    Position Overview
    The East & Southern Africa Agricultural Economist will lead activities related to fertilizer, input and soil health in the areas of markets, economics and policy related issues that contributes to advocacy focusing on improved enabling environment. The Economist will support national and regional projects in East & Southern Africa as well as support IFDC’s strategic priorities including new business through conducting evidence based research and products such as development of policy briefs, research papers, that lead to developing concept notes and new proposals etc.  S/he will be based at IFDC’s Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya with regular travel to support regional projects of IFDC as and when required. S/he will be part of IFDC’s Research Team as well as the East & Southern Africa Regional team.
    Specific Activities
    The Economist will undertake the following activities:

    Provide technical leadership and support to the development and implementation of fertilizer and soil health related programs in the areas of economics, markets, and policy related issues;
    Liaise and work closely with Ministries of Agriculture, government agencies, private sector, associations, development partners, stakeholders and projects in the region and serves as a key point of contact in agriculture related policy formulation, analysis, implementation and dissemination;
    Maintain an active and dynamic policy dialogue with other Government institutions, donor platforms and organizations and private sector to facilitate technical discussions and engage in effective policy development and change in soil and fertilizer related issues;
    Coordinate meetings on key issues related to soil health, agricultural inputs and fertilizer markets, policy related issues;
    Be responsible for fertilizer, input and policy sector working group/platform meetings (preparation, reporting and following up recommendations)
    Provide support/lead in the development of new business related to policy and enabling environment issues with regard to input policies, with particular focus on soil fertility related. Activities may include the development of policy briefs to support new business, the development of concept notes and technical inputs into proposal development;
    Participating in and conducting training and capacity building programs on key economic and policy issues on fertilizers and soil health related issues.
    Developing and presenting reports and technical papers at meetings, representation in conferences and workshops
    Provide support in other areas of work and undertake any other duties as may be assigned by the BFS-Program coordinator and the Regional Director.

     
    Requirements

    This position requires a broad knowledge and understanding of economic, agriculture, and fertilizer conditions in East & Southern Africa to properly determine the issues affecting the functioning of markets (inputs) and the role of soil fertility issues affecting the farmer use and adoption.
    The position further requires specialized experience in input policies – in terms of formulation and advocacy at different levels and  the ability to lead and participate in the implementation of projects associated with development projects involving soil fertility related interventions; 
    Knowledge and experience for conducting qualitative and quantitative surveys towards generating evidence to support or test the fertilizer market and soil fertility related interventions that have potential impact on policies
    Knowledge of international development agencies, government ministries and agencies, and donors to prepare successful funding economic and policy recommendations and proposals to donors;
    Strong skills to use statistical and econometric analysis for better research outcomes
    Excellent written and oral communication skills to properly prepare technical reports and policy documents and to present lectures on research findings at seminars and workshops to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences;
    Proven experience and skills in project management, planning, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation (M&E);
    Superior level of resourcefulness and the ability to work independently, manage and complete multiple tasks simultaneously, and to meet deadlines under pressure;
    Proven ability to work cooperatively with a multi-disciplinary team, development partners, local communities and government agencies in East & Southern Africa;
    Willingness and ability to travel as needed;
    Minimum of Ph.D. and 5 to 7 years of relevant research experience or Master’s degree and 10 to 15 years of relevant research experience in an applied field of Economics or Agriculture

     
    Location & Travel

    This position will be based at IFDC’s Regional East & Southern Africa Office in Nairobi and primarily covers countries and projects in the region. Support may be required to other countries in which IFDC operates in the region with a travels up to 25-30%.

    Contract

    Responsibilities
    Research & Analysis to Inform Climate Resilience Strategy & Programs (33%)

    Conduct research and analysis to inform the strategic and programmatic evolution of Root Capital’s Climate Resilience Roadmap, with an initial focus on our expanding ambitions related to climate finance.
    Research and support engagement of potential technical partners working in areas such as carbon accounting, climate risk analysis, and climate finance.
    Prepare and present internal briefs for decision makers on research and analysis findings.

    Program Management & Coordination (33%)

    Coordinate internal and external meetings related to Root Capital’s climate resilience programming, assisting with scheduling, agenda setting, note taking, and follow up.
    Support internal knowledge sharing and collective learning across Root Capital’s global team.
    Serve as a resource to other teams on our Climate Resilience Roadmap, providing updates on activities and achievements, maintaining key documents, developing new content for communications and fundraising, and generally serving as a technical reference on climate action.

    Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning (33%)

    Skills and Experience

    Bachelor’s degree and at least four years of professional experience in research, analysis, capacity building, finance, and/or advocacy for climate action, ideally related to smallholder agriculture or natural climate solutions more broadly.
    Understanding of basic principles of climate change science; familiarity with measurement and reporting frameworks for climate-related impacts and risks. Detailed knowledge of or experience in financial analysis of climate-related investments and/or carbon accounting is a plus.
    Experience with research and analysis to inform program strategy and design. Proven ability to produce and present compelling presentations and reports for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    Experience with geospatial analysis, preferably using the ESRI ArcGIS platform.
    Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a wide variety of audiences, including Root Capital staff across our global offices, donors and investors, and technical partners.

    The Livestock Production Specialist will be in charge of the technical coordination and oversight of KeLCoP activities for animal production. S/he will be coordinating and leading the implementation of Component 1 of the project, “Climate-smart production enhancement for small livestock”, but also contribute to the implementation of Component 2, on technical aspects linked to production, in collaboration with the livestock marketing specialist.     He/she will be answerable to the Project Coordinator for the following duties and responsibilities:

    Provide expertise and support the implementation of KeLCoP activities in livestock production (particularly small ruminants, poultry, honey and dairy goats);
    Contribute to the production of technical training manuals and related capacity building materials, coaching and mentoring on animal production;
    Coordinate with relevant project partners, service providers, NGOs and other stakeholders on the plan and implementation of livestock production activities;
    Evaluate the technical soundness of activities on livestock designed to improve productivity;
    Provide technical advice on issues raised of livestock production and related activities;
    Establish strategic partnerships with pertinent public institutions, implementing partners, private sector, national and regional civil society organizations for enhancing effectiveness, and efficiency in veterinary service delivery and disease control;

    Academic qualifications and other requirements for the Position:
    Minimum Requirements:

    Master’s Degree in Animal Sciences, Animal Production and Veterinary sciences or related field with complementary knowledge in rural development;
    At least ten (10) years practical experience in animal resource management and good knowledge of the livestock sector in Kenya;
    Must have established professional and practical work experience in donorfunded livestock or animal production projects in Kenya or the region;
    Must meet the requirements of chapter six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010

    Other Requirements:

    Must be familiar with Kenya’s diverse agro-ecological zones including the ASALs, their different agricultural systems and development needs;

    Support the coordination, implementation, and monitoring of all HES project activities as outlined in the detailed implementation plan in line with 4 Better Health Project quality principles and standards, donor requirements, GOK requirements, and good practices.
    Monitor and report any challenges and/or gaps identified to inform adjustments to plans and implementation schedules.

    Assist local implementing partners (LIPs) in their efforts to reflect on project experiences
    Support accountability through coordinating project evaluation activities and assisting LIPs in their efforts to collect and analyze project data per specified mechanisms and tools. Collaborate with LIPs to prepare reports per established reporting schedule.
    Provide capacity strengthening to LIP staff through trainings, workshops, facilitated group interactions, as well as accompaniment through regular communication, and site visits to support the successful implementation and monitoring of HES project activities.
    Collect information on technical assistance needs of LIPs, provide technical support and monitor capacity building and technical support activities to ensure effective impact.
    Complete project documentation for assigned activities and assist with identifying information for case studies and reports on promising practices. Actively engage in dissemination and use of relevant knowledge in the field.
    Represent 4 Better Health project in meetings at county and cluster levels, working groups, and other events as requested, to support forging relations with the GOK, LIPs, other stakeholders, and the community.
    Ensure accurate and timely reporting of all assigned project activities per donor and 4 Better Health project standards and established schedules.

    Qualifications

    Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agricultural Economics, Natural Resource Management, Social Sciences or a related field. Master’s degree will be added advantage
    6 years  work experience in household economic strengthening Project for Vulnerable households
    In-depth understanding of donor expectations for Project results, outcomes, impact, and reporting.
    At least 4 years’ experience on Savings-led Microfinance models- SILC, VSLA, Community-based savings for empowerment- Saving for Change etc

    The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) as a member of CGIAR, and pursuing its mission to apply science to sustainably increase crop production and improve livelihoods, is establishing a breeding program for groundnut in Eastern and Southern Africa. This program will be designed and implemented in close association with national programs and other partners.

    The objective of this position is to enable truly collaborative CGIAR-NARS breeding programs that accelerate the rate of genetic gain and increase the varietal turnover rate of groundnut in the target region. The scientist will work with NARS, CGIAR initiatives, such as Excellence in Breeding (EiB), and other stakeholders to develop modern and effective breeding, and variety deployment strategies. The successful candidate must be committed to developing and enabling CGIAR-NARS coordinated breeding networks, which will include other value chain partners and collaborators. This position will report to the Breeding Pipeline Modernization Expert.

    The duty post will be Nairobi or a mutually agreed location within the target region.

    Specific Duties

    Establish and lead the breeding activities for the CGIAR component of the CGIAR-NARS network.
    Design and implement an effective collaborative breeding strategy to develop elite breeding material, and a product advancement process to identify candidate new varieties for targeted market segments and product profiles.
    With NARS and selected other partners, identify, obtain, and develop appropriate germplasm to sustain breeding programs.

    Duties

    Minimum five years of work experience in one or more fields of agricultural economics, agricultural policy, commodity trade, and marketing analysis/research that includes extensive analysis and report writing on complex subjects.

    JOB KNOWLEDGE:  
    Detailed knowledge of FAS goals, programs, reporting requirements and procedures, and of U.S. agricultural policies and trading practices followed by American exporters. Thorough knowledge of agricultural practices, market conditions, and government policies in the host country. Knowledge of host government structure and responsibilities of various Ministries and offices, congressional and legislative processes as it relates to economic, trade, and agricultural policy matters is required. Significant knowledge of international agreements relating to agricultural policy, and a strong understanding of agricultural economic supply/demand theories and concepts.
    Education Requirements:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Economics, Food and Agricultural Marketing, Agriculture, Agribusiness, or International Trade.

    Evaluations:
    LANGUAGE: English Level IV (Fluent, Speaking/Reading/Writing is required (This may be tested).
    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) to create documents and spreadsheets, maintain and update databases, and develop presentations. Use of FAS specialized software and data analysis programs. Must be knowledgeable in analyzing agricultural production, global agricultural trade concepts, and economic supply/demand concepts. Required to analyze and apply complex statistical data and maintain data sets for accurate commodity and trade reporting. Drafts highly specialized reports on markets and trade policy, Must have excellent time management skills to cope with the diversity of work and deadlines. Ability to work effectively with government, public, and private individuals to obtain information and resolve trade issues.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Executing the evaluation and signing off of laboratory records and documents
    Troubleshooting existing products/processes in case of disruptions in the processes and drawing the corrective actions to be taken
    Isolating and reporting the non-conforming products, reagents and materials to the senior Quality Assurance Officer for her/his attention
    Monitoring storage conditions for materials and products and taking the necessary action in case of variation
    Coaching attachés, interns and new staff in the laboratory under the supervision of the Senior Quality Officer
