Climate Adaptation and Resilience Programme Associate

The climate adaptation and resilience programme associate will be responsible for owning and driving specific work streams and project activities within the department. The associate will work closely with Power Shift Africa colleagues and partners to produce evidence-based research and thought leadership, document stories, organise capacity building events, and provide strategic input into campaign strategies and plans.
The programme associate will report to the Senior Climate Adaptation and Resilience Policy Advisor with oversight from the Programmes Manager of Power Shift Africa. 

Responsibilities:
Research and analysis:

Produce workshop materials, workshop reports, and other relevant materials with the support of the Power Shift Africa team and other stakeholders.
Support PSA’s climate adaptation and resilience team to develop evidence-based policy positions and briefings on climate adaptation in Africa
Work with the PSA team to document climate adaptation experiences and lessons, including from smallholder farmers and pastoralists to strengthen adaptation and resilience approaches in Africa and global policy dialogues.

Project Coordination and Management

Lead specific work streams and project activities within the adaptation and resilience department.
Coordinate with internal and external teams to ensure timely and efficient delivery of project outputs.

Campaign:

Work with the PSA campaign lead and team to develop a campaign strategy and plans that aligns with PSA objectives through research, power analysis, and consideration of resources.
Work with the campaign lead and PSA team to implement campaign plans by using a variety of tactics, delegating tasks, and responsibilities.

Communication and Networking

Monitor the news daily and share relevant climate adaptation articles with PSA’s communications team and campaign lead where relevant.
Develop campaign and research talking points, narratives, and communication materials that is audience appropriate for the PSA team to use for events, social media, and key moments
Represent PSA’s climate adaptation and resilience work by attending conferences and meetings where relevant.
Work with Power Shift Africa team to produce multiple forms of thought leadership on key themes, helping to synthesize analytical insights and bring clarity and structure on complex adaptation and resilience topics. 
Engage in public speaking on the programme’s behalf where necessary. 

Stakeholder Engagement 

Coordinate meetings and gatherings for two national and one regional dialogue platform on adaptation and resilience
Coordinate event management and logistics for all engagements, workshops, and events
Work with PSA team to organise capacity building workshops for decision makers, civil society, and local actors such as small-holder farmers and pastoralists to better address adaptation needs in Africa.

Resource Mobilization

Support fundraising efforts by identifying potential funding opportunities and drafting proposals.

Supporting the wider team:

From time to time, support the wider PSA team on different projects, which may involve presenting our work, representing our perspectives or supporting other colleagues’ activities.

Qualifications:

Education:  A Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s and PhD degrees valued highly) in a relevant field (e.g. political science, climate change and development, international development, public policy, climate policy) 
Experience: You have 5+ years of relevant experience in an environment / sustainability related field (climate adaptation and resilience focus valued highly) with a social or environmental justice NGO 
Experience working on complex projects with multiple stakeholders and varying interests
Experience in positions of leadership in previous jobs, institutions, or communities
Experience coordinating logistics for multiple events, projects, or activities
Strong knowledge of climate policy,  experience working with stakeholders around climate policy development in Africa will be valued highly. 
Understanding of Africa’s development and climate context and opportunities, the political economy, and development partners. 

The ideal Climate Adaptation and Resilience Programme Associate:

Should have the permission to live and work in any African country, but preferably in Kenya or South Africa
Should have strong problem-solving, analytical, research and communication skills.
Loves working in small, dynamic teams and is comfortable working remotely (if relevant)
Can take independent ownership of a workstream and drive progress without close supervision and direction.
Can strategically tailor communication of complex ideas to different audiences
Has existing networks within climate adaptation and resilience spaces.
Can work with a high level of detail while maintaining a view of the bigger picture
Is comfortable both giving and receiving constructive feedback within teams.
