Ombudsperson

OVERVIEW

Amnesty International Kenya has zero tolerance for corruption, financial mismanagement, and human rights violations. We are committed to creating safety for protected disclosures and a fair administration system that is expeditious, efficient, lawful, reasonable, and procedurally fair in line with our constitution and governance manual.

The Board seeks to retain the services of an independent Ombudsperson whose experience in organisational mismanagement and fraud and arbitration shall assist the organization to investigate whistleblowing complaints. The successful candidate will be contracted and deployed on a retainer basis between 2024-2028, the period of the current Strategic Plan. The role reports to the Amnesty International Kenya Board.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

Strong investigative and problem-solving analytical and research skills to gather information, assess situations, and propose practical solutions to address underlying issues within a human rights context
Demonstrated conflict resolution, mediation and negotiation skills
Deep appreciation of organizational policies, procedures, and culture with a human rights context and the work that Amnesty does
An ability to approach issues with an unbiased perspective, ensuring fairness and trust with all involved.
Excellent communication skills to actively listen to concerns, build consensus, and clearly explain processes and solutions.
An ability to understand and respond to the emotional needs of individuals experiencing conflict or distress.
Strict confidentiality with utmost ethical professionalism and maintaining trust with individuals who seek assistance.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

Working knowledge of legal principles and frameworks to ensure proper procedures and fairness in investigations and resolutions.
Familiarity with Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) techniques that navigate complex conflicts and identify solutions satisfactory to all parties.
Working understanding of communication and information technology tools to manage casework, document inquiries, and maintain confidentiality.
Ability to find innovative solutions that address complex problems and diverse needs.
Sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds and perspectives to ensure inclusive and equitable communication and conflict resolution.
