    We are looking for a qualified person to coordinate and lead the development of national and sub-national baseline studies on agricultural risk and climate-smart agriculture (CSA), also known as Agricultural Risk Profiles and CSA Profiles. These Profiles are developed in close collaboration with teams of experts, donors, national government partners, private sector and other in-country stakeholders. The position will also provide thought leadership on new directions for the profiles to evolve, particularly related to agricultural risk management, financial services for agriculture (e.g. credit and insurance), and climate finance. The position will be full-time and based in Nairobi, Kenya.
    Ensure on-going Agricultural Risk and CSA Profile projects are carried out successfully within the planned timeline and available resources.
    Coordinate teams of consultants, editors, and designers engaged in the elaboration of the Profiles, including managing and supervising activities related to project planning, stakeholder engagement, data collection, analysis, infographics elaboration and layout of final documents.

The position is based in Nairobi, Kenya. Regional travel will be necessary from time to time to visit IFDC projects in various countries in East and Southern Africa, including Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, and possibly DRC, Tanzania, Zambia, and Ethiopia. This is a full-time position with an initial probationary period.
    Duties
    Specific Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To

    Implementation and statistical analysis of fertilizer trials
    Evaluation of ongoing demonstrations and trials in various countries
    Reviewing literature and synthesis of essential of essential information from the same, and preparing drafts for publications
    Performing basic statistical analyses, and writing up results for publication
    Training of agronomists in various countries

    Required Skills

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Take the lead role as senior field agronomist for multiple crops in multiple geographic regions.
    Manage the productivity team of agronomists to ensure crop production in all our projects meets and exceeds company targets based on inputs from investor partners.
    Conducting feasibility studies for the implementation of agribusiness projects and Assessing the economic viability of the programmes
    Execute standard operating procedures in the crop production manual(s) for overall field crop care of specialty crop(s) in all growing regions.
    Work directly with field personnel to assist in the establishment and expansion of new crop acreage to meet seasonal production targets.
    Identify and recruit new field personnel and contract growers to diversify crops produced and production locations.

    Job purpose
    The farm manager is responsible for the daily planning, organization, supervision and administration of activities on the farm. He/she will also be responsible for organizing sales and purchase of livestock, farm equipment, crops and agricultural products and handling paperwork and keeping administrative records.
    Duties and responsibilities
    The duties of the farm manager shall include and is not limited to:

    Direct and coordinate worker activities such as planting, irrigation, chemical application, harvesting, grading, payroll and record keeping.
    Confers with purchasers and arranges for sale of crops.
    Records information, such as production, farm management practices, and parent stock, and prepares operational reports.
    Analyzes soil to determine type and quantity of fertilizer required for maximum production.
    Inspects equipment to ensure proper functioning.
    Inspects nursery and fields to determine maturity dates of crops or to estimate potential seedling damage from weather.
    Purchases machinery, equipment and supplies such as fertilizers and chemicals.
    Ensure that all the SOPs stipulated by the Head office are met
    Overall welfare of the plants in order to meet the 90% yield quota
    Assign duties, such as cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, pruning, packaging, grading, and equipment maintenance
    Management, training, and supervision of all farm staff.
    Observe workers to detect inefficient or unsafe work procedures or to identify problems and initiate corrective action as necessary
    Ensure that all the SOPs stipulated by the Head office are met
    Providing periodic operations reports to the management team, reporting on progress vs targets and production reports
    Requisition or purchase of supplies, such as insecticides, machine parts/lubricants, tools and implementation of stock control measures.
    Post-harvest processing including storage and packaging in preparation of sale
    Coordination with logistics and sales staff to ensure correct timing of harvest-ready produce

    Qualifications

    Degree in Agricultural Sciences/ Horticulture/
    Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in farm work, planting and seedling maintenance.
    A proven track record of meeting various targets set.
    Ability to work independently while constantly informing the head office in terms of reports, charts and memos.
    Demonstrated computer skills and proficiency in all MS office applications.
    Demonstrated ability to multitask, prioritize responsibilities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    Strong leadership capabilities with minimal supervision and ability to take initiative.

    Program Description: TechnoServe’s Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program is a partnership with Nespresso SA program is designed to introduce the Nespresso AAA program to Africa in Ethiopia, Kenya and South Sudan. The overarching goal is to reduce poverty of 200,000 smallholder coffee farmers in Kenya and Ethiopia through increased coffee incomes as a result of improved yields, quality and market access to Nespresso’s AAA supply chain. The Nespresso AAA Program will build on the natural synergies with the BMGF-funded Coffee Initiative in Kenya and Ethiopia.
    Position Description: The Agronomy Business Advisor shall support the implementation of strategies that will enable clients to achieve sustainable increases in coffee quality and yields.
    Key roles and responsibility

    Sensitize cooperative leadership, smallholder coffee farmers and local stakeholders on the TechnoServe coffee project work.
    Implement existing strategies to provide assigned cooperatives with agronomy training and with structured post-training farm visits to improve adoption.
    Train and advise farmers being assisted by the project on coffee agronomy best practices with the objective of helping them to improve coffee yields and quality.
    Train, mentor, coach and support assigned Farmer Trainers on all technical and operational aspects of their work and in relationship with farmers. This includes assisting them to set performance goals, continuous assessment of performance and giving feedback.
    Participate in the implementation of the defined project monitoring, measurement and evaluation activities that ensure accurate and consistent capture of date for project reporting and documenting of the impact of our work.
    Create linkages between cooperative leadership, farmers and suppliers of recommended inputs and other farm requirements.
    Collect, collate, validate and submit the specified project data and clients’ reports within stipulated time lines.
    Cultivate and manage good relationship with clients both at leadership and farmer levels as well as with key industry stakeholders and community leaders at local levels.
    Keep abreast of developments concerning coffee at the cooperative and in the local community and regularly report these.
    Understand, respect and promote TechnoServe’s values, vision, and strategy in the implementation of assigned duties.
    Any other relevant tasks as assigned by the Senior Business Advisor.

    Required skills and experience

    Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, agronomy, horticulture or related agricultural sciences.
    At least three years’ professional experience – ideally in the private sector – in one or more of the following areas: coffee processing or agronomy; business or cooperative management; SMEdevelopment; agriculture; training; extension services.
    Demonstrated good understanding of the Kenya coffee industry and especially the cooperatives sector.
    Possess an aptitude and skills for training adults in a field set up.
