The Microsoft Research Lab – Africa is a research institute located in Nairobi, Kenya. Our mission is to understand, build and deploy innovative cloud and AI technologies which not only address core opportunities in Africa and help to solve local challenges at scale, but which will create a more productive future globally.
We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team, with a specialized focus on Large Language Models (LLMs) and image generation models. This role offers a unique opportunity to advance Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies tailored for the cultural and linguistic diversity of Africa. If you have experience in NLP for African language, generative model evaluation or designing culturally inclusive generative AI this might be the position for you.

Responsibilities

Conduct research in ML, NLP, and LLMs to improve AI technologies for African cultures and languages.
Establish new ways of benchmarking multi-modal output and methods for iteratively improving that output.
Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, integrating insights from different research specialties including human-computer interaction into your research
Analyze, validate, and document research findings and methodologies.
Publish research findings in leading AI journals and conferences.
Mentor students, interns, and junior researchers in related fields.

Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. candidate in the field of Computational Linguistics, Computer Science, Data Science, AI, or a related field.
Passionate about building equitable AI solutions for Africa.
Proficiency in NLP and AI, with specific interest in LLMs and their applications.
Demonstrated experience with Python, NLP frameworks and related libraries.
Solid background in Data Science and Machine Learning techniques.
Ability to work with complex datasets and computational models.
Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

Desirable: Experience in writing papers for academic journals and conferences, such as EMNLP, NAACL, ACL.

African Management Institute is looking for skilled and detail-oriented Enumerators to assist with data collection for our Impact Reporting initiative on a short term contract. Responsibilities:

Participate in training sessions and meetings to enhance skills and knowledge related to data collection and survey methodologies at AMI offices.
Conduct virtual data collection for the 2023 Impact reporting using a designated survey tool over the phone.
Follow a standardized script to ensure consistency and accuracy in data collection.
Update an online workbook/ sheet with collected data in accordance with relevant AMI requirements.
Adhere to established protocols and procedures while collecting the data.
Support entrepreneurs who have not been able to finish the survey by helping them through the process of filling in.
Meet all targets set for the number of entrepreneurs/respondents reached within specified timeframes.
Maintain confidentiality and integrity of data collected during the survey process.
Provide regular updates on progress, challenges, and any necessary adjustments to the supervisor.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field (e.g., social sciences, statistics, public health, etc.).
Previous experience in data collection, preferably in a virtual or phone-based setting.
Proficiency in using survey tools and online workbooks (e.g., Google Forms, Microsoft Excel, etc.).
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Good command of English and Kiswahili languages.
Strong attention to detail and ability to collect data accurately.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while also functioning well within a team environment.
Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines.
Demonstrated commitment to maintaining data quality and confidentiality.

Knowledge of regulations about research, including IREC and acquisition of the relevant research permits.

Industrial Attachment

The Media Council of Kenya in partnership with recognized media outlets runs an industrial attach- ment programme that is geared towards providing journalism/communication students with practical work experience before graduation and preparing them for the job market.

Duration of the Industrial Attachment

Responsibilities:

Independently design and execute a mixed-methods research framework.
Collect, organize, and analyze qualitative and quantitative data from patient records, interviews, and surveys.
Conduct a comprehensive literature review and integrate findings into the study.
Develop, test, and refine research tools, including demographic questionnaires and semi-structured interviews.
