Animal Welfare Officer

Job Description

DUTIES INCLUDE

To lead the application of KSPCA’s quality of life assessment and use of it’s toolkit together with the resident veterinarian and respective kennel staff
To work with inspectors on humane slaughter plans, including developing visit plans, forecasting ammunition sales and planning joint visits as and when appropriate 
To support and participate in vaccination and spay / neuter campaigns set up by KSPCA and / or it’s partner organisations
To develop printable tools for new pet owners on nutrition, preventive healthcare and general care
To undertake random follow up house visits on animals rehomed
To identify and to respond to urgent animal welfare issues arising at KSPCA and in the local community;
To promote responsible pet ownership in the wider community and assist in promoting community animal care initiatives at planned events
To promote KSPCA’s neutering programme ensuring that as many animals as possible in the community are neutered;
To research and address feral cat areas with our feral cat population control scheme
To attend meetings and represent KSPCA on issues regarding animal welfare legislation and policies as required;
To provide reports and statistics as and when requested;
To attend internal meetings as and when requested;

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Professional Qualifications

Animal Health degree or equivalent 

Work Experience

At least 2 years of proven hands-on animal handling experience especially dogs and cats 

Skills & attributes

Good knowledge/understanding of animal welfare issues/law
Excellent and courteous verbal English
Public speaking experience
Ability to work well in a pressured and emotive environment
Ability to quickly and effectively assess an animal welfare situation
Calm and confident handling animals
Good IT skills, intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Strong interpersonal skills
Professional, caring and non-judgmental
Trustworthy and reliable
Ability to meet deadlines and work independently on projects
Proactive, conscientious, enthusiastic and diligent
Team player with other internal departments
Respectful of staff working at all levels
