Purpose
The main purpose of this position is to coordinate a team of 4 – 5 people, in cooperation with two Kenyan human rights organisations, to implement the project in several Kenyan counties. KIOS is the lead organisation, and CSO-Network and InformAction are the implementing partners in Kenya. The thematic focuses of the project are Democracy and the Rule of Law, Non-Discrimination and Gender Equality, and Business and Human Rights. The focus is on sub-granting and capacity building of Kenyan CBOs and grassroots civil society groups as they protect and promote human rights.
The beneficiaries of the action are the communities that the intended target groups represent. The primary target groups of the action are
Grassroots organisations and CBOs in 15 priority counties
Community action teams,
Citizens-activist journalists,
Social Justice Centres, community level activist groups
The project includes a strong co-creation emphasis together with the Kenyan organisations, developing an approach of training and funding local human rights groups through the European Union mandate.
Main duties and responsibilities
Coordinating the whole project in accordance with the project work plan under the guidance of the Steering Committee
Participation in the selection of local human rights funding
Encouraging a programmatic approach based on synergies and complementarities
Human Resource management of around 4-5 employees representing the KIOS Foundation in the Consortium
Implementing the quality procedures of the project (i.e., Human Rights Based Approach to programming)
Managing part of the sub-grants, and the mentoring of sub-grantees, especially regarding reporting and financial management
Planning and organising the Programme Implementation Meetings (PIT) and Monitoring and Evaluation Team meetings and subsequent reporting
Liaising with the EU Commission and other stakeholders
Reporting to the Steering Committee and KIOS’s ED and finance officer and other stakeholders as well as to the EU Commission
Target profile
The ideal candidate is familiar with EU project implementation, has work experience in African countries and is familiar with working with grassroots organisations and human rights.
Education
Advanced University level degree in relevant field like Public Administration, Human Rights, Law or Social Sciences
Experience
7 years of professional experience of working in complex and challenging settings
Technical background or substantial experience in EU project management preferably in development country settings and development country experience preferably from East Africa.
Experience in community-based interventions required
Experience in programme planning, monitoring, evaluation and reporting is required
Previous working experience with Human Rights and funding programmes is an asset, but no a requirement.
Skills and knowledge
Proven ability to develop approaches, mechanisms and training packages
Excellent skills in producing technical and analytical reports and text in general
Ability to work as a distance team member with good stress management skills
Adept at achieving results in diverse teams and in contexts of multiple stakeholders with complex relationships
Preferably knowledge of Kenyan civil society, especially youth, women and LGBTIQ-led organisations
Knowledge of HRBA and RBM
Skills in training and developing staff
Self-supporting in computers
Languages
Fluent written and spoken English is required
knowledge of Finnish is desirable
knowledge of local Kenyan languages is an asset
