Position Description:
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing operations of the research laboratory supporting a longitudinal study on the impacts of extended-spectrum cephalosporin-resistant Enterobacterales (ESCrE) colonization. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in bacteriology, extensive experience in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) research, and a proven track record of effectively managing laboratory teams and operations.
Responsibilities:
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the research laboratory, ensuring efficient and accurate processing of diverse samples.
Implement and maintain robust quality control procedures, including the use of control strains and regular review of processes by project personnel.
Develop and manage effective systems for sample collection, handling, and results tracking to ensure data integrity.
Lead a team of laboratory technicians and coordinate their activities to meet project timelines and deliverables.
Enforce laboratory safety and biosecurity protocols to maintain a safe working environment.
Manage laboratory equipment, supplies, and inventory, ensuring optimal performance and availability of resources.
Collaborate with the project team to troubleshoot issues, identify process improvements, and implement innovative solutions to enhance laboratory workflows.
Communicate laboratory findings, progress, and any challenges to the project lead and broader research team.
Participate in project meetings and provide input on laboratory-related decisions and strategies.
Stay up-to-date with relevant scientific literature, industry trends, and advancements in laboratory management practices.
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator.
Requirements
At least a Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, or a related field, with a strong emphasis on bacteriology.
At least five (5) years of experience as a Laboratory Manager in a clinical or research setting, preferably with a focus on AMR studies.
Should be able to demonstrate expertise in the implementation and maintenance of laboratory quality management systems, including ISO 15189 or other relevant accreditations.
Must have in-depth knowledge of biosafety and biosecurity protocols, with the ability to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and guidelines.
Project management experience, including the ability to develop and implement detailed workflows, monitor progress, and ensure timely delivery of results.
Proficiency in the use of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and data management software, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy.
Familiarity with electronic data capture systems (e.g., REDCap) and experience in data analysis and reporting.
Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and a willingness to implement innovative solutions to enhance laboratory operations.
