Job Purpose/Summary

The clinical instructor is responsible incorporating evidence-based practice into teaching activities at SONAM. The person is responsible for teaching in primarily clinical and laboratory settings (CIME) as well as classroom teaching at the School of Nursing & Midwifery (SONAM). Assists faculty in creating high quality clinical experiences for students as liaison between faculty, clinical sites and Center for Innovation in Medical Education (CIME) laboratory.

Key Roles and Responsibilities 

Coordinates skills lab (CIME) nursing clinical activities and ensures courses get equitable opportunities for lab and simulation usage.
Work with course leads to ensure lab requirements for each course is met and ensure all equipment and supplies are available as per learning plans.
Work with course leads to prepare CIME related practice modules, skills check forms, software use etc.
Work with course leads on skills practice sessions and assessments e.g. OSCE
Coordinate with CIME team to ensure students are oriented and facilitated in their clinical skill practice in CIME.
Facilitates clinical placements in conjunction with course leads.
Facilitates orientation of students to new clinical sites.
Ensures all correspondents with clinical sites are completed each semester and permissions for use obtained.
Seeks new placement sites as necessary in conjunction with SONAM administrators.
Organizes clinical placements scheduling, attendance, and on-site assessments and troubleshoots any placement issues.
Ensures all required student documentation is completed as required.
Participate clinical site regulator inspections, semester evaluations and recommend as necessary.
Utilize innovative and student engaging strategies in teaching and learning of courses as allocated.
Ensure course outlines, lesson plans and any other teaching and learning materials are uploaded on the learning management platform e.g., Moodle on a timely manner.
Planning and implementing teaching/learning sessions in class and in clinical areas.
Preparing lesson plans and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance. Assist with supervision of undergraduate students.
Participate in the development, administration and marking of exams and other assessments.
Engage in research in identified areas of interest in clinical practice and teaching / learning.
Participate in professional scientific conferences.
Publish research findings in peer reviewed journals.
Identify an area of clinical practice relevant to expertise and subjects taught.
Develop periodic clinical practice objectives to meet learning needs. 
Using identified objectives, engage in clinical practice.
Maintain a current nursing practice license and basic life support (BLS) certification.
Pursue higher academic qualifications as required by the Commission of University Education (CUE).
Develop and maintain personal faculty portfolio.
Identify and attend continuous development programmes.
Participate in faculty and departmental seminars, workshops aimed at building capacity, sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside the department.

Relevant Experience and Qualifications 

Bachelor’s degree in Nursing/Midwifery from an accredited and recognized university. 
Be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya and have current licensure.
Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Should have at least 2 years of clinical practice 
Clinical preceptor experience is an added advantage
Should possess excellent communication/interpersonal, organizational, and counselling skills.
