The UNOPS Peace and Security Cluster (PSC) is a principal service provider in the field of mine action with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), UNDP, UNICEF, Governments of mine-affected countries and other mine action partners. It is led by the Director, who has overall authority and accountability for the performance PSC on behalf of its clients. The Director is responsible for administering and providing oversight of the day-to-day management of the Project Field offices, both according to the client requirements and in line with UNOPS rules and regulations.
UNMAS
United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is a division of the Office of Rule of Law and Security Institutions (OROLSI) in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). UNMAS is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly (RES/68/72) to ensure an effective, proactive and coordinated response to the problem posed by a wide range of explosive hazards. Legislative mandates also recognize UNMAS technical expertise in responding to threats posed by unsecured and unsafe conventional weapons and ammunition stockpiles. As an office within DPKO, UNMAS supports peacekeeping and special political missions in accordance with Security Council mandates.
UNMAS as a component of the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) provides explosive hazard management capacities, including mitigation, to AMISOM as part of a logistical support package. Non-lethal tactical advice and analysis are delivered by UNMAS technical advisors located in each AMISOM Sector Headquarters and at AMISOM Force Headquarters, who support AMISOM planning and operations. UNMAS support includes both enabling (“operate in spite of IEDs”) and response (“defeat the device”). As a component of the UN Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) UNMAS also supports the Federal Government of Somalia, including the Somali Police Force, Somali Explosive Management Authority and National Security Advisor.

Under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Information Management Officer, the Information Management (IM) Associate will work closely with UNMAS Somalia projects, involved sections and key stakeholders to enable and enhance IM processes, systems and assist with data visualization and analytical insight through standardized tools, dashboards and processes – the end goal being better, data-driven decisions. This is a cross-disciplinary role with a primary focus on IM processes and systems, but which will also support other initiatives related to IM, including (but not limited to) knowledge management and the standardization of IM processes and systems.
The IM Associate will be responsible for the following duties:
Perform regular audit of mine action information to ensure data completeness, integrity and quality;
Ensure collected data quality, accuracy and consistency for accurate comparability based on established standards and procedures (SOP);
Assist efforts in the identification of data sources, ensures the processing of collected data is in line with programme planning, monitoring, decision making and reporting needs;
Support in leading the maintenance and updates of the programme databases and archives;
Ensure the security and integrity of all programme’s Information Management Systems (IMS) and repositories is in place and in compliance with SOP;
Oversee the qualitative and quantitative IMS data clean-up processes;
Support in managing and updating datasets linked to related dashboards to enable quick and efficient visual analysis;
Assist with the maintenance of spatial baseline and operational datasets by following relevant standards;
Assist with the production and updating of high-quality map products and maintain a repository of spatial data and geodatabases;
Provide remote support to UNMAS Somalia IMS Portal users;
Support in preparation and printing of informative maps and other printing products;
Update Geodatabases and use updated themes on produced maps;
Perform other tasks assigned by the line manager.
Education/Experience/Language requirements
Education
A first level University degree (Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent) with two years of relevant experience, OR
High School (Secondary or equivalent) with six years of relevant experience is required.
Experience
Relevant experience is defined as experience in information management, information systems, data management, data analysis or data visualization, Geographic Information System (GIS), GIS mapping, or related field.
Experience in GIS project design, data modelling, visualization or presentation is required.
Language Requirements
Fluency in English (writing, speaking and reading) is required
Fluency in Kiswahili (writing, speaking and reading) is required
