Project Summary

Bechtel is supporting an ambitious programme to deliver multiple data centres across 10 African countries. This programme will initially provide at least 70MW capacity of much needed interconnected carrier and cloud-neutral data facilities in this currently under-served and rapidly expanding market. Bechtel will provide central programme management and in-country deployed teams to deliver engineering, procurement and construction services tailored to location specific requirements. Position Summary

Deployed to support a specific data centre project (-in this case Nairobi), the Field Engineer (Mechanical) will report to the Project Field Engineer. This position demands excellent communication skills and a strong collaborative working ethic.

Responsibilities

The Field Engineer (Mechanical) will:

Maintain configuration control by implementing processes for change documents (FCDs, NCRs)
Review as-builts submitted by contractors
Monitor installed quality and progress quantity reporting
Provide safety leadership to contractors and participate in ES&H walk downs, confirming compliance to contract, design, and quality requirements
Support contractors in development and execution of Inspection & Test Plans (ITPs)
Monitor quality inspections performed by contractors to verify compliance with inspection and test plans
Support documentation turnover
Support development of trends for proposed design changes or any change that impacts the cost and schedule of the work
Provide technical assistance in the preparation contractor’s work plans
Assist contractors in the development and implementation of preservation and maintenance plans for permanent plant equipment
Monitor & confirm design documents and technical information is current and distributed to the work areas to support planned activities
Collaborate with contract coordinators to enforce compliance with RFI/FCD/NCR processes to maintain configuration control through to construction completion

Preferred Skills And Qualifications

Typically requires bachelor’s or master’s degree (or international equivalent) and 5-7 years of relevant experience or 9-11 years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree
Technical knowledge of mechanical engineering and application in construction
Working knowledge of subcontract management
Ability to drive a Zero Incident Philosophy
Demonstrated leadership in a team-based environment.
Strong leadership skills and ability to influence external stakeholders
Effective communication skills and ability to work with various stakeholders
Experience of construction automation tools
Broad knowledge of industry/regulatory codes, standards and design criteria pertinent to mechanical engineering
