone Depleting Substances in Kenya. The Authority seeks to recruit an intern during the project period to support this assignment.
    Duties and Responsibilities
    The Intern will work under the guidance of NEMA officers, in consultation with the National Ozone Unit (NOU) and GIZ.  Duties and responsibilities will include but not limited to;

    Following up on the licenses and permits issued by NEMA for 2019 to the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) industry
    Assisting NEMA in collating and corroborating physically on the import quantities of refrigerants through meeting with importing companies, NEMA officers at the borders and Customs Officers of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA)
    Drafting comprehensive report on the verified imported quantities  
    Monitoring and reporting on the import licenses and permits issued by NEMA for 2020 to the industry
    Assisting NEMA and the NOU to gain an accurate and detailed picture of the import of ODS in the country
    Reporting on a regular to the NOU and GIZ
    Any other duty that may be assigned from time to time.

    Requirements for Appointment
    For appointment to this position a candidate must have;

    Graduated with a university degree in Environmental Chemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Biochemistry or any other related field from a recognised Institution, within the last five (5) years;
    Good interpersonal skills required to interact successfully with various stakeholders ranging from industry to government;
    Good communication skills both written and spoken;
    Proficiency in using Word, Excel and Power point;
    A valid certificate of good conduct from Directorate of criminal investigations (DCI).

    Major Functions

    The purpose of this position is to support the implementation of a three year project “Mobilizing Development Finance for Adaptation”.   Climate Finance is increasingly becoming a key area of focus for most African governments. The African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS) has been at the Centre of implementing a number of climate finance research and capacity building projects.  The three-year (2019-2021) “Mobilizing Development Finance for Strategic and Scaled-up Investment in Climate Adaptation” research project is implemented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in partnership with ACTS in Kenya, Prakriti Research Centre in Nepal, and Libélula Instituto para el Cambio Global in Peru. The project is supported by Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC). A Project Advisory Committee – comprised of representatives from the African Development Bank; Asian Development Bank; Inter-American Development Bank; World Bank; Governments of Kenya, Nepal and Peru; IDRC and Institute for Climate Economics – provides strategic advice on the research directions and outputs.
    The project explores common challenges to scaling up adaptation finance across different contexts, leading to the identification of new opportunities and insights. It examines processes in Multilateral Development Banks and select developing countries to identify barriers that limit the use of development financing to address national adaptation priorities and opportunities to overcome these constraints.
    We are seeking highly qualified candidates for position of intern – climate finance to support the implementation of the project and other relevant initiatives. The position provides commensurate remuneration and a career growth opportunity in the area of research and development.
     Main Responsibilities

    Support the review of in-country data on the country-level MDB climate and investment portfolios
    Support the review and analysis of the processes through which developing countries engage with the multi-national Development Banks (MDBs)
    Support the development and drafting key recommendations on how developing countries could effectively engage with MDBs in supporting adaptation plans.
    Support potential role of MDBs in addressing priority adaptation actions emerging from country-driven strategies, and how developing countries engage with MDBs,

    Project Overview and Role
    BACKGROUND

    The Feed the Future Kenya Investment Mechanism (KIM) Program is a five-year project (2018 – 2023) that is one of USAID’s “Market Systems Suite” projects that aims to increase agricultural production and reduce poverty and malnutrition in Kenya. The overall purpose of the KIM program is to create a sustainable, market-based ecosystem for finance and investment through mobilizing capital into the horticulture, dairy, livestock, and clean energy value chains (VCs), and facilitating an enabling environment conducive to investment. The focus is on strengthening Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) working in the following value chains: dairy, livestock, and horticulture (mango, passion fruit, avocado, banana, pineapple, sweet potato, and African leafy vegetables).

    The KIM program will mobilize private capital into target VCs through innovative smart incentives and building partnerships with key actors that can deliver access to market, know-how, and technology to drive VC competitiveness. Concurrently, KIM will lead policy reform efforts focused on removing barriers inhibiting large-scale investment into the target sectors, therefore unlocking further finance. The two objectives of KIM will result in the project serving as an investment platform that mobilizes substantial capital from the public and private sectors and builds partnerships between stakeholders in the financial ecosystem, ultimately contributing to USAID’s overall goal of fostering broad-based, sustained, and inclusive economic growth in Kenya.

    The KIM project will focus on businesses located in, or doing business in, the following target counties: Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Vihiga, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Isiolo, Marsabit, Turkana, Garissa and Wajir counties.

    OBJECTIVES

    The KIM internship program offers recent graduates practical experience in business working environment and provide opportunity to build careers in financial sector. These positions are available in the KIM’s office based in Nairobi and is open to Kenyan Citizens below the age of 35 years and seeking to fulfill the experience requirement for respective job needs.
