About the role
BURN is looking for a Senior Carbon Technical Manager who will be tasked with ensuring that BURN can achieve the delivery of high-integrity carbon credits on time, on the scope, and on budget by ensuring all carbon reports are prepared and submitted on time and in line with the relevant standard Requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Ownership of BURN’s carbon portfolio health – The SCTM shall be tasked with ensuring the integrity of all of BURN’s certified carbon credits across all GHG registries the assets have been certified. The SCTM shall be responsible for the management of the issuance delivery cycle, working with the director of Carbon Operations and respective BURN departments to ensure adherence to contractual and GHG registry obligations and requirements.
Management of the Carbon Technical Teams. The SCTM shall be tasked with the development and execution of an Annual Plan which shall document the specific team assignments and certification work plan for all of BURN’s carbon assets. The Annual Plan shall take into consideration contracted and projected issuance delivery obligations, field conditions and strategic planning as well as other directives and inputs as defined by the Senior Management Team and communicated by the Director of Carbon Operations. The SCTM shall assign projects to SCTEs and SCTOs, setting reporting targets and reporting functions for the junior technical teams, QA/QC and other BURN internal customers. The SCTM shall be required to conduct regular appraisals for all direct reports and review the performance of junior carbon technical officers reporting to the SCTE and or SCTOs. The SCTM shall also be tasked with the management of all of BURN’s contracted carbon technical consultants. Accordingly, the SCTM shall also be required to provide quarterly reports on BURN’s portfolio health carbon technical resource assessment and departmental efficiency to the Director of Carbon Operations and BURN’s senior management teams. This scope of work shall extend to all projects where BURN is contracted as a carbon asset technical consultant.
Ownership of BURN’s commitment to the delivery of high-quality carbon projects. The SCTM shall work with BURN’s Carbon Policy and QA/QC teams to ensure that BURN’s portfolio of projects is compliant with all methodological and industry-approved integrity benchmarks. These benchmarks include but are not limited to the ICVCM’s CCPs. The SCTM shall take the lead in reviewing and revising Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Control and Quality Assurance plans and strategies for all carbon reporting (i.e. project design & monitoring documentation and GHG computations, field data collection mechanisms and reports). The STM shall be required to audit and revise all SOPs and training manuals related to the data collection and reporting mechanism. The SCTM shall be required to manage a schedule of internal audits, distinct from certification audits (i.e. validation and or verification audits), to ensure compliance with the approved integrity
Information management – The SCTM shall work with the QA/QC officer to manage all carbon technical-related information management and access, including access to certified documentation and working with all internal customers to craft and provide technical responses and position statements for all carbon technical-related issues including but not limited to new methodologies, carbon principles and integrity review mechanisms, rating agencies, press and investor updates and or pitch meetings. The SCTM shall also be required to ensure that mechanisms are in place to ensure that BURN is updated on all applicable GHG methodology and rule changes. The SCTM shall review emergent trends in the VCM and forecast technical vulnerabilities and opportunities about BURN’s corporate interests as a cookstove and carbon asset developer. The SCTM shall also be required to lead or participate in technical workshops, reviews and seminars as assigned by the Director of Carbon Operations. As a function of technical information management, the SCTM shall also be required to develop and or update investor update decks with respect to carbon certification methodologies, ER modelling and any other applicable topics as assigned by the Director of Carbon Operations. .
Management of certification bodies and GHG registries. The SCTM shall oversee the day-to-day management of the interaction between BURN and contracted Validating and Verifying Bodies (VVBs), GHG Registries including but limited to the Gold Standard, VERRA, SustainCERT and the A.6.4 mechanism. The SCTM shall provide technical inputs to the procurement teams managing the selection and contracting of VVBs, at minimum providing a clear framework for the review of VVB certification credentials and performance reviews from BURN’s internal portfolio and from GHG-certified carbon projects.
Oversee Training and capacity building. The SCTM shall be required to update BURN’s internal capacity-building module schedules and oversee the execution of the training modules. BURN is committed to the development of local carbon technical talent and the SCTM shall be charged with the execution of this strategy, and provide monthly reports to the Director of Carbon Operations and the Chief Commercial Officer in this respect.
Managing the BURN Registry Accounts, ensuring projects are uploaded on time, Registry fees are paid on time, and all bookings are done on time, among other needs
Carrying out specific one-off special carbon assignments falling outside the scope of existing JD
Skills and Experience:
At least 3 projects certified in the last 36 months as lead carbon technical advisor/officer or GHG lead auditor or senior management position of a carbon asset development advisory firm or carbon asset developer.
At least 1 POA developed and certified in the last 36 months as lead carbon technical advisor/officer or GHG lead auditor
Demonstrable experience managing lead technical resources (officers, consultants or advisors), supervision and training of junior teams as project developer, or managing a team of other assessors from a VVB or Registry perspective
Demonstrable experience in contracting and managing at least 2 VVB Audit Firms through a validation or verification cycle
ISO training and Lead Auditor and demonstrable experience in training of junior VVB auditor
Demonstrable experience in participation in technical stakeholder working groups, methodology reviews, updates or clarifications
At least 7 years experience in carbon asset development or certification
Demonstrable experience in carbon technical analysis (GHG accounting training or reporting, technical consulting or advisory experience, work experience at GHG certification registries)
Demonstrable experience (at least 2 years) in managing teams of 5 – 15 technical and or project management or data quality or auditors
ACADEMIC :
Undergraduate Degree in Social Sciences (Environmental Sciences. Law, Economics, Sociology), Data Science, Computing (any) Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Energy / Energy Management, Systems Engineering, Actuarial Science, & Natural Resources
Postgraduate diploma or master’s degree in any of the fields listed above
Demonstrable Audit Certification (certification for QMS/ ISO certification and training)
MBA / bachelor’s degree or advanced certification in project management
Postgraduate or advanced postgraduate diploma or certification in finance, statistics, law, engineering
