Job Title: Assistant Librarian
This position reports to the University Librarian and shall support the cataloguing of the university’s library collection, as well as other collection management activities.
Minimum Requirements:
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science or related field from a recognized University in Kenya.
Must have at least five years’ experience working in a busy Library; Experience working in a University Library is preferable.
Demonstrated knowledge in working with open source library management systems such as KOHA and D-space
Demonstrated knowledge of access and use of E-resources
Practical experience in populating and managing E-readers such as kindles
Possess excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills.
Key Responsibilities for the Assistant Librarian
Cataloguing all library resources
Conduct Information literacy training
Manage the circulation desk operations
Participate in the development and implementation of Library policies
Managing the Library in the absence of the Head Librarian
Provide all forms of desk support within the library as needed
Participate in the Collection management activities
Any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor
Job Title: Senior Library Assistant
The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing efficient circulation services to all library users.
Minimum Requirements:
An applicant must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Library Information Sciences and a Diploma in Computer Science or IT (or vice versa) from a recognized University in Kenya.
Have 3 years’ experience in a busy big context Library ; Experience working in a University Library is desirable;
Competency in both LINUX and Windows operating systems.
Have experience in the use and management of e-resources.
Ability to upgrade, update and administrate over the Library Management System KOHA and DSPACE institutional repository.
Good skills in HTML, CSS, Python, Linux Shell, MySQL and Perl programming languages.
Demonstrated knowledge of digital content and metadata standards
Knowledge of scholarly communication issues, Open Access initiatives, copyright issues, and new forms of publication and research.
Key Responsibilities for the Senior Library Assistant
Monitors and advises on library & Information Communication Technology
Manages the library’s local area Network and maintains links with the wide area network
Maintains the library computer software and hardware
Training faculty, staff and students on use of library systems and software
Maintaining the Library website and database.
Provide routine troubleshooting of the hardware and software.
Updating and upgrading library systems, software’s and interfaces to meet user requirements.
Work closely with the ICT department to manage E-resources
Identify and analyze existing and emerging needs for new library applications or systems
Assists in the formulation and implementation of library-ICT related policies
Retain inventory records of library hardware and software.
Keeps current of all new technological procedures, processes and equipment in the Library.
Compiles, interprets usage statistics for e-content and prepare reports on the same.
Any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor(s).
