Legal and Compliance Manager

About The Role
As Legal and Compliance Manager you will provide cross-border commercial, contractual and legal counsel in support of the business strategies and objectives. You will be required to operate with a compliant and legally viable approach to all business operations, ensuring that all legal risks and liabilities to the business are proactively identified and mitigated.
This role will report directly to the Chief Operations Officer and will have interactions with all parts of the business.
What You’ll Do

Provide operational and tactical cross-jurisdictional legal counsel and support, advice, and assist in problem resolution on a timely basis.
Provide legal support to the company during future funding rounds and ensure platform expansion is within legal requirements.
Proactively provide legal counsel as needed, conduct legal research and where necessary, work with outside counsel for advice on complex matters and local laws/regulations.
Draft, review, and negotiate key legal contracts to achieve business objectives, minimize risk and ensure compliance with company policies, laws, and regulations.  
Provide litigation/dispute assessment counseling and risk mitigation advice.  
Participate in all cross-functional projects on innovation, operational aspects, and development of the platform and the business.
Assist in structuring the business towards regulatory compliance, particularly in data privacy and tech compliance generally, represent and/or guide the representation of company interests in dealing with governmental authorities.  
Ensure compliance with company policy and provide proper training and support in the areas of corporate governance.  
Develop and support efficiency opportunities within the legal function to enhance the agility and effectiveness of the legal function.
Provide legal support and business solutions to ensure the realization of business priorities.

Who you are

Education: Qualified lawyer. Advanced specialization in TMT/IP/Data Protection preferred
Work experience: 6+ years post qualification experience.
Experience with data privacy, intellectual property, mergers & acquisitions, and restructuring.
Experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, particularly in the digital space.
Experience working on cross-jurisdictional or international matters.
Ability to be highly organized and effective, handle multiple complex projects, and carefully prioritize competing work assignments from many clients.
Strong communication skills, including written and presentation; ability to influence varied clients.
Experience working with VC-funded start-ups preferred.
Experience working in 2+ of our key markets preferred (Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, India, UAE)
Fluent in English, French/Arabic preferred.
