    The innovation team provides technical and programmatic services to the rest of the organization around our global innovation agenda, which ensures Root Capital’s service offering continues to meet evolving client needs and market realities. The innovation team leads an inclusive and rigorous process to evaluate, prioritize, and monitor innovation ideas through the innovation lifecycle. It collaborates closely with innovation leads on Client Services and / or itself leads the design of innovations that benefit Root Capital’s client base and advance our mission.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Design new programs and services related to Next Generation Jobs that advance Root Capital into new opportunities consistent with its mission. This includes framing and conducting or overseeing related market research, as well as the design of technical specifications for the service, and planning and project management related to the development – and in some cases testing – of these services.
    Lead the development of the Next Generation Jobs innovation strategy and identify gaps in our current product and service offering to identify opportunities for innovation.
    Oversee the research and review of ideas for new products and services related to Next Generation Jobs, ensuring they support the overall strategy and fit with organizational capabilities.
    Craft learning plans for Next Generation Jobs-related pilots and oversee their execution including critical assessment of pilot performance to inform executive decision-making about the future of the tested products and services.

    Job Summary:

    TechnoServe seeks a Food Systems Manager (FSM) to provide strategic and technical guidance to LFS’s Technical Integration Team. Reporting to the DCOP, the FSM will have strong technical knowledge of the food and market system of the sectors and geographies prioritized by the LFS project.
    The Technical Integration Team will be composed of technical professionals across areas such as first/last mile distribution, agro-processing, nutrition, policy, gender, youth and social inclusion (GYSI), and entrepreneurship.   
    The team will be tasked with developing strategic approaches with the regional implementation teams across a number of work-streams; identifying national level priorities and supporting relationship building with national stakeholders; supporting the development of specific partnership opportunities across the workstreams; setting training and capacity development standards across the workstreams; and, fostering collaboration across regions and program objectives. The FSM will be responsible for ensuring that the team has necessary support from the CLA and Finance and Admin units, and is coordinating effectively with the regional implementation teams.
    The role includes conducting research around various market systems and identifying constraints to be addressed, identifying and coordinating local partners; supervising members of the project team; and overseeing project implementation, reporting, and monitoring and evaluation of the project.

    Roles & Responsibilities:

    Aim of the position:

    Main tasks and responsibilities

    Overview

The Enterprise Development Coordinator will report to the Project Manager.

    Responsibilities & Deliverables

    Enterprise Development (50%)

    Design and manage the implementation of the enterprise development strategy, along with reviewing and updating it as appropriate.
    Work closely with the field coordinators and technical experts to design and update training packages/modules, business plans, and sustainability models, and training materials for different levels.
    Conduct assessments of local enterprises and FOABs within the target market systems to identify training needs and opportunities for capacity development.
    Mentor and coach producer organizations on business and entrepreneurship development.
    Offer technical support in exploring business opportunities along the value chain of the selected commodity and in preparing business plans for cooperatives, self-help groups, common interest groups, and farm families.
    Build innovation in business development for smallholder farmers, cooperatives, etc., to increase efficiency and effectiveness.
    Coordinate value chain studies of selected commodities as required.
    Coordinate economic analysis of proposed enterprises along the relevant value chain.
    Offer technical support in establishing and operating market structures (e.g., collection centers, market centers, processing facilities, chilling centers, etc.).
    Provide support in establishing marketing information systems among value chain actors.
    Prepare periodic reports and document best practices and lessons learned.
    Build the capacity of project staff, partners, and stakeholders in enterprise development principles and practices through training and mentoring.

    Stakeholder Management (20%)

    Actively facilitate and monitor pre-cooperative/producer association orientation activities in the self-help groups and clusters as they develop into Farmer Owned Agribusinesses (FOABs) and Cooperatives.
    Facilitate farmer groups in the formation of cooperatives and FOABS.
    Design, develop, and deliver training packages/modules.
    Provide technical support in formalizing FOABs.
    Develop an institutional framework for FOABs with clear linkages to the self-help groups.
    Develop guidelines for the formation, management, and governance of FOABs.
    Facilitate the capacity building of the FOABs and management in effective and efficient decision-making, financial management, human resource management, operation, strategic planning and implementation, conflict management and democratic governance.
    Foster innovation and entrepreneurship within partner enterprises by promoting new ideas, technologies, and approaches to business development.
    Facilitate the partnership between the producer organizations and other partners/stakeholders.
    Represent the organization in relevant forums, networks, and working groups to share knowledge, build partnerships, and promote collaboration in enterprise development efforts through guidance from the project manager.

    Cooperative Values and Principles (15%)

    Actively facilitate the development of a producer association values and principles orientation kit that incorporates Heifer’s Cornerstones and cooperatives act and by-laws.
    Facilitate the producer/cooperative associations in the orientation of new non-Heifer members to fully understand principles and values.
    Guide cooperatives in establishing a system for the fair distribution of benefits.
    Guide cooperatives to be competitive in the ecosystem.
    Guide cooperatives in conducting periodic PSRP and reinforcing values.

    Planning, Reporting, and Documentation (10%)

    Develop and share monthly, quarterly, and annual Business performance and progress reports, success stories, case studies, lessons learned and best practices with the Project Manager for submission to the Country office.
    Participate in project team and national business meetings, to help plan, and deliver on the project objectives as appropriate.
    Participate and represent the organization in learning and development forums at the county and regional level, and ensure best practices are documented and shared.

    Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor (5%)

    This will be dependent on the specific duties assigned.

    Minimum Requirements

    Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in the fields of Agriculture Economics, Agribusiness, Business Administration, Rural Development, Enterprise Development, or another related field.
    Five (5) years of field and technical experience with a commercial sector, farmer cooperatives and/or agribusiness development in a mix of economic growth/trade,
    Experience in the implementation of projects within value chain competitiveness or market systems development approach.
    Demonstrable experience in value chain and blended financing is essential, and experience in access to finance or investment promotion will be an added advantage.
    Demonstrable innovation in the area of agricultural value chains.

    Preferred Requirements

    Experience in identifying and building public/private partnerships, preferably in the agricultural sector.
    Strong marketing, financial analysis, and management skills.
    Strong hands-on experience in managing or providing technical support to producer organizations.
    Experience in supporting and monitoring field-based projects.
    Excellent command of report writing, analysis, and presentation skills using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    Track record of building strong client and stakeholder relationships.

    Position Summary/ Purpose

    Drought Information

    Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail: –

    Ensuring quality control of data collection and analysis;
    Coordinating food security and drought management data collection analysis and responsible for compilation and distribution of county drought early warning bulletins including the feedback of county drought warning messages to recipient communities;
    Coordinating of county drought early warning systems and ensuring production of drought early warning bulletins and publications;

    Drought Contingency Planning and Response

    Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail:

    Ensuring that the design of the drought contingency planning and financing system in Kenya is consistent with international best practice and subject to ongoing review and improvement, including through the integration of appropriate technologies;
    Coordinating the generation and publication of drought contingency plans at county level, and the production of a national drought contingency plan;
    Ensuring that the content of these plans is widely understood by relevant stakeholders and accessible through a national database;
    Determining the criteria for disbursement of contingency finance and production of relevant technical guidance and procedures in collaboration with the National Drought Emergency Fund,
    Determining the level of response required and ensuring that applications for drought contingency finance are in line with the agreed criteria and guidelines, and that funds are promptly transferred to the counties within the stipulated time period;

    Drought Resilience

    Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail:

    Monitoring implementation of the Ending Drought Emergencies strategy in collaboration and in partnership with other institutions;
    Promoting the implementation of strategic interventions that enhance resilience to drought and climate change;
    Developing and implementing strategies to ensure that drought risk management and climate change adaptation are mainstreamed into development planning and resource allocation at both national and county levels;
    Developing and implementing strategies for continuous capacity development of county and national planners in mainstreaming drought risk management and climate change adaptation, through the provision of training, the development of manuals and guidelines, or other measures; and
    Supporting the design and delivery of the Authority’s knowledge management function by building evidence base to justify investments in drought resilience.

    County Drought Coordination Office

    Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail:

    Promoting the implementation of strategic development interventions that enhance resilience to drought and climate change
    Overseeing implementation of drought resilience, preparedness, response and recovery programs and projects.
    Coordinating the adoption of systems and mechanisms developed at National level for efficient drought management.
    Ensuring drought risk management is mainstreamed in the county planning and budgeting processes.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Technical and Strategic leadership and management

    KNOWLEDGE/QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ROLE

    A postgraduate training in project management, monitoring & evaluation, Economics, Agriculture, Environmental Studies or related field will be an added advantage.

    The Senior Manager, Regional Training Africa will lead and coordinate the development, rollout and implementation of training strategy in Africa with a primary focus on training producers, groups and supply chain partners on the Rainforest Alliance Sustainable Agricultural Standard.     Advise on strategic investment priorities through assessing field data, and communicating with key local internal (i.e. local Certification Support Partner Officers & S&A staff) and external (i.e. cooperative leaders and company representatives) customers;
    Coordinate with Knowledge Sharing Unit to ensure regional needs related to accessing global training content and methodology best practices, as well as reporting on training interventions, are we reflected in the ongoing design and maintenance of the Rainforest Alliance Learning Network (RALN) platform, and Knowledge Hub.

    Qualifications:

    Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent in a relevant field like agronomics, business management with 10+ years of professional experience in program management and certification; master’s degree preferred;
    Excellent organizing and communication skills with strong intercultural sensitivity;
    Demonstrated subject matter expertise in one or more issues critical to agricultural training under the Rainforest Alliance Standard (i.e. deforestation, Human & labour rights, agrochemicals management, etc);
    At least 5 years direct experience in instructional training design and implementing training programs with farming and forestry communities in the region;
    Experience implementing protocols for monitoring and reporting the reach and effectiveness of field-based interventions an asset;
