    The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking a dynamic, proactive, and experienced Food Science, Business Technology Officer for the anticipated Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) Project. Recruitment is contingent upon successful award of the project and the selection of final applicant is subject to donor approval. The selected candidate will be a “Specialist” according CIP’s internal structure. She/He will coordinate technology transfer on Orange-fleshed Sweetpotato (OFSP) as part of the TAAT program.
    The Position: The Value Chain Technology Transfer Officer will provide business and processing technology technical skills in the Orange Flesh Sweetpotato Value Chain Compact. The officer will work with private sector partners interested in adopting OFSP into their processing business. The candidate will also identify new businesses interested in setting up OFSP-based production units as a business. Therefore, the candidate should possess prior experience in business management to work with the businesses by impacting sound business management. The position requires supply chain management skills to ensure that OFSP roots production and supply to businesses is managed efficiently. The position will be based in one of the participating countries in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) and will report to the TAAT OFSP Value Chain Specialist.
    The Project: The TAAT program has been initiated by the African Development Bank (AfDB) as part of its Feed Africa Initiative with support from additional donors. The main objective is to harness high-impact agricultural technologies for raising agricultural productivity, mitigating risks, and promoting diversification and post-harvest investment across selected agricultural commodity chains. OFSP has been selected due to its high potential for improving nutrition in the continent and its strong growth prospects in the commercial food processing sector. The OFSP Commodity Technology Delivery Compact (CTDC) will include a range of private sector partners and public sector extension services to deliver technologies, training, and access to services to stakeholders along the value chain, from production to processing and marketing. It will be coordinated by CIP and link with the strong network of research and development programs implemented by CIP and partners in over 10 African countries.
    Key responsibilities:

    Coordinate the development of TAAT technologies adoption work plans in each country.
    Together with country leaders and Value Chain Specialist, assist in the identification of business partners in each country in which TAAT will be implemented.
    Provide expertise necessary for successful implementation of value chain compact activities, in close collaboration with country value chain implementation teams.
    Assist in the preparation of food technology outreach campaigns in each country of implementation.
    Provide expertise in approaches necessary to deploy technologies, according to the defined target areas, mobilizing all actors across the value chain.
    Facilitate the implementation of the value chain activities in all target countries and participate in the monitoring of progress made towards achieving value chain and TAAT-set goals.
    Provide technical and business support to all value chain public and private sector partners in each participating country and ensure that they are fully and actively engaged.
    Work with Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) to ensure that capacity is built in all needed areas for various stakeholders within the value chain.
    Work with young Agripreneurs in each country of implementation through demonstration and training, in close collaboration with the ENABLE-TAAT Compact.
    Ensure that quarterly and annual consolidated technical and financial reports for the Compact are prepared and submitted to the value chain coordinator office on schedule.
    Carry out any other duties as may be assigned by the Value Chain Specialist and/or Institutional Management Office to meet the objectives of the value chain.

    What we are looking for?

    Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Marketing, Business Administration, Food Technology, Supply Chain Management, or a closely related field to the value chain.
    Minimum of 5-6 years of professional work experience, with at least 1 year of experience in value chain development or products development, preferably in sub-Saharan Africa.
    Relevant work experience in agribusiness management, agriprocessing, supply chain management (experience with projects that link farmers to the market will be an added advantage).
    Work experience in product development at the industrial level will be an added advantage.
    Experience in projects involved in public-private partnerships.
    Excellent communications and interpersonal skills.
    Strong written and verbal communication skills in English. In addition, good working knowledge of French is preferred.
    Demonstrated ability to write, publish, and disseminate technical reports, success stories, and promotional materials.
    Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional, and multi-cultural environment.

    Programme Overview
    HortIMPACT (2015-2019) is a programme financed by the Dutch Embassy in Kenya that builds on the lessons learnt and up-scales the experiences of the ‘Kenya Horticulture and Food Security Programme’. The programme closely cooperates with Dutch and Kenyan entrepreneurs and makes use of their advanced technologies, products and market linkages in so-called business cases: the focus of the programme is on small and medium sized, entrepreneurial farmers. Simultaneously HortIMPACT addresses policy and market related, systemic issues at farm, industry and government level, supported by results from innovative and market oriented business cases. HortIMPACT is addressing the following three critical issues in the Kenya horticulture sector:
    Farmers’ inclusion in market oriented supply chains,
    Food safety and integrated crop protection, and
    Food losses in supply chains.

    Responsibilities

    Take initiative in identification and development of new business cases and take lead in coordination and implementation of assigned hortIMPACT business cases: business planning, coordination, monitoring and reporting.
    Build capacities of and promote and manage linkages between business case companies,farmers, producer organisations, technical and financial service providers, etc.
    Ensure market-driven business viability, sustainability and coordination and advise, facilitate and backstop where required.
    Ensure the three themes of reduction in food losses, food safety and inclusion are strongly imbedded and addressed in the BCs, including balancing benefits (gender equity and inclusion of youth).
    Liaise, coordinate and garner support from stakeholders (central or local government, other projects, etc) and extend the network of the programme in the sector
    Contribute to analysis, knowledge and solution development around the three hortIMPACTthemes and beyond.
    Contribute to the other hortIMPACT business cases where required and to up-scalingactivities of hortIMPACT.
    Manage and control quality of service providers.
    Contribute to hortIMPACT’s Management for Results Framework and system, working closelywith the M&E support officer to undertake monitoring and evaluation on all business cases and other assigned activities.

    Qualifications

    At least a Bachelors’ Degree in Business Administration, Economics, Agriculture or related field
    Over 3 years of relevant work experience in fields relevant and related to this scope of work.
    Proven experience in agricultural market system development, private sector engagement, and business management.
    Experience in linking farmers to markets; financial and other service providers.
    Proven networking skills in the sector and ability to maintain relationships with other programs,national & county governments, stakeholders and international agencies.
    Management, leadership, and interpersonal skills required.
    Result oriented and problem solving capacity
    Prepared to travel widely and undertake substantial fieldwork.
    Excellent writing and oral communication skills and capacity to facilitate dialogue across multiple sectors.

    Job Description
    The International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), is a non-profit public international organization in the soil fertility and agricultural development sector. IFDC is headquartered in Alabama, USA, with two regional coordination offices in Africa.
    IFDC is seeking to recruit a Field officer/Agronomist who will serve as the technical officer to implement field activities for an Irish Aid-funded project titled “Potato Value Chain Capacity Building Project (PCB)”. The project will be implemented in in Nyandarua County, Kenya, and it seeks to introduce improved potato seed varieties with an aim of increasing productivity and incomes while ensuring food security, and also link farmers to sustainable markets.
    This project will be implemented through a Private Public Partnerships that includes the county government of Nyandarua, Kirinyaga Seed Company, input suppliers and their agents, financial institutions. The incumbent will be based in Nyandarua County and will work closely with the County government officials in planning, implementation and oversight of agronomic activities.
    OVERVIEW
    The overall purpose of this post is to support the planning and coordination of agronomic components of the PCB project.
    Role and Responsibilities
    Main duties include but are not limited to: 

    Establishing and monitoring on-farm demonstration plots with strong market-linkages 
    Providing agronomic and management support to PCB partners. This may include work planning with farmers’ associations/groups, county extension officers, Agro dealers, farm input companies, buyers and other implementing organizations.
    Undertaking regular visits to project areas and meeting with partners and stakeholders to discuss barriers to success, opportunities for advancement, and progress made toward achieving project goals and objectives; 
    Prepare and coordinate field days with partners in the potato value chain
    Assisting in the identification of opportunities for project development and expansion 
    Representing IFDC in the county with stakeholders from public and private sectors, development partners and stakeholders to further the aims of IFDC in the region.
    Work in close collaboration with the Project Team Leader on project operations issues and identify synergies and alignment between PCB project and interface with other implementing partners in the County 
    Any other activities as requested by the Team Leader.

    Required Skills

    The agronomist’s work will involve traveling to meet farmers, using a motorbike.

    Good knowledge of the issues facing the potato industry – policy, market dynamics, actors – locally and nationally;
    Proficiency in MS Office for data management, research, training and reporting.

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    5 years of experience in agronomy or related fields;
    First Degree in agriculture, agribusiness or a related field preferred;
    Proven and extensive project management experiences, strong knowledge on potato production;
    Experience with extension models, training and capacity building projects 
    Proven and extensive experience in implementing agricultural projects addressing a range of issues across the value chain.
