JOB PURPOSE
The In-charge Nurse is responsible for the smooth and efficient patient flow within the A/E. Delegates assignments and provides supervision for the support staff in accordance with their level of training and the patient’s acuity. Works in cooperation with medical providers to ensure the quality of patient care.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervision of staff nurses in the management, stabilization and treatment of all patients at the Accident and Emergency department.
Management of departmental nursing Rota.
Coordinating medical training including Continuous Medical Education programs for A&E Clinical Staff.
Draws up and reviews policies and procedures to govern the Accident and Emergency department and circulates them for approval.
Attends management meetings and makes reports on issues needing input from other departmental heads.
Ensuring that Hospital policies and administrative regulations are known and understood by Accident and Emergency staff.
Carries out performance appraisal for department staff.
Ensures the competence and efficiency of staff in the department in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude.
Creates a work environment that fosters a high degree of personal integrity, team spirit and outstanding work standards.
Makes follow up on complaints received from patients in the department.
Providing clinical support during emergencies including resuscitation, admission, discharge or referral to the appropriate consultants and units.
Managing and maintaining the major disaster plan at the Accident and Emergency Department.
Participating in developing various clinical protocols.
Any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Formulate comprehensive nurses’ duty rosters to ensure 24hr coverage of the department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/ QUALIFICATIONS
BScN, KRCHN from an accredited school of professional nursing
Must be registered by the Nursing Council of Kenya with a valid Practicing License.
Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
Experience in acute care within the last two years
Current BLS/ACLS/ATLS Certification
Recent Charge Nurse experience (at least 1 year) in a busy Accident and Emergency setting.
