    The role
    As a farmer collaborating with Healthier Hens you would need to:

    Share information about your farms via phone calls or in-person visits;
    Share feed samples from your farm via our Sample Collection Protocol;
    Allow accompanying certified vets to perform on-farm welfare indicator assessments.

    What we are looking for

    Deep litter system
    At least 500 hens
    Accommodate 1 farm visit a month (in December, January and February). During each visit, a certain number of hens will be examined non-invasively, for example via feather examination, bone palpation, visual foot health inspection.
    Allow feed samples of commercial feeds to be collected for quality analysis.

    What we offer

    Ksh 1225 per visit
    Feed quality analysis at accredited laboratories for their content of key nutrients (calcium, phosphorous, vitamin D3 and protein).
    Veterinarians to help farmers troubleshoot on farm issues via sharing resources and knowledge on good management practices, welfare assurance, biosecurity, bookkeeping, and barn maintenance.

    Job Description
    Terms of service: Permanent and pensionable.
    Reporting to the Seed Quality Assurance Manager.
    Duties and responsibilities will include:

    To carry out authorized seed sampling, seed testing (purity testing, germination testing, moisture testing) as per the seeds and plant varieties (seeds) regulations and authorization guidelines.
    Coordinate technical operations of the seed testing laboratory and develop control standards.
    Ensure maintenance of records of all quality activities and test methods.
    Check through and sign all Certificates of analysis generated by or for Kenya Seed Co. Ltd before presenting for approval by Quality Assurance Manager.
    Undertake quarterly ISTA and other regulatory proficiency testing programs.
    Coordinate maintenance, repair, servicing and calibration programs for all seed testing equipment.
    Indentify, oversee investigation and record non-conformities and potential non-conformities in the Laboratory on Corrective Action Requests and Preventive Action Requests respectively.
    Spearhead programs to continuously improve the performance of the laboratory and/or quality of seed testing services.
    Review seed research reports for customers or publication to ISTA or other organizations.
    Prepare work plans and periodic work progress reports.

    Bachelors Degree in Seed Technology, Botany, Biochemistry, Applied Biology qualifications from a recognized institution; or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
    At least eight (8) years relevant work experience in Public Service or Private Sector;
    Membership to relevant professional body.
    iManagement Course lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.
    Problem-solving and decision-making abilities;
    The ability to work under pressure;
    Good communication and presentation skills;

    The consultancy/consultant team will be primarily responsible for:

    Development/design of end-of-year monitoring and evaluation tools, including questionnaires for HH survey and checklist and tools for group interaction, including FGD with target beneficiaries at village levels.
    Share the study design, including process, methods, and questionnaires/checklist, with the project team, collect feedback, and finalize the study design.
    Pre‐test questionnaires and other tools in one of the project sites.
    Submit an inception report.
    Debrief/discuss with the project team about the effectiveness of the questionnaire, checklists, and other tools used in the pre‐test, collect feedback and finalize them.
    Orient, train, and supervise the enumerators.
    Carry out fieldwork together with enumerators.
    Ensure the quality of information collected from fields, cross-check with the validity of information collected, and verify/revise where needed.
    Update the progress of the study on a weekly basis to the Project Officer.
    Analyze data and prepare quality reports.
    Give a presentation of the draft report to Solidaridad, and;
    Submit a final report (a compiled version of the report ‐ both hard copy and electronic version in word format) to the project after incorporating the feedback and suggestions from Solidaridad and CGA.

    Deliverables:

    An expression of interest (EOI) for the Monitoring and Evaluation, outlining a detailed methodology for implementation of the survey, including proposed sample sizes;
    An evaluation design methodology that satisfactorily demonstrates how the end-of-year monitoring and evaluation will be evaluated;
    A work plan for the evaluation exercise;
    A presentation of survey methodology to project team in an inception meeting and later incorporate suggestions in the final inception report.
    An inception report demonstrating understanding of the assignment within one week from the start of the assignment;
    Tools for the evaluation exercise;
    Draft report for feedback and comments from Solidaridad and partners involved;
    A well-written project evaluation report of not more than 30 pages on EYP addressing the objectives of the assignment within 30 days of the assignment. (Outline of the report to be shared with the successful consultant);
    A power point Presentation on the main findings of the study for validation involving project teams and other stakeholders as agreed with the project team.

    Technical SUPPORT
    The successful consultant will work under the supervision of the Project Manager with technical support from the Project and M & E Officers. The Project Officer will support the process through the provision of information and linkages to project beneficiaries and stakeholders at the sub-county and community levels.
    Expert/Consultant’s Profile:
    Consultancy firms/companies with verifiable research work in the cereals value chains and who fulfill the following requirements are encouraged to express their interests.
    Academic Qualifications

    Relevant degree(s) in social sciences, Agriculture, or development studies

    Professional Qualifications

    Experience in results-based monitoring and evaluation;
    Ability to design and plan evaluation approaches and research methodologies, including quantitative and qualitative research methods.
    Experience in designing and conducting impact evaluation using experimental or quasi-experimental techniques;
    Statistical analysis skills and strong proficiency with data analysis packages.
    Proven experience in conducting end-of-project monitoring and evaluations, impact studies, and evaluations, preferably on the cereals industry in Kenya.
    Relevant subject matter knowledge and experience, such as Research experience with maize farmers, is an added advantage.
    Must have appropriate county knowledge/experience, including an understanding of the context of the project impact areas;
    Excellent communication and written skills in English and Swahili.

    Job Function:
    The position is responsible for overseeing and management of the avocado out growers and company own farm operations. Play a leading role in the implementation of other farmer development programs. Ensure the maintenance of organic avocado and passion fruits production with product organic status integrity, quality and food safety assurance as well as compliance to GlobalGap, Grass, SMETA and organic standards.
    Main Duties & Responsibilities:

    Overall supervision of agronomists, farm supervisors and other field workers by providing a proper leadership, guidance and control in order to have an effective field operation.
    The employee will have a leading role in implementing the company’s ongoing and proposed projects amongst company’s farmer’s schemes e.g permaculture, living wages and Living Incomes, agroforestry.
    Ensure a successful adoption of our organic production model in line with the up to date contractual agreements with the smallholder farmers.
    Increase fruit production and quality by amongst other intervention measures ensure proper adoption of agreed farming practices amongst the growers, e.g pruning, composting, pests and diseases management

    Play a leading role in the planning for internal and external organic audits.
    In liaison with the field manager and team for building a sustainable farmers base with organic status to produce 1.7 million kilos annually by first quarter of 2024.
    Oversee packhouse procurement needs for raw materials as well as standards compliance.
    Responsible for the management of the company’s farm commercial activities.
    Oversee the company’s passion fruit growing and other proposed projects.
    Prepare reports and up to date accurate records that pertain to the fieldwork.
    Communicate effectively about the company’s farmer development model, plans etc to farmers, project stakeholders and the wider public in order to advance its vision and mission.

    The Horticulture Crops Directorate (HCD) has established that there is immense potential for avocado production in Western and Lake Victoria basin counties that fall within KCDSMS’ sphere of influence. In this regard , KCDMS is commissioning a rapid assessment to document the status of avocado production and marketing status in the Lake Basin Economic Block Counties (LREB). These include Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Nyamira, Kisii, Homa-Bay, Migori, Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma and Kakamega. We seek to recruit short-term County Horticulture Sector Analysts to be based in the Western Kenya counties. The study will take a maximum of 5 days.

    Essential Duties

    Desktop review of relevant reports and documents from KCDMS, county governments, private sector actors and other development agencies on the following:
    Confirmation if the county has identified avocado as a priority crop
    The last three years’ county budget allocated the sector
    Details on active county avocado projects undertaken over the last 5 years.
