Director of Marketing & Communications

Job Description

AMI is looking for an ambitious and talented Director of Marketing & Communications to lead and elevate our marketing function. This role is critical in ensuring AMI deeply understands our customers and delivers a marketing strategy that drives business growth, fuels customer acquisition, and strengthens our brand across Africa.

At its core, this role is about crafting and executing marketing plans that directly support the strategies of AMI’s business units—ensuring that marketing efforts are closely aligned with the needs of both our Enterprise and Impact teams. Given the diverse priorities of each business unit, we recognize that different strengths will bring value in different ways. While one business unit may prioritize growth and demand generation, another may require strong brand positioning and strategic communications. We are open to shaping the team around the right leader, ensuring they have the cultural fit, customer-obsession mindset, and  leadership ability  to drive impact.

Our ideal candidate is a highly collaborative and customer-centric leader, with deep expertise in one or more of the key areas below and a strong working knowledge of the others:

Growth & Demand Generation – Driving lead generation and customer acquisition through multi-channel strategies.
Product Marketing & Positioning – Understanding AMI’s solutions deeply and ensuring they are effectively positioned for different audiences.
Communications & Thought Leadership – Elevating AMI’s brand through compelling storytelling and strategic messaging.
Content & Brand Management – Building high-quality content at scale to support AMI’s business units.
Country-Level Collaboration & Local Marketing – Supporting country teams to execute marketing aligned with AMI’s strategy while allowing for local adaptation.

This is a B2B/B2B2B marketing leadership role in a sales and product-driven organization, where marketing plays a critical supporting function in driving revenue, customer engagement, and AMI’s thought leadership.

Key Responsibilities.

Growth Marketing & Demand Generation

Work closely with the Business Units to develop and execute tailored growth marketing strategies that drive lead generation, engagement, and customer acquisition.
Lead a multi-channel approach, including digital marketing (SEO, email, CRM, automation), events, partnerships, and offline activations to generate demand.
Support AMI’s event marketing strategy, ensuring high-impact, lead-generating events both online and offline, including AMI-hosted events, partner events, and industry conferences.
Optimize AMI’s digital marketing performance to improve conversion rates and customer acquisition.
Improve lead conversion rates by refining marketing funnels and sales enablement strategies.
Work closely with Sales and Client Success teams to align marketing campaigns with revenue objectives.

Product Marketing & Positioning

Develop a deep understanding of AMI’s learning products, services, and methodologies to effectively position them in the market.
Lead Product Marketing efforts, ensuring our offerings are well-positioned, effectively communicated, and deeply understood by our different target audiences.
Conduct customer and market research to refine messaging, value propositions, and product differentiation
Develop marketing collateral that enables sales teams, country teams and business units to effectively communicate AMI’s value proposition.
Drive go-to-market (GTM) strategies for new products and services, ensuring successful launches and sustained adoption.

Data Optimization & Performance Analytics

Build a data-driven marketing culture, ensuring marketing performance is continuously tracked and optimized.
Leverage CRM, automation, and analytics tools to enhance campaign performance and measure ROI.
Improve audience segmentation and personalization to drive higher engagement and conversion.
Implement and refine key marketing metrics to assess effectiveness and inform decision-making.

Communications & Thought Leadership

Oversee the communications strategy for AMI, especially for impact-driven programs, ensuring storytelling is compelling and aligned with stakeholder needs
Work with Implementation and Client Success teams to develop content that highlights program impact and success stories
Develop project-level communication frameworks to effectively report on outcomes for funders, partners, and external stakeholders
Create and execute a thought leadership strategy, positioning AMI as industry experts through white papers, research reports, industry panels, and keynote opportunities

Content & Brand Management

Strengthen AMI’s brand presence as the premier provider of practical business learning for African entrepreneurs and enterprises.
Build and lead an internal content machine/agency that serves AMI’s business units effectively, ensuring high-quality content production at scale.
Develop a structured, responsive content development process that meets the evolving needs of AMI Enterprise and AMI Impact.
Develop engaging content marketing that drives inbound leads and thought leadership,  including storytelling, case studies, digital engagement, and advocacy campaigns.
Ensure content strategy aligns with growth and impact objectives, amplifying AMI’s thought leadership and credibility.

 Website, Digital Systems, and CRM Management

Oversee AMI’s website strategy, ensuring an optimized user experience that drives engagement and conversion.
Manage CRM systems and marketing automation tools to improve customer segmentation, lead nurturing, and sales enablement.
Leverage data analytics and reporting systems to drive marketing efficiency and decision-making.
Ensure seamless integration between marketing, sales, and technology systems to enhance operational effectiveness.

Country Level Cross Collaboration & Local Marketing

Act as the link between central marketing and country teams, ensuring alignment while allowing for local adaptation.
Support country teams in local event marketing, partnerships, lead generation efforts, advisory for brand strategy and positioning, thought Leadership
Equip local teams with tools and frameworks to ensure consistent execution of AMI’s marketing strategy.

​Team Leadership & Strategic Alignment

Build and lead a high-performing, multi-country marketing and communications team across Africa, ensuring strong execution and continuous learning.
Guide and embed marketing teams within AMI’s key regional markets, ensuring localized strategies that drive engagement and growth.
Work closely with key stakeholders, including Sales, Product, Implementation, and Leadership, Country teams to align marketing efforts with AMI’s strategic priorities.
Define and manage the marketing budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources for maximum impact.

Requirements

12+ years of experience in marketing, with deep expertise in at least one of the following areas and strong working knowledge in the others: growth marketing, product marketing, thought leadership & communications, or content & brand management.
Customer-centric mindset, with the ability to deeply understand customer needs and align marketing strategies with business objectives flowing from AMI’s business unit leaders.
Proven ability to analyze marketing data, optimize campaigns, and drive decision-making through insights.
Deep understanding of B2B marketing, particularly in African markets.
Experience working in a fast-paced, high-growth environment, preferably in Edtech, SaaS, consulting, or professional services.
Strong leadership skills with a proven track record in scaling marketing teams and operations.
Passion for AMI’s mission and a deep understanding of the business learning and development landscape in Africa.
