Head of Department, Pathology

Duties & Responsibilities: 

Strategy, policy and processes implementation – Oversee the department by providing leadership and direction in the development and implementation of effective pathology and laboratory strategies, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the regulatory bodies and ensure sustainable growth of the department. 
Consultation – Provide medical expertise and consultations to referring specialties regarding the medical significance of laboratory findings and utilization of the laboratory as appropriate 
Quality Assurance – Provides guidance and facilitates the development and implementation of quality assessment plans by monitoring the overall quality of the total testing process and ensuring continuous improvement of the laboratory’s performance and services. Ensure appropriate documentation is completed and maintained 
Actively participate in each stage to ensure testing systems provide quality laboratory and pathology services for pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing. Conduct verification of procedures used checking accuracy, precision, and other pertinent performance characteristics of the method to be used. 
Lead in clinical audit and proactive risk management and facilitate the production of all data/information required for same in accordance with regulatory, statutory and corporate policies and procedures 
Facilitate the provision of safety conditions by monitoring physical and environmental conditions in the laboratories to ensure safety from physical, chemical and biological hazards 
Administrative and Management Responsibilities – As the Head of Department, provide effective and efficient management and administration services including budget planning and control, manpower and resource planning to ensure smooth running of the department 
Learning and Development – Support learning and development initiatives by identifying skills gaps and providing learning and development opportunities for the medical and pathology staff. Plan and direct research and development appropriate to the facility

Qualifications, Regulatory & Legal Requirements 

Master of Medicine or equivalent qualification in Pathology from a recognized institution (sub-specialization in Chemical Pathology Toxicology, Ocularpathology, Cytopathology, Dermatopathology, Forensic Pathology, Haematology & Blood Transfusion, Immunopathology, Clinical Microbiology, Molecular Pathology or Paediatric & Perinatal Pathology will be an added advantage). 
Minimum of 2 years experience since graduating with MMed (Pathology). 
Registration as a Specialist (Pathology) from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC). 
Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine and Bachelor’s in Surgery or its equivalent from a recognized institution. 
Must have a valid practicing license as a specialist from the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC). 
Minimum of 8 years working experience with 3 years at senior management level in the health care sector.
