Responsibilities:
Provide informational support about the process of childbirth, and bridge communication gaps between clinical staff and expectant mothers
Provide practical support, including encouraging expectant mothers to remain mobile during labour, providing emotional support and non- pharmacological pain relief such as massage and meditation
Provide culturally appropriate emotional support to the laboring woman, helping her to cope with labor in her own way
Support the partner and others who are present, helping them to participate in the birth experience to the extent that they are comfortable
Physically support the mother by suggesting alternative positions such as; upright, gravity-positive , encouraging fluid intake, ensuring regular bathroom breaks, and offering heat or cold therapy for stress and pain relief.
Help the laboring woman with coping skills such as breathing techniques, relaxing touch or visualization. She may suggest dimming the lights or playing music – whatever creates a soothing environment for the mother
Provide support to mothers and their families in the immediate postpartum period.
Assist with breastfeeding initiation and ongoing support
Provide emotional and practical support to new mothers as they adjust to parenthood
Requirements:
Minimum O ’level Certificate.
Completion of a recognized doula training program
Current Training in Life support skills ( BLS ,Heart Saver) or its equivalent
Demonstrate current knowledge and skills in childbirth education, labor support, and postpartum care continuing education courses and professional development activities.
