    A Senior Specialist in East and Southern Africa Operations will have the opportunity to contribute to the running and growth of an ambitious organization in the social sector. The Senior Specialist, East and Southern Africa Operations will report to the Manager, East and Southern Africa Operations, and work closely with the Operations team and will execute the following:

    Organizational Development Systems: Critically examine and optimize systems that govern how we work, from internal organizational development to our operational processes and systems. These systems include staffing, recruiting, immigration, onboarding and offboarding, people operations, regional policy, safety and security, compliance, and operations strategy.
    Office Admin: Oversee the Nairobi office administration. This includes office management, logistics, immigration support, vendor management, office budget and expenses, team benefits (such as health insurance), and other support that improves team effectiveness.
    Policies & Systems: Make IDinsight the best place to work in international development. Specific work streams and systems include recruiting, onboarding, offboarding, performance management, HR systems, alumni engagement, and policies.
    Executive Support: Provide executive support to the team with multiple tasks such as scheduling meetings, drafting communication, editing documentation, conducting research, etc.
    Culture: Maintain a culture of mastery, autonomy, and purpose. This includes driving our global culture and values, reviewing and maintaining benefits, team-building activities and budgets, and executing employee surveys and improvements to the way we work.

    Qualifications
    Must-Have Qualifications

    Relevant people operations, human resources, or international development roles. Previous experience in the development/policy sector or consulting firm is an advantage, but not limiting if not available. 2-4 years experience for the Senior Specialist

    About the DoD Team

    Data on Demand (DoD) intends to amplify social sector impact worldwide by making accurate data on hard-to-reach, low-income populations an order of magnitude faster and cheaper. DoD works via:
    Networks of hyper-local surveyors that execute data collection tasks near their homes
    Representative, mobile-enabled household panels for rapid phone surveys
    Custom software to efficiently manage  productivity of remote staff and data quality
    DoD can currently provide  representative data for 140 million people in India and we are rapidly expanding within and beyond India.

    About the Statistician’s role

    The Statistician will support a large portfolio, across diverse geographies, sectors, and methodologies. The Statistician will primarily work on the design and analysis of  representative sample surveys, working closely with IDinsight’s DoD team, but will have an opportunity to contribute to causal analysis (“impact evaluation”) and data science initiatives. 
    The Statistician will think critically about how to optimize  methodological rigor given our clients’ time, operational, political and budget constraints. The ideal candidate should love having many different types of problems thrown at them, be able to quickly digest and understand the program and evidence objectives, and provide advice and guidance on how best to proceed.
    The Statistician will be an important member of IDinsight’s Research Evaluation and Data (RED) Team. The RED Team is responsible for ensuring that the services we provide to clients are statistically and methodologically sound. In collaboration with the RED Team lead and personnel, the Researcher’s role will include, the following activities:
    Designing and implementing representative sample surveys and other related activities for IDinsight clients in collaboration with project teams. The Statistician will play a key  role along with our client teams in designing and implementing studies for IDinsight clients, including in-person household surveys, secondary analysis of administrative data sets  (like IHDS), strengthening data quality controls , remote surveys, complex estimation techniques (e.g. multiple frames, hierarchical modelling, etc.), and incorporating  recent developments in data science in primary survey design and analysis. ,.
    Ensuring technical rigor of project deliverables. The Statistician will support project teams in drafting and refining technical documents, which include research designs, pre-analysis plans, sample size calculations, data collection instruments, technical reports, and other documents. The Statistician will also be a crucial resource to the country office where he or she is stationed by providing technical expertise on short-term issues that confront project teams.
    Contribute to technical innovations: The  Statistician will work with project teams and external collaborators to contribute to innovation efforts in sampling design (ex: GIS based, prediction approaches to sampling theory), data quality (ex:  machine learning to predict data quality issues), embedded experiments for survey methodology, and analytical techniques (ex: Small area estimation, Bayesian modelling and inference), and other related topics.
    Working with culturally and geographically diverse project teams. The Statistician will work with project teams that can be spread across the globe, from different nationalities and cultures.
    Supporting the technical professional development of staff. The Statistician will prepare and lead training sessions on technical topics (such as sampling design, statistical inference) on a regular basis. He or she will also provide individualised support to staff on their technical professional development.
    Publishing IDinsight studies in academic and policy journals. The Statistician will have the opportunity to co-author publications in academic and policy journals to showcase results from IDinsight studies, based on IDinsight’s client needs and the Statistician’s interest.
    Develop new projects and services. The Statistician will have the opportunity to develop new projects and client relationships in accordance with IDinsight’s values of client-focused and decision-focused research.
    The Statistician will be expected to fulfill these responsibilities and others with professionalism and on strict deadlines. He or she will also be expected to propose, design and implement new initiatives for supporting project teams and increasing the technical rigor of IDinsight’s work.

    About the Financial Planning & Analysis, Manager role

    The FPnA Manager will support IDinsight with project and regional budgeting, forecasting, value-added analysis and insightful financial reporting.
    This position will report to the Finance Director and will work with the Deputy CFO and other finance colleagues in New Delhi.

    Responsibilities
    Project level

    Oversee the monthly process of updating the monthly budget vs. actual reports and sharing project-level analysis and key takeaways with each project team on a monthly basis. This will include holding calls on a quarterly basis, or more frequently, as warranted
    Suggest and implement improvements to the monthly project reporting tools and process
    Develop and maintain dashboard to be used globally for evaluation of all projects, share meaningful insights with the regions and follow-up on the action plan agreed.
    Give input into policies and guidelines for project reporting, charging, and evaluation, and ongoing forecasting
    Work deeply with teams to update pipeline and contract opportunities in the datahub, ensuring the annual revenue is correct
    Prepare ad hoc reports for project teams and funders with inputs from Finance Director

    Regional level

    Provide BVA analysis, commentary, and other analysis to leads of revenue-generating units on monthly dashboards
    Assist regional teams in updating project pipeline with revenue projections.
    Work with region to interpret utilization tracker and identify key takeaways for regions and for project managers
    Create project profitability analysis across the portfolio
    Prepare and update regional cash forecast for each regional office and as an input into global reporting
    Helping the regions understand which opportunities are self-funded and analyze the related utilization
    Prepare presentations for leadership of revenue-generating units and create additional value-added financial reporting and tracking
    Prepare routine reporting on contribution revenue, restrictions and receivables. Work in sync with the accounting team to ensure accurate reporting on contribution revenue and restrictions.
    Update specific sections in quarterly Board Excel Package, including project pipeline and dashboard

    ERP Transition

    Lead the reporting from the newly implemented ERP from the Project Life cycle perspective
    Work with regional and internal finance and accounts team to ensure accuracy, completeness and appropriateness of data from a reporting perspective
    Work with systems analysts and ERP consultants to ensure reporting requirements are correctly built out in the ERP
    Train internal project teams on extracting and drawing meaningful analysis from reports in the new ERP
    Document processes and SOPs for FPnA and prepare budget and revenue recognition guidelines based on the new system

    Project and Regional Budgeting & Forecasting

    Guide the Senior Associates to support project teams with tools, analysis and guidance in areas such as project budget preparation, contract negotiations, and billing rate analysis
    Review project budgets after first level review by the Senior Associates – FPnA
    Support the revenue-generating units in annual budget and forecasting processes. This may include coordinating budget processes and supporting leadership in creating their budget. It may also include coordinating the project pipeline and staffing forecasts, and cash forecasting.

    Revenue and Receivables

    Create infrastructure to ensure correct billing of, and accrual for, all client revenues
    Ensure collection of all outstanding accounts receivable (external and intercompany) alongside the AR team
    Support Accounting team in preparing monthly, quarterly and annual reporting, and reconcile to management reporting and dashboards

    Other

    Manage ERP system maintenance from Project life cycle perspective along with System administrator, including setting up new projects and team members
    Act as backup for other finance functions
    Support other global financial and related tasks as and when required
    Lead or support other workstreams in finance as needed, which may include areas such as oversight of cash forecasting and investment management, Finance operations, Compliance related functions, and Treasury
    Review revenue recognition for client projects and ensure the amount recorded reflects the progress towards completion of the projects.
    Coordinate with Legal and Operations on matters of governance, compliance, and organization policy.
    Support the monthly closing and annual audit processes as necessary.
    Coordinate across all finance functions and with other Global support functions and regions, on projects and processes that span across the organization.

    Qualifications

    5+ years of work experience in finance, with varied experience that covers all or most of the following: Financial Planning including budgeting and forecasting, Financial Reporting and Dashboards, Accounting in a multi-entity environment, Internal Controls, and Treasury
    Significant leadership experience in the finance function
    Experience in the social sector and a project-based environment both highly desirable
    Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or other relevant areas required. Master’s degree in related areas is helpful but not required.
    Professional accounting qualification – CPA/ACA/ACCA part II or equivalent, preferred.

    The RED Team is the nerve center behind IDinsight’s mission to conduct high-quality, technically accurate, rigorous, ethical, and transparent work. RED Team members are the sectoral specialists and methodological experts on client engagements. And it takes the lead on some of the most technically complex client engagements, such as the data science, data engineering and monitoring systems work. It is responsible for setting the technical standards and producing and maintaining the technical resources of the organization, while ensuring the technical professional development of all IDinsight staff.

    To support RED Team leadership, the Operations Sr. Associate’s / Manager’s responsibilities will include:

    Drive forward the RED Team Strategy
    Help determine skills strengths and gaps on the RED Team as a whole
    Drive recruitment processes for key hires on a rapidly growing team
    Staff RED Team members on projects

    Assign RED team members to projects based on specialization and capacity
    Track members’ allocation and utilization 

    Facilitate knowledge/information management across RED Team and organization
    Assist DSEM team with client development of high impact potential projects including coordination with regional teams across IDinsight
    Help budget leads track team finances
    Support the agenda-setting for weekly team meetings and annual retreats
    Serve as the Ethics Review Committee Coordinator
    Track project teams’ IRB and ethics review status
    Track project publication status
    Maintain the IDinsight public data repository, and supporting teams on publishing data to the repository
    Assist the RED Team Director and DSEM Director with executing other important and time sensitive work streams as they arise.
    This role will report directly to the RED Team Director and will interact regularly with the DSEM Directors and RED Team Operations. While being housed in the RED team, this position will also regularly interact with the IDinsight Global Operations team as well with the Chiefs of Staff of other IDinsight teams. 

    Qualifications
    An ideal RED Team Operations Sr. Associate / Manager must: 

    Effectively manage complex strategic projects and operations from start to finish
    Be proactive and organized
    Have attention for detail, while being able to zoom out and understand the big picture
    Be excited to create and deploy high-impact internal systems

    About the Role

    We are seeking candidates with strong data science skills and a passion for building solutions to difficult social problems. Most importantly, successful candidates should possess the ability to work independently to solve complex challenges related to both human and technological.

    As a senior data scientist, you’ll also be across multiple projects and bring technical expertise to the team. In addition to the tasks above, you’ll be:

    Working with clients to understand their needs: Understanding their current processes and pain points and identifying which of these can be framed as a tractable data science problem.
    Providing technical oversight on multiple projects.
    Designing, testing, and improving various algorithms: From OOTB sci-kit-learn algorithms to bespoke ones.
    Writing articles and blog posts to share our work for technical and non-technical audiences.
    Synthesizing, visualizing, and communicating results: Dashboards, plots, interactive viz, presentations, and reports
    Writing test cases, setting up CI/CD, and deploying solutions using cloud resources.
    Ensuring business problems are framed correctly: Not everything is a data science problem, and a senior data scientist would have the expertise to make this judgment.
    Ensuring appropriate methods are being used to tackle the problem: Having a broad knowledge of methods would allow a senior data scientist to pick the one best suited for the task.
    Establishing standards and best practices: The senior data scientist will bring experience in writing quality code and project management best practices.
    Doing code reviews: Every piece of code we write should be reviewed. Senior data scientists would often be a reviewer and also establish best practices for reviews.
    Provide mentorship to junior data scientists.
    Provide expertise in one or more of the following:
    Deep-learning: image classification/segmentation, sequence models
    Optimization under constraints: linear programming, evolutionary algorithms
    NLP: sentiment analysis, text summarization
    Other: performance tracking, online learning, contextual bandits, survival analysis

    Required Technical Qualifications

    Intermediate to advanced Python skills. Please do not apply if you are not an expert in standard data science packages in Python (numpy, pandas, scikit learn, etc.).
    Hands-on experience building and deploying supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms in production.Degree in Applied Math, Data Science, Computer Science, Physics, or a Similar Technical Field.
    Strong foundations in statistics and probability.
    Minimum 4 years experience working as a data scientist in Python or R.
    Experience with version control and code management in Git.
    Knowledge of good software engineering principles.

    IDinsight’s next CEO:
