    Intern – Drug Control & Crime Prevention, I [Temporary]

    These internship positions are offered for an initial period of three months with various reporting dates, starting from November 23, with an opportunity for extension to a maximum of six months, subject to the needs of the department and the availability of the interns.
    The internship is UNPAID and full time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

    Responsibilities
    The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

    Conduct research on criminal justice aspects of terrorism prevention and on specific counter-terrorism related thematic areas;
    Contribute to the elaboration of background documents, presentations, briefing notes, summaries, talking points and speeches;
    Assist in the preparation of national and regional technical assistance workshops, meetings, high-level events and conferences;
    Attend and take notes at meetings, as required; and
    Perform other tasks, as necessary.

    Education
    To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met:

    Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent) (preferably in the area of Law or equivalent). (OFFICIAL WRITTEN PROOF FROM THE UNIVERSITY SUPPORTING ONE OF THE ABOVE POSSIBILITIES MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE INSPIRA APPLICATION);
    Be computer literate in standard software applications;
    Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
    Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

    Work Experience

    No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required; and knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

    The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) seeks an intern to join a dynamic team working on conflict prevention and governance in East Africa and the Great Lakes region. The intern will support research, writing, planning and communication tasks, and will report to a senior researcher. The position is based in Nairobi.

    Overview of duties

    Monitor media articles to develop reports on conflict dynamics and socio-political developments in East Africa and the Great Lakes region
    Support primary and secondary research and analysis
    Support dissemination of research results and policy recommendations through written products and participation in events
    Contribute to identifying target stakeholders, peer groups, donors and beneficiaries
    Assist with monitoring and evaluation
    Assist the team with administration and logistics

    Overview of requirements

    An undergraduate degree in peace and security studies, political science, international relations, law, sociology, criminology or a related field
    Excellent command of written and spoken English is required. A good knowledge of Lingala or Kiswahili will be an advantage
    Research, writing and analytical abilities
    Ability to work methodically and meet deadlines
    Independent, creative and proactive

    JOB PURPOSE
    The security unit is looking for an intern to support critical unit functions, here in Nairobi. It is a great opportunity to see how the security unit works and get exposure to both field missions ‘life’ as well as the office-based workplan in Nairobi.
    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)
    The intern, reporting to the Security Officer, is expected to:

    Assist in compiling factual information, to facilitate reporting and decision-making process.
    Assist in planning and preparation of field missions.
    Assist in preparation of security assessment reports after field missions.
    Support compiling routine security reports and ensure relevant databases are accurately updated at all times.
    Assist in the inventory control and maintenance of security equipment, to ensure its
    appropriate functioning at all times.
    Support in the emergency and contingency planning documentation.

    STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in Security Management, International Relations or Law Enforcement or other relevant field.
    Currently enrolled in a master’s degree programme and have attended classes in the past 12 months, or a recent graduate from a bachelor or graduate programme (within six months prior to the application to the internship programme) ; or
    Graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a Bachelor’s/master’s degree or equivalent studies.
    Language:  Fluency in both oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

    Fraud Control Internships Responsibilities
    To handle and review potential fraud bookings in order to avoid chargebacks (manual fraud review, gather information through research and customer calls)
    To analyze completed transactions to determine if fraudulent activity is present (transactions in 40+ countries)
    Report fraud trends to supervisors, review and analysis of chargebacks received to improve process
    Communicate and involve all relevant internal and external stakeholders to respond to incident cases:
    Coordination with Customer Service teams to update status of booking, coordination with Finance team to update status of payment
    Direct link with Customer service teams to discuss how to inform customers about services available and accessing customer needs
    Communicates appropriate options for resolution in a timely manner.
    Limit potential loss exposure by placing holds in order to block future fraudulent transactions
    Maintains or exceeds established service level agreements and guidelines for timely resolution of queued transactions to minimize potential revenue losses
    Performs special projects in a timely manner, as requested.
    Requirements for the Fraud Control Internships
    Undergraduate Degree/Diploma in relevant field
    At least past experience in a similar role
    Fluency in English is a MUST
    Fluency in French will be a plus
