    Scope of the internship:

    Working as a member of the Burundi Programme, under the supervision of the unit’s Programme Manger, the intern will provide support support to the Burundi peacebuilding programme, and also bridge the information needs of the Burundi partner organisations in the field and office in Nairobi.

    A skilled supervisor will guide and mentor the intern during the internship. This includes:

    Discussing and setting the development objectives for the internship period with the intern
    Providing the resources and support required to meet the requirements and development objectives of the internship
    Providing mentorship and regular feedback on performance
    Issuing an internship certificate

    Specific duties:

    Based in Nairobi, the intern’s emphasis will be on supporting the team on a programmatic, timely reporting and operational level. Specific responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

    Assist the Interpeace Burundi programme manager in the implementation of the Burundi peacebuilding programme including the BIC-Interpeace programme, CENAP-Interpeace programme and any other new programme being undertaken.
    Support Interpeace’s key functions regarding preparation of donor reports preparation by the implementing partners from the field.
    Provide communication and logistical link support for the Burundi peacebuilding programme from the Interpeace Nairobi office for activities on going at the field level.
    Support in the compilation and review of written products, including publications, research and donor reports as well as other communication outputs of the regional programme, in collaboration with the programme officer.
    Drafting of weekly context notes based on the partner team inputs and open source information on context developments.
    Operational support for events, workshops and field activities by Interpeace and its regional programme partner organizations.
    Support the development of emerging thematic programme and process including through the provision of academic inputs and identification of relevant research resources relating to regional programme content.
    Support in sharing Burundi peacebuilding programme content with stakeholders and funding partners, including the dissemination of partners’ reports and films
    Ad-hoc organizational tasks within the office including helping to develop organizational systems, such as databases or other.
    Any other tasks as may be assigned.

    Skills that the intern will develop and knowledge that the intern will acquire:

    An understanding of different stages of programme development (scoping, country analysis, stakeholder engagement, proposal development etc.)
    An understanding of peacebuilding dynamics in several conflict and post-conflict contexts
    Open source research skills to provide sound analysis of conflict dynamics
    Drafting written communication (briefs, letters, e-mails, etc.)
    Drafting documents for internal and external audiences
    Planning and coordination of events

    Duration:

    The duration of the internship is 6 months and is full-time.

    Stipend

    A stipend is offered throughout the internship period.

    Current pursuit of a Masters in Political Science, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Development Studies, or related field and able to dedicate six months to a full-time internship with the university’s/education institution’s agreement or
    Completion of a Masters in Political Science, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Development Studies, or related field and pursuing a Master’s degree in the near future. Applicants will need to provide an attestation from the education institution where the candidate seeks to pursue the graduate degree attesting that this internship is aligned and will contribute to the educational purpose of the graduate degree or
    Recent completion of a Master’s degree in Political Science, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Development Studies, or related field.
    A strong desire to learn about peacebuilding while making a worthwhile contribution of time and effort to Interpeace
    Fluent written and spoken French and English;
    Good knowledge of common MS computer applications
    Ability to work under pressure and multi-task
    Excellent proven organization and communications skills

    The Internship

    Unemployment in Kenya is marked by inequality and discrimination as Kenya’s youth unemployment is higher than national unemployment average. Access to gainful employment and income opportunities for young people in Kenya is hindered by lack of capital, information, and relevant skills, among Kenyans, most of who are youthful population. With the Kenyan youth facing their normal fair share of life challenges related to their age, a proper response to youth challenges needs the involvement of young people themselves in decision-making and political leadership.
    Currently, there is a gap within the committee since there is no technical person dedicated to ensuring matters relating to the Youth sector are implemented. The Council is keen on ensuring that Youth issues are mainstreamed in all the operations of the Council as well as those of County Governments. As such, it is imperative that a Youth intern is brought on board to advance the Youth agenda both within the Council of Governors and in County Governments.

    Job Description for the Youth Intern

    Support in the collection of information and data on the performance of County Governments in the Youth sector;
    Assist in the facilitation and monitoring of youth mainstreaming activities in the Council of Governors’ committees;
    Support in the creation of sensitization/awareness on youth programmes / projects by the County Governments;
    Support in the development of training and promotional materials in conjunction with the Gender and Education team on youth approaches;
    Continuously update and maintain an accurate data base for all the County Executive Committee Members, County Chief Officers and County Directors in charge of Youth;
    Assist in ensuring youth and youth with disabilities integration in the day-to-day activities at the Council of Governors;
    Support in the convening, coordination and minute writing during Committee meetings;
    Ensuring that all reports are written and submitted within required timelines and quality;
    Support intra and inter-agency and governmental consultations on Youth and related issues;
    Undertake research work on contemporary issues, analysis of documents and preparation of position papers, policy briefs, and success stories in the Youth sector;
    Maintain up to date records of all the decisions, agreements, reports and other documents concerning the Committee;
    Support in the analysis and review of policy and legislative frameworks in the Youth sector of concern to County Governments;
    Support the implementation of the day to day activities and programmes under the Gender, Youth, Sports, Children, Culture and Social Services Committee;

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    Degree in Communication, Social Sciences, Gender Studies or other related degree.
    Experience in documentation and report production for high‐level and/or technical meetings.
    Highly motivated and dynamic personality with a good degree of autonomy, eager to take initiative and capable to perform in team work.
    Full computer literacy in Microsoft Office Package suite and in the use of web browser capability.
    Knowledge and understanding of government related processes and terminologies.
    Knowledge of youth mainstreaming work in Kenya especially in policy formulation, legislation.
    Strong interpersonal skills – including but not limited to – the ability to work under pressure with restrictive timelines and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people.
    A good understanding of devolution.
     Good knowledge of Gender, Disability and Youth issues.
    Excellent spoken and written English skills.
    Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation).
    Ability to communicate effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, gender, national and cultural backgrounds.

    Supervision

    The Youth Intern will be working within the Council of Governors committee on Education, Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture and Social Services Committee, supervised by and reporting to the committees’ sector lead.

    Duration of service

    The contract duration is six (6) months with possible extension for another six months owing to performance of the intern and availability of funds. All the statutory deductions applicable to consultants shall apply.

    Programme Support
