Communications Officer

Job Description

Purpose of the position:
The Communications Officer will be responsible for collecting content to show inform key constituents of the work of World Vision Somalia and the impact it has on the well-being of children. Specifically, he/she will work with the Senior Communications Manager to produce content for donor & public engagement, media relations, emergency communications and internal communications. He /she will frequently share compelling stories, photos, videos and tweets on social media platforms that reflect World Vision Somalia’s work and impact. The position will work with teams to ensure brand guidelines are followed and aligned in all communications/resources and meet World Vision International standards.
Major Responsibilities:

Strategic communication

Work with the Senior Communications Manager to produce communications material that influence media, partners, and policy makers to champion child well-being
Donor/Public engagement communication
Proactively work with field teams and to produce compelling feature stories and issue-oriented reports focusing on children and their families that can be used for electronic and print material for effective donor and public engagement in the work of World Vision.

Content production

Research and author communication pieces, blogs, success stories and package them for various audience and platforms to show impact of WV Somalia programme

Media relations

Work with the Senior Communications Manager to develop and implement a quarterly media strategy to enhance visibility of WV Somalia in local and international media
Pitch positive stories to national media.

External communication

Attend Humanitarian Communications Group (HCG) and other meetings as they arise. Contribute to advocacy-oriented communications products and campaigns including web-based and print materials, posters, briefing papers, reports, stories and photo essays.
Ensure positive and consistent messaging of World Vision Somalia’s work with external constituents.

Emergency Communication

Deployed to disaster zones if/as required during emergencies to produce quality stories and photos highlighting the plight of affected people WV Somalia.

Internal Communication

Work with teams to contribute stories, photos and information for the quarterly newsletter that detail organizational changes, activities, staffing and other news about WV Somalia programme.

Upload WV Somalia content on internal data base site.

Able to function in a fast-paced, deadline driven, high-performance environment, and meet tight deadlines and multiple demands for support from a results-driven team.
Must adhere to set security standards
Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications: Education/Knowledge/Technical Skills and Experience

Education: Undergraduate degree in Communications, Journalism or related field from a recognized institution.
Experience: At least 4 – 5 years of experience in communications.
Past experience working in volatile environment or large-scale humanitarian emergency organization and or media.
Team player, ability to work with diverse teams and build relationships internally and externally
Website and social media management experience.
Must possess excellent journalistic and photography skills.
Ability to produce video and audio documentaries.
Highly developed skills in research and report writing.
Knowledge and experience of Desk Top Publishing packages like Quark Xpress and Adobe Page Maker.

Working Environment

Work environment: Office-based with frequent travel to the field
Travel: 25% Domestic/international travel is required.
On call: As required
