    The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Ranch Manager to assist in day to day management and running of ILRI’s Kapiti Research Station

    Responsibilities
    Overall management duties:

    Day to day management of all livestock health and husbandry activities. Including

    Record keeping – development and maintenance of electronic database (breeding data, production data, sales records) Supervision of routine treatments and vaccinations
    Supervision of proper animal identification (notching, tattoos, branding, RFID tags)
    Conducting selection of breeding, culling and sale stock
    Supervision of routine husbandry practices
    Supplementary feeding
    Ensuring effective grazing management, rotational grazing, hay making

    Oversee the management and maintenance of assets (waterholes, boreholes, machinery and equipment, housing)
    Support scientist during implementation of experiments trials
    Work in close collaboration with Kapiti head of security on all security related issues.

    Administrative duties:

    Finance: Assist in budget preparation and ensure financial resources are properly utilised through effective monitoring.
    Management of personnel issues including; recruitment, orientation and training of new personnel, allocation of tasks and responsibilities, preparation of appraisal and remuneration.

    Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry or related field
    Minimum of 10 years’ experience of progressive hands on management expertise
    Ability to use independent judgement in management of the ranch operations
    Ability to supervise and including organising, prioritizing and scheduling work
    Ability to supervise maintenance works of all assets
    Ability to develop and maintain record keeping system and procedures
    Ability to develop, plan and implement short and long term goals
    Knowledge of breeding, identification systems, management and sale of livestock essential
    Ability to perform artificial Insemination is desirable

    Terms of Appointment
    This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at Kapiti Research Station in Machakos. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

    Reporting to Global Head of Smallholder Farming, the Smallholder Farming Manager- Africa will develop, implement and follow-up dedicated business models in the smallholder segment in defined countries and crops in alignment with the global smallholder farming strategy. The major goals are: to improve livelihood of farmers and to ensure sustainable and scalable value creation in the segment. The position is based in Nairobi and major focus will be on Africa Countries.
    Major Tasks and responsibilities

    Characterize the smallholder relevant markets for each country and crop in scope, comprising competitive analyses, agriculture gap analyses and farmers’ needs, portfolio and regulatory assessment, digital assessment, identify the key partners along the value chain and define appropriate business models
    Define the appropriate project platform structure, including value chain partners wherever appropriate, including implementation and scale-up plans, governance and monitoring schemes and digital solutions. For this, the engagement and training of the country smallholder farming manager has to be seen as an additional responsibility at the beginning of each initiated crop/country platform. I Supervise implementation of the Smallholder Farming initiatives in several countries, in close cooperation with the respective country Smallholder Farming managers and take the lead in preparing the implementation of future projects in additional countries and crops
    Contribute to the overall Smallholder farming strategy and community management and represent Bayer, in particular Smallholder Farming, in relevant meetings, trainings and regular partner and stakeholder management activities.
    Analyze and monitor the overall trends in smallholder farming, including the use of digital solutions, and provide long-term planning assumptions, as well as revised financial plans for the respective country/crop platforms
    In liaison with the relevant departments, provide regular project presentations/reports to ensure both internal and external communications and visibility of the Smallholder Farming Initiative.

    Experience /Qualification

    A university degree, preferred MSc., MBA or PhD, in agricultural sciences, international relations, development or policy and or a minimum of 5 -10 years of related professional experience with previous experience in managing international projects, preferably in developing countries
    English language fluency spoken and written is a must.
    Experience with modern digital mobile applications is preferred.

    Main Purpose of the Job

    You will provide technical expertise and leadership for the characterization advancement, development and commercial growth of varieties.
    You will understand the grower needs & practices as well as market trend to secure knowledge transfer to the rest of organization .

    Key Responsibilities

    Build strong relationship and partnership with key customers, distributors and external stakeholders in order to seize opportunities and accelerate growth.
    For CES Africa, plan and manage with distributors & sales the pre-commercial trials, including promotional trials or platforms mainly for tomato, onion, bean, pepper, watermelon, cabbage….;
    Executes protocols (trials, growing and harvesting) without deviation to meet applicable stewardship and regulatory requirements .     Uses Monsanto-provided data collection and data analysis tools (e.g., FTS and Spotfire ) to create reports to drive variety advancement / drop recommendations and/or FABs on NVIs and market extensions.
    Continually identifies the FABS of new products and aligns them to market opportunities and market needs
    Provide to sales team all the support to promote and sell new varieties.
    Partner with sales and distributors through promotional trials, training participation to growers meeting and exhibition and claim inquiries to ensure resolution when needed
    Interact with other functions (Breeding, Product Management), possibly through participation to the local Crop Team
    Manage trials budget in alignment with cropXcountry strategy for CES Africa region.

    Job Description
    The role of the Pond Supervisor is to ensure the highest level of egg and fingerlings production throughout all hatchery operations in the company. The individual will also be responsible for trainings, particularly with the pond crew, focusing on pond maintenance and fish health. One of the most important responsibilities of the position is to ensure that the Hatchery Department produces sustainable numbers of healthy fingerlings to increase and maintain projections of Victory Farms production plans. The position reports directly to the Hatchery Manager.
    Responsibilities:

    Monitor each pond early morning and report to the hatchery manager in case of any abnormalities observed (water color, fish gasping, scratching, disease, balance swimming etc.)
    Calculate all doses for lime, fertilizer, alum for pond use.
    Taking stocks of all pond Inputs (Lime, Fertilizer etc.) and report to manager to request when stock is at 50%. Ensure that there is always adequate supply on site.
    Training of the Pond Team on good practices in aquaculture and designing new protocols to improve on work. More specifically, the Assistant Hatchery Manager will (a) identify training needs; (b) design training curricula; and(c) implement training programs – all in conjunction with the Hatchery Manager.
    Collect and Analyse environmental data (physicho-chemical parameters) on the ponds. Ability to use a computer is a big advantage.
    Responsible for pond preparation activities for fingerlings and egg production.
    Responsible for the safe keeping, regular calibration and maintenance of all environmental monitoring equipment.
    Conduct research studies and surveys of the aquatic environment and ponds, and produce reports recommending appropriate courses of action for solutions.
    Responsible for organization and implementation of the protocols relating to pond preparation and water quality maintenance.
    Support all aspects of hatchery operations. This includes incubation unit, pond management unit, and feeding unit.
    Maintain all environmental-related equipment.
    Lead data collection, analysis and interpretation for all environmental parameters in ponds.
