Managing Director: Kenya Operations

Mission/ Core purpose of the Job
To Deliver Shareholder value including, financial and human capital returns, positioning in the market place and adding economic value to the Kenya Operations within the social, political and economic context of the country and within the MTN GlobalConnect.
 
The role will provide leadership to position the Kenya FibreCo at the forefront of the industry. Develop a strategic plan to advance MTN GlobalConnect’s mission and objectives and to promote revenue, profitability and growth as an organization. Oversee the operations to insure efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective management.

MTN is entering a new phase in its lifecycle where operational and commercial excellence has become critical for success. This role must deliver in the following context.
 

Rapidly changing ICT’/wholesale environment
The geographic complexity of MTN’s foot print across Africa
Management of MTN Group Executives and Local Shareholder expectations for the OpCo
Management of customer and supplier expectations
Constant dynamics and local challenges in the micro and macro-economic, regulatory and legal environments

The role will be accountable to deliver the following;
Key Deliverables:
 
Main Strategic Objectives

Create a double-digit growth wholesale business in Kenya and deliver the financial targets
MTN GlobalConnect’s ambition to build a reliable terrestrial (Overhead &Underground) fibre footprint supporting high-speed connectivity across Kenya.
Connect Sub-Saharan Africa’s infrastructure network with North Africa, Southern Africa, and Europe through Algeria, Egypt via the African connectivity investment project.
Generate a breakthrough in broadband distribution and enable the supply of open access capacity to all telecom operators and other sectors.
Initiate new alternatives routes towards Europe and landlocked countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Bridge the digital divide in Africa and close the access gaps.
Support national and international connectivity needs for Kenya.
Enhance Kenya capabilities for high-speed mobile data access
Long term sustainable and low-cost capacity
Transforming Kenya into a regional Hub providing high-quality, and affordable connectivity for landlocked countries
Upskill and train people in the ICT sector
Provide an additional source of foreign currency income for Kenya

 
Commercial Growth and Customer Experience

Deliver top line growth across the wholesale business (fixed capacity, roaming, voice, SMS,VAS, etc)) – Leverage the scale of MTN to deliver future commercial benefits with a view to rapidly improve commercial performance within the next 2 years
Improve customer experience
Leverage new technologies to enhance commercial offerings and customer experience

 
Operations Management and Corporate Governance

Manage costs and investments to optimise resources across the business for sustainable returns
Manage and prioritise decisions to maximise return on investment capital and implement cash upstreaming measures in line with expectations
Accountable for prudent financial controls for the organisation as a whole
Accountable for MTN corporate social responsibility in the Opco
Accountable for Risk management in the Opco

 
Brand and Proposition

Ability to integrate and grow a brand by understanding the strategic levers within the market
Build a compelling and innovative Opco strategy that reinforces the current patron base and attracts a wider variety of new patrons; to ensure a sustained economic value driven business
Build a robust data analytics and CVM engine to aggressively grow market and value share

 
People and Culture

Continue to sustain high levels of employee engagement and employee NPS
Drive a high performing culture across the business
Focus on employee development in-line with the business strategy to maintain a good succession bench-strength for key positions across the business

 
Stakeholder Management

Creates value for MTN with key external stakeholders (regulator, government, etc) in order to influence public policy decisions to MTN’s benefit
Inspires confidence with the investor community and enhances the company reputation when dealing with stakeholders and media

Job Requirements (Nationality, Education, Experience and Competencies)
Education:

Minimum Bachelor academic degree coupled with a MBA/Masters
Fluent in English language.

Experience:

5 years of more experience as a seasoned general manager; in wholesale/infrastructure/B2B- Telecommunications sector/ industry as per relevant role
A proven track record of achieving financial targets
Experience working in a global/multinational enterprise with a good understanding emerging markets.
Worked across diverse cultures and geographies
Proven track record of a start-up, shut-down and/or business improvement project Worked across diverse cultures and geographies.
