Systems Librarian

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Administer and maintain integrated library systems (ILS) or library management systems (LMS) to facilitate cataloging, circulation, and resource management.
Oversee the configuration, customization, and optimization of library software applications to meet the needs of users and staff.
Monitor system performance, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement solutions to ensure system reliability and availability.
Develop and implement digital initiatives to enhance access to electronic resources, including e-books, e-journals, databases, and multimedia content.
Collaborate with librarians and faculty to integrate digital tools and technologies into teaching, learning, and research activities.
Provide guidance on copyright compliance, licensing agreements, and digital rights management related to electronic resources.
Oversee the creation, maintenance, and quality control of metadata for library collections, digital repositories, and online catalogs.
Develop metadata standards, policies, and procedures to ensure consistency, accuracy, and interoperability across systems and platforms.
Implement metadata enrichment strategies, including linked data and semantic web technologies, to enhance discoverability and retrieval of library resources.
Provide technical support and assistance to library users, staff, and stakeholders on the use of library systems, digital platforms, and online resources.
Develop training materials, documentation, and instructional resources to educate users on best practices for accessing and utilizing library technologies.
Conduct workshops, webinars, and demonstrations to promote awareness and adoption of library services and digital tools.
Collaborate with library colleagues, IT professionals, vendors, and consortia to evaluate, select, and implement new technologies and services.
Stay informed about emerging trends, standards, and best practices in library systems, digital libraries, and information technology.
Participate in professional organizations, conferences, and workshops to network with peers, share expertise, and contribute to the advancement of the profession.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science with IT/ICT Option;
Master’s Degree will be an added advantage;
Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Systems Librarian in a University Library;
Must be a member of a relevant Professional Body;
Demonstrated experience with library systems, digital libraries, and information technologies.
Proficiency in cataloging standards (e.g., MARC, Dublin Core), metadata schemas and library protocols (e.g., Z39.50).
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills;
Excellent communication, collaboration, and customer service skills;
Minimum of one article in a peer reviewed journal;
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 Experience with integrated library systems (ILS) or library management systems (LMS)
Familiarity with library discovery platforms (e.g. EBSCO Discovery Service) and open-source software (e.g., Koha).
Knowledge of emerging technologies and standards in digital libraries, linked data, and semantic web.
Experience with programming languages (e.g., JavaScript, Python) and web development frameworks (e.g., HTML, CSS, XML).
Certification or coursework in information technology, computer science, or related fields.
