Dean of Students

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The Dean of Students holds a critical leadership position within the university, responsible for overseeing student affairs and ensuring a supportive, inclusive, and enriching campus experience. This role involves creating and implementing programs, policies, and services that promote student engagement, personal development, and academic success. The Dean of Students serves as an advocate and resource for students, collaborates with various campus stakeholders, and fosters a positive campus climate conducive to student growth and well-being.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Student Affairs Leadership:

Develop and execute a strategic vision for student affairs aligned with the university’s mission, goals, and values.
Provide leadership, guidance, and supervision to student affairs staff, promoting a culture of professionalism, collaboration, and excellence.
Collaborate with campus administrators, faculty, and staff to integrate student affairs initiatives into the overall university strategy.
Stay updated on current trends and best practices in student affairs, and implement innovative programs to enhance the student experience.

Student Support and Advocacy:

Serve as a resource and advocate for students, addressing their concerns, needs, and grievances.
Develop and implement programs and services that support students’ personal, social, and academic well-being.
Foster a campus environment that promotes inclusivity, diversity, and equity, and address any instances of discrimination or harassment.
Collaborate with counseling services, health services, and other departments to provide comprehensive support to students.

Student Engagement and Activities:

Oversee the planning, implementation, and assessment of student engagement initiatives, including clubs, organizations, leadership development, and campus events.
Encourage student involvement and facilitate opportunities for student leadership and community service.
Foster a sense of belonging and pride among students, promoting a positive campus culture.
Work with student governance and student organizations to address student needs and represent their interests.

Student Conduct and Discipline:

Develop and enforce student conduct policies and procedures in alignment with the university’s code of conduct and legal requirements.
Oversee the disciplinary process, ensuring fair and consistent application of policies and promoting a safe and respectful campus environment.
Provide guidance and support to students involved in disciplinary cases, helping them understand the process and encouraging personal growth and responsibility.

Crisis Management and Student Support Services:

Collaborate with campus safety, health services, and other relevant departments to develop and implement emergency response protocols and crisis management plans.
Serve as a point of contact for students and families during critical incidents or emergencies, offering support, guidance, and resources.
Coordinate and provide access to mental health support services, counseling, and other resources to address student well-being.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A master’s degree in education or a related field is required.
Substantial experience in student affairs leadership, preferably in a higher education setting.
Strong knowledge of student development theory, current trends in higher education, and best practices in student affairs.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate effectively with diverse students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Demonstrated leadership ability, including strategic planning, staff supervision, and budget management.
Understanding of legal and ethical issues related to student affairs and other relevant regulations.
Experience in crisis management and ability to respond effectively in emergencies.
Commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable campus environment.
Ability to balance competing priorities, manage complex situations, and make informed decisions.
