    Duties and responsibilities
    Overseeing of Field experiments

     Prepare field experiments (trials and nurseries), including trial designs and seed preparation using Fieldbook/EBS according to the breeder’s instructions.
     Prepare field maps and planting plans for field trials.
     Coordinate shipment of field trials to various testing locations within the region for timely planting, and retrieval of trial data from our collaborators (both NARS and seed companies) for timely consolidation and analysis.

    Seed Processing and Storage

     Lead seed processing and shipment with different partners, both internally and externally.
     Manage cold storage facilities by consolidating germplasm inventories and developing SOPs.
     In consultation withs scientists identify germplasm that require seed increase.

    Data management:
    Data Collection

     Lead data input and analysis of field trials with guidance from the scientist.
     Examine data for accuracy before analysis.
     Prepare historical data for curation.

    Data analysis:

     Timely statistical data analysis using different software depending on the objective of the experiment.
     Genetic data analysis depending on the objective of the experiment.
     Implement electronic data capture in all the field testing locations using the KDSmart or other appropriate application to ensure quick turnaround.
     Assist M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in divers data analysis.

    Assist in drafting project progress reports.
    Assist in preparing tables and figures from research results for project reports, publications, draft manuscripts, etc…
    Capacity building and Supervision of casual labor

     Provide training and backstopping services especially with Fieldbook and data analysis to NARS and seed company partners.
     provide technical assistance to visiting scientists and students.
     Supervise contract and casual labor in data taking according to instructions from multi-location trials in Kenya under both optimum and managed stress conditions.

    Other

     Implement mechanization and digitization in CIMMYT eastern Africa breeding program.
     Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
     Identify and mitigate potential risks within your work area.
     Take reasonable care of own occupational health and safety and that of others as obliged by CIFOR-ICRAF’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and cooperate with CIFOR-ICRAF in complying with requirements under any statutory health and safety provisions of relevant Country laws.

    Education, knowledge and experience

     Master’s degree in plant breeding or bachelor’s degree in agriculture with minimum 3 years’ experience in plant breeding.
     4 to 5 years’ experience with good knowledge of theories, practices and procedures within a discipline.
     Thorough knowledge of the field of work or specialized equipment.
     Basic knowledge of administrative and/or operating protocols and procedures of research support function.
     Basic Supervisory skills and experience.
     Sufficient competency to use the standard Windows-based software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and email used at CIMMYT with occasional assistance.
     Ability to effectively use corporate systems and other specialized applications. (User) e.g. Field book, R, SAS, META-R, AGD-R, and ADEL-R.
     Basic skills in Windows Operating System and LAN.

    Terms and conditions

    Proven experience in project development and obtaining funds;
    Proven experience in successful project planning and management, both technically and financially;
    Good knowledge of quantitative (and qualitative) research methods and statistical analyses would be desirable;
    Background in biological control of invasive alien plants would be a benefit;

    Literature review on DTC legume seeds value chain—from breeding, multiplication, work with seed merchants, and marketing; sales and roles of civil society, private sector and county government.     Estimate demand trends for certified pulse seeds in Kenya/SEK in last 4 years and identify gaps at each level that can be addressed to increase certified seed uptake by farmers especially in the ASAL areas of Kenya.
    Develop a methodology for collecting any additional data/information needed to respond to the objectives of the consultancy. To be representative of the SEK counties of Makueni, Kitui and Taita-Taveta
    Conduct data collection activities and analysis
    A stakeholder validation workshop on the findings (place/county to be determined jointly with KCDMS)
    Provide a comprehensive DTC seed market system report with implementable actions that can spur adoption and use of certified seeds

    Deliverables

    Inception report (max 8 pages +Annexes) within 8 calendar days of signing the contract. To include:
    Findings of literature review (5 pages) on a) key players and roles (giving quantities and value where possible) on DTC seed production and marketing in SEK; b) estimated seasonal production, sales by private sector, and demand by farmers/civil society/government for DTC seeds in Kenya/SEK, c) potential challenges and opportunities, and d) gaps in that the assessment will be feeling
    Methodology to be used (max 3 pages), category of respondents to be interviewed, workplan, tools for data collection and categories of respondents whom information will be collected.
    Feedback collection from KCDMS team and selected seed actors (Breeder, Seed merchants and a county representative) and comments shared within 7 days of submission of the report by the consultant. This will include:
    Virtual brief back (max 1 hour) to selected audience (within 30 days of response to #1)
    Minutes of any modifications to be considered/made to findings/report back.
    Data collection activities undertaken, and analysis completed.
    Draft report ahead of the presentation
    A face-to-face presentation (max 45 minutes and 45+ minutes discussion) to a selected audience (by May 15, 2023)
    Final report – (max 16 pages) incorporating feedback from the presentation. Please include any cleaned data that was collected from the assessment i.e., FGD or KII notes.

    Responsibilities & Deliverables
    Embedding CSA in Signature Program Implementation (50%)

    Work with Africa regional and country teams to ensure the environmental aspects of the Signature Program project portfolio are delivering high quality, on-time deliverables, meeting or exceeding their contractual targets and contributing to relevant environmental, social and development objectives.
    Lead or support CSA delivery in Heifer Africa region’s projects by providing specialized technical assistance on issues related to climate, biodiversity, and land degradation.
    Ensure that all projects in the Africa region are fully compliant with Heifer and donor-required environmental and social safeguards standards, policies, and operational procedures.
    Engage with project teams to identify, adapt, and refine technologies, tools, solutions, and approaches that advance the project’s environmental goals and plans.
    Oversee continuous monitoring and evaluation of environment-related workstreams, ensuring that outcomes, impacts, and lessons learned are captured to inform future CSA strategy.
    Participate in cross-sector initiatives that builds Heifer’s technical leadership on environmental topics.

    Consultant Management (20%)

    Manage a team of full and/or part-time consultants responsible for leading specialized technical strategy development, new business growth, proposal development, supporting existing projects, and expanding Heifer’s market position with donor, partners, and counterparts.
    Lead CSA talent and performance management within the Africa region that are related to environment topics.
    Identify, recruit and onboard consultants with skills necessary to achieve Heifer’s growth and high program quality related to promoting sustainable and regenerative approaches for smallholder-led agriculture.

    Minimum Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in business, international development, agriculture, environment, or a related field, and at least 15 years of related programmatic experience.
    Significant CSA technical experience in the design and/or implementation of projects involving climate-smart agricultural value chains, climate change (mitigation and adaptation), biodiversity protection, land/ecosystem restoration, and regenerative agriculture approaches targeting smallholder farmers.
    A minimum of 5 years in a supervisory capacity.
    Must have existing strong networks with high-priority bilateral and multilateral donors for Heifer, Tier-1 foundations, the private sector, technical and research partners, and other implementing organizations.
    Successful experience in bringing together both private and public funding for large-scale programs, and a proven track record of leading proposal development processes and successfully securing large-scale funding to support impactful growth in programs.
    Proven team leadership, management, and capacity-building skills with the ability to train and work cooperatively with diverse staff and consultants.
    Fluent in English (reading, writing, and speaking).

    Preferred Requirements
