Job Summary:
The successful research assistant (RA) will be responsible for conducting spatial analysis and creating maps for the campaign team involving public spaces, urban forest and other public land. The work also involves compiling and cleaning of existing or new data and analyzing from a spatial and non-spatial perspective. Finally, the results need to be summarized as tables, charts, or other visual representations in connection with the terms agreed with the campaign team. Resulting research will be developed for a variety of publications and presentations, including PowerPoint presentations, reports, writing projects, journal articles, and book chapters.
You will report to the Senior Communications Manager for Africa, and interface regularly with the Campaign Committee, Director of Comms for Africa and CSOs, government officials and media involved in the roll out of the campaign.
Position qualifications:
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies or a related field
Substantial experience working with ArcGIS or QGIS software
Solid grasp of common GIS concepts, techniques and tools
Demonstrated writing ability and competence with Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
Experience with spreadsheet software, such as MS Excel and Google Spreadsheets
Excellent communication skills and responsivity
Ability to meet rapidly changing deadlines
Good organisational skills and the ability to work independently
Good knowledge of the City of Nairobi
It is also important to have:
Strong written and oral communication skills, particularly when it comes to communicating technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
The ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines while setting and delivering on clear priorities.
The ability to work independently with minimal supervision and demonstrated strong work ethic.
Fluency in English required.
