Carpentry Team Leader AA

Main purpose of job:
The Carpentry Team Leader will be the responsible person for scheduling and delivery of carpentry, wood and joinery works across the British High Commission Estate. They will ensure all members of the carpentry team safely perform Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive maintenance, fault finding, design, construction and inspection of buildings and timber structures across the British High Commission estate.  They will ensure a high level of workmanship and standards. They will lead their team in upskilling and training ensuring the highest of standards is applied in their work.
Roles and responsibilities:
Carpentry Duties (50%):

Carry out planned maintenance activities, projects, refurbishments and react to building breakdowns or faults in a timely, professional & customer focused manner.
Execute repairs and works safely and in accordance with the quality standards of the FCDO, industry best practice, British standards and Kenyan building regulations (National Construction Authority(NCA))
Take ownership of construction projects, repairs and renewals / re-building, producing technical reports, setting and achieving accurate time frames for completion of works, outlining all resources required, start date, end date, project milestones and dependencies.
Safely elect and inspect scaffoldings for works within the range of 3meters to enable work safely.
Lead and mentor colleagues in carpentry methods including design, construction, inspection and fault finding.
Liaise with technical & non-technical colleagues to provide updates on works progress in a suitable language that is understood by all parties.
Actively contribute to safe working practices and ensure all work is undertaken safely by self and others
Identify materials required and create work package(s) for refurbishment, improvement, renewal and re-building  to ensure all constructions meets the construction compliance standards of the FCDO and the Kenyan National Construction Authority (NCA)
Produce comprehensive bills of materials and estimates of costs for high quality masonry materials and labour .
Demonstrate continuous improvement in all areas of work to achieve best value for money, safety compliance and standards of build.
Typically duties may include: Routine buildings maintenance ,design for small projects, road /path construction, inspection, undertaking full building constructions / modification, repairs and replacement  in residential and office buildings and special locations (swimming pools etc.).  Working at height and outside work may be required on occasion including on high risk plant (e.g. Sewerage Plant).

Line Management (20%):

Set direction for the team and plan out work assignments to team members
Support team members in skill development
Coordinate monthly team and individual meetings to track progress against set goals
Provide regular constructive feedback ensuring any areas of improvement are addressed promptly.
Follow the terms and conditions of employment policies in the delivery of their line management role
Ensure that the team leave schedules are reviewed regularly to ensure an all round team cover in times of absences.

Scheduling (20%):

Agree programme of works, surveys and completion reports with the lead Foreman ensuring projects and maintenance is completed on time.
Setting  programme of works for the carpentry team and execute annual maintenance to ensure the upkeep of the British High Commission Estate
Coordinate with the Technical Works Group Administrative Officer on job allocations to the carpentry Team
Update clients directly on scheduling changes in a timely manner.

Professional Development (5%):

First point of contact for complaint resolution and updating with the customer through the Corporate Services Helpdesk (CSHelpdesk) for carpentry Requests
Conduct market research on new products and techniques for carpentry team
Work with suppliers on product quality and usage to ensure correct application is practiced in the teams work
Follow market leads, and remain up to date to changes to the British And Kenyan standards ensuring they are appropriately skilled as well as their team.

Health and Safety Compliance (5%):

Support the Health and Safety Officer in complete self-assessment checks on property compliance works
Support the Health and Safety Office on filing and record keeping to ensure documentation is available for audit checks
Lead by example in using PPE appropriately and preventatively.  Ensure their team uses PPE at all times

Essential qualifications, skills and experience  

Can demonstrate at least 4 years of hands on carpentry, joinery and cabinetry work experience
IT / Computer literate; familiar with Microsoft software including: Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel
Holder of valid drivers licence with at least 3 years clean driving record. A driver’s test will be conducted before offer of employment
Line Management or Team Leadership experience
Good communication skills, attention to detail and initiative, as well as good customer service skills
A flexible approach and good team working skill
Level of language required: Expert in English 

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience  

Grade 1, Artisan or Craft certificate in Carpentry & joinery or equivalent building course modules.
Civil works experience
Able to Multi-Skill. The applicant should list any other technical skills and experience they have in plumbing, masonry, painting, etc.
