    CIMMYT is seeking an innovative scientist, for the position of Maize Breeder – Easter Africa to work in the Global Maize Program.
     
    The position will be based in CIMMYT’s campus in Nairobi Kenya. The position may begin remotely from your home base or current location if organizational approval for the relocation to Kenya is delayed due to COVID 19.

    Specific duties:
    Effectively drive CIMMYT maize product delivery for the breeding pipelines in eastern Africa.
    Through strong collaboration with the teams involved in line development, molecular breeding, phenotyping, and seed systems, ensure generation of high-quality data, statistical analysis and summary of results for stage-gate advancement.
    Enhance operational efficiency by regular review of the regional on-station trial data.
    Convene the Eastern Africa Maize Product Advancement Meetings with active and efficient engagement of internal and external stakeholders
    Work in close collaboration with the regional breeding and GIS team to optimize and align trial locations with product pipeline testing requirements.
    Effectively fulfill agreed-upon QA/QC and seed quality targets for Stage 4 hand-off to the seed systems team in eastern Africa.
    Strongly contribute to the goal of increasing genetic gains in CIMMYT’s eastern Africa maize breeding pipelines, including formulation, testing and identification of impactful hybrids.
    Provide leadership to a team of research technicians and drive ownership and accountability amongst the team members.
    Contribute effectively to the regional collaborative maize breeding network, and capacity building of partner institutions in eastern Africa.
    Ensure proper utilization of financial and human resources, as assigned by the program management.
    Contribute to the visibility of CIMMYT’s research, partnerships, and impacts, including publication of high-quality journal articles.
    Perform additional/other duties, as may be assigned by the supervisor and Program Director.

    Required academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:

    Strong interest in applied maize breeding.
    A recent PhD degree in breeding or genetics, preferably with Maize or other cereals.
    Experience with genetics, modern breeding methods (e.g. genomic selection, quantitative genetics theory).
    Statistical skills, knowledge of electronic data collection, databases, data management and interpretation.
    An ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and build capacity.
    Demonstrated capacity to publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
    Desire and ability to work collaboratively and respectfully and inclusively in a diverse, multicultural, multidisciplinary work environment.
    Significant amount of national and international travel will be required

    The position is for an initial fixed-term for three (3) years, after which further employment is subject to performance and the continued availability of funds.     Through cooperation between 10 CGIAR centers, The Excellence in Agronomy 2030 (EiA 2030) initiative responds to renewed public and private sector demand for scalable agronomic innovations as an engine for agricultural development through the delivery of agronomic gain in the Global South. EiA 2030 will combine big data analytics, new sensing technologies, geospatial decision tools, and farming system research to improve spatially explicit agronomic recommendations in response to demand from scaling partners. EiA 2030 is conceptualized around four Modules, assembling the core functions of an agronomy at scale R&D initiative for the Global South, and ten Use Cases, spread across the Global South.
    The CTO will lead the TRANSFORM Module, hosting the core functions of EiA 2030, including (i) the assembly of all data and data management tools, respecting FAIR principles, (ii) the delivery of predictions and turn-key solutions developed for specific crop x environment cases, and (iii) the supply of climate-smart and sustainability data. The CTO will also work directly with the Use Case partners, engaged through the DELIVER Module, hosts the delivery of services and products to partners towards improved productivity, resource use efficiency, climate change resilience, and sustainability. This Module aims at facilitating interactions with private and public scaling partners that require agronomy-related products that can be delivered mainly using data and tools available via the TRANSFORM Module. The Incubation Phase is planned to demonstrate the added value of demand-driven R&D, supported by novel data and analytics and increased cooperation between centers, in support of a ‘One CGIAR’ agronomy initiative aiming at the sustainable intensification of farming systems.
    Position Responsibilities
    · Co-lead the development of the EiA 2030 vision, mission and strategy.
    · Lead the implementation of the TRANSFORM Module, including the conceptualization, planning, execution and monitoring and evaluation of activities.
    · Implement the activities under the TRANSFORM Modules of the Incubation Phase, ensure delivery on outputs and report timely to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
    · Lead the assembly and implementation of all data and data management systems, ensuring all EiA 2030 data respects FAIR principles, in close collaboration with the representative of the Big Data Platform of the CGIAR.
    · Develop, in close cooperation with the EiA 2030 Chief Scientist, turnkey solutions that generically address key functions critical for delivery on use cases, formulated based on demands from partners in the ORGANISE module.
    · Lead the engagement of ICT partners and tools in the context of the Use Cases implemented through the DELIVER module.
    · Supply solutions that focus on sustainability and climate-smart technologies, beyond short-term solutions that focus on crop response and economic returns from investments in agronomic technologies, in collaboration with the CGIAR research program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security.
    · Liaise with projects and initiatives within and outside the CGIAR, research communities and advanced research institutes to source, advance and exchange on capabilities to develop and maintain the state-of-the-art in digital solutions of the EiA 2030.
    · Continuously innovate the ‘toolbox’ of the EiA 2030 and implement strategies for innovation based on priority setting in close consultation with the CEO and CGO.
    · Build and maintain the IT infrastructure of the EiA 2030 to develop and deliver digital solutions.
    · Lead a team of scientists and technical staff to build turnkey solutions.
    · Provide overall leadership and team management to CGIAR scientists with responsibilities in the TRANSFORM Module.
    · Implement efficient procedures for collaboration across the EiA members to develop turnkey solutions.
    · Compile technical and financial reports and report to the CEO.

    Educational Qualifications
    The candidate should have a minimum of BSc degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology Management or related disciplines, and an MSc in Agronomy or any related field can also be considered, if complemented with relevant working experience in the Data Science or Information Technology sector.
    Core Competencies

    At least 10 years of relevant expertise, with knowledge of agronomy and digital agriculture as a strong advantage.
    Proven experience as a CTO or similar leadership role.
    Excellent knowledge of latest technological advances that could benefit EiA 2030.

The Digital Agronomist role will be a key part of the Field Experimentation and data analytics in the Product team of UjuziKilimo.     Key Responsibilities

    Manage and Validate current data flows from internal soil analysis tools and define strategies for improvement to the product team.
    Define methodologies and models to engineering or other teams for standardized analysis and storage of results.
    Collaborate with relevant data collection, engineering, and analyses teams to develop more efficient, data analysis procedures and data interpretation.
    Collaborate with necessary stakeholders to re-assess the value of all of our data collection efforts and make recommendations to maximize value and minimize cost.

    Qualifications & Profile

    Demonstrated ability to assemble data from multiple sources (agronomic field data from a multi-region or large geographical areas spanning many environments) into summaries capable of driving decisions to meet business or scientific objectives.
    Able to work with farm-scale trial design, data management, and spatial data analysis.
    Excels at communicating data analysis at the interface of business and agronomy/data science through clear documentation.
    Extremely comfortable working with messy data-sets from a variety of non-normalized sources including literature and un- digitized sources.
    Understands the agronomic and financial outcomes that drive farm profitability; capable of using that knowledge to prioritize analyses and connect insights to action.
    Enjoys capturing complex analyses problems; able to identify and apply appropriate advanced statistical analysis techniques as necessary.

    Experience

    2+ years’ experience in Agriculture industry working with and creating value from field data.
    BS or MS in data sciences or agricultural discipline.

    At least 3 years’ experience of work with the NGOs especially in ASAL areas
    Knowledge and experience of working on pastoral livelihoods will be added advantage.
    Proficiency in written and spoken English language is a must.

    Makes sure that project activities are performed in line with the work plan;
    Ensure that summary of community meetings, seminars or workshops facilitated and/or attended by project staff is well documented and shared with relevant stakeholders.
    Together with the Project Manager, compiles activity specific reports for all animal health activities in accordance to donor and the organization guidelines.
    Together with the Project Manager, properly document the achievements and lessons learnt from the Animal Health activities and share with relevant stakeholders.
    In consultation with the Project Manager, liaise with relevant government counterparts, NGO and CBO partners with the objective of effective implementation of the livestock related activities.
    Establish an effective working relationship with government, non-governmental and community based organizations.
    Work cordially with local partners, authorities and leaders in reaching the beneficiaries.
    Keeps herself/himself updated about recent developments in assigned technical area and related issues;
    Facilitate trainings, workshops, experience sharing visits, etc, that are related to the needs of target beneficiaries, especially Community Disease Reporters.
    In liaison with project Manger develop budget and forecast for animal health activities in the projects.

    Qualifications/Desired competencies/Experience

    At least a Degree in Veterinary Medicine from recognized University.
    Up to date registration with Kenya Veterinary Board is mandatory.
    At least 5 years of professional experience in working in Veterinary Sector.
    At least 3 years’ experience of work with the NGOs especially in ASAL areas
    Knowledge and experience of working on pastoral livelihoods will be added advantage.
    Proficiency in written and spoken English language is a must.
    Computer literacy in MS – Word, Excel and Power Point confers advantage.
    Good concept and report writing
    Strong interpersonal communication skills.
