Job Description
As a member of the Operations team, you will report to the General Manager – Operations and will be responsible for operating an efficient and effective Environmental Management System (EMS) and delivering environmental solutions that meet International Best Practice guidelines.
The main duties will include but are not limited to:
Leading and developing the Environment team.
Ensuring the EMS is understood and meets stakeholder expectations.
Providing effective and practical technical guidance on rehabilitation matters and monitoring rehabilitation progress against mine closure forecasts and post-mining land use requirements.
Working with operational and project personnel to build and maintain a positive and balanced environmental culture.
Ensuring compliance with the EMS through environmental monitoring and reporting.
Monitoring legislative changes that may impact on EMS delivery and update changes in design as warranted.
Managing the relationship and reporting requirements with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to ensure compliance and continued support for the operation.
Ensuring that a high standard of environmental practice is maintained in site-wide activities.
To succeed you will have:
A minimum of an MSc in Environmental Science.
A minimum of 7 years’ experience in Mineral Sands operations.
Excellent technical knowledge and experience in rehabilitation with particular emphasis on topsoil management, soil characteristics, water retention layer composition, species selection, planting methodologies, erosion control and addition of nutrients in a mineral sands environment.
Experience in operating and managing environmental programmes.
Experience in ISO14001 Management Systems implementation.
Experience in the development of Environmental Impact Assessments.
Excellent computer skills with knowledge and experience in statistical software packages and environmental databases.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
A good understanding of workplace Health and Safety procedures.
A demonstrable ability to work in a challenging environment with a multinational workforce.
Proven leadership skills which focus on building and transferring knowledge.
