    Job Description

    The Associate Director in the Legal Strategies, Innovation and Research unit works with staff across the Center to ensure technical excellence and coherency in the Centre’s strategic litigation, innovation in legal strategies and research. The Associate Director will collaborate closely with the Center’s regional units on developing litigation strategies to build norms on sexual and reproductive health and rights and hold states accountable for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) violations. The Associate Director will also help facilitate the development of institutional legal principles on key SRHR issues; pioneer new legal theories on SRHR protections under international and regional human rights laws; and contribute to thought leadership on new and emerging issues.

    The ideal candidate for this role will be a skilled human rights litigator with demonstrated senior level expertise working globally within multiple legal systems, extensive experience working in UN and/or regional human rights bodies and expertise on reproductive rights, gender justice, and/or health rights. Candidates must have significant experience developing and pursuing cases before regional and/or United Nations human rights bodies and working across several legal systems or regions.

    Contingent on compliance with local labor laws, this position can be based in any of the Center’s offices or be fully remote.

    Fluency In Spanish Or Other Languages Is a Plus.

    The role will be based in a Center office (NYC, Washington D.C., Bogota, Geneva, or Nairobi). Covid-19 vaccination is required for all US-based employees of the Center.

    Primary Responsibilities

    Working closely with the Senior Director of Global Legal Strategies, this person will:

    Provide technical support to regional teams in the development of legal strategies and new legal theories for defensive and proactive litigation.
    Scope potential new innovations in how the Center enhances legal accountability for reproductive rights violations, including the exploration of legal mechanisms beyond UN and regional human rights systems.
    Facilitate the development, dissemination, and integration/alignment with Center-wide positions on key and emerging legal issues through collaborative and participatory processes involving staff from across the globe.
    Stay up to date with reproductive rights litigation and human rights litigation with high impact in the field of reproductive rights, as well as relevant emerging reproductive rights issues; identify opportunities for the Center to contribute to the development of emerging legal norms.
    Identify opportunities to enhance internal knowledge and skills on litigation and facilitate opportunities for staff to share best practices and lessons learned.
    Represent the Center externally, including with key partners, donors, media, academic and professional audiences. 

    Qualifications

    A degree in law
    At least 12 years of relevant work experience, including extensive litigation experience particularly before international and/or regional human rights bodies and within or across several legal systems.
    Demonstrated senior level expertise working globally with international organisations across multiple legal systems; developing impact litigation, including conceptualizing cases, developing strong evidence bases, working directly with clients, drafting legal filings, and implementing impact litigation decisions/outcomes.
    Experience working on human rights/women’s rights, reproductive rights and/or in the social justice sector
    A track record of working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to achieve common goals
    A demonstrated ability to adapt to change and manage and prioritize a diverse workload;

    The Role:

    The Director of Compliance is a critical member of the Center’s Office of the General Counsel (OGC). The Director of Compliance is also a leader within the Center’s cross-departmental team that oversees all aspects of the Center’s grants process, from solicitations to award implementation, partnerships, and program monitoring.
    The Director of Compliance will have two overarching responsibilities. First, the Director of Compliance will contribute to the work of the OGC to ensure that Center staff across the organization meet or exceed their obligations under applicable laws, Center policies, and industry best practices. The Director of Compliance will help create and strengthen Center policies and processes, conduct trainings for Center staff and partners, and develop methods for monitoring and auditing compliance.
    Second, the Director of Compliance will be chiefly responsible for the Center’s compliance with donors’ rules and regulations. The Director of Compliance will provide support and guidance to Center staff and partners regarding donor-related obligations. Among other things, the Director of Compliance will contribute to prospective donor analyses and assessments, conduct due diligence in response to donor requirements or requests, and create systems, tools and processes to ensure compliance with donor rules and regulations at every stage of the award lifecycle.
    The Director of Compliance will further take on special project and assignments as requested by the General Counsel.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    Center Compliance Generally

    Contribute to the work of the OGC to ensure that the Center and its staff meet or exceed obligations under applicable laws, Center policies and industry best practices.
    Create and strengthen Center policies and procedures, especially those relevant to grant eligibility and compliance.

    Primary Responsibilities: 

     Assist in conceptualizing, designing, and implementing a pro bono agenda to expand and deepen the network of pro bono law firms and attorneys in Africa.
     Lead the recruitment and management of the Africa regional pro bono and advocacy network through cultivation meetings, Center presentations, and collaboration with Center staff [ specify relevant units].
     In collaboration with the pro bono team, manage the referral of pro bono projects, including the facilitation of the pro bono relationship with the Center liaison for the project.

    Qualifications:

    Qualifications:

    Provide leadership to increase program coordination, collaboration, communication and harmonization of programming with the broader Global Legal Program.

    Oversee tracking of program implementation and facilitate coordination within the program and across other regions and departments.
     Facilitate close and efficient coordination of Africa program support to the partners in the focal countries and with headquarters’ departments on common programming, operational and funding issues.

    Portfolio Management & Program Quality:

    Work closely with the GLP Operations to strengthen program management across the unit, including building program and project management capacities in the Africa region and disseminating learning and best practices.
    Oversee the grant portfolio, ensuring all programs are delivered in line with donor standards and aligned to the Center’s principles, values and strategy.
    Manage the region’s relationships with the Technical Units and support collaboration to optimize impact on program quality within and across the Africa program.
    Facilitate sharing and learning across the program and support thematic leads to incorporate learning into project design and operations management.  
    Ensure that programs are designed and implemented in support of Center’s vision of cost-effective, outcomes-driven and evidence-based interventions that are responsive to the local context and the priorities of our beneficiaries.
    Ensure implementation of, and adherence to the Center’s and donor policies relevant to the Africa program in coordination with the Compliance Unit and Office of the General Counsel.
    Drive/Establish/strengthen processes, develop structures and provide technical guidance on project cycle / grant management for Africa including sub-grant management and partnership.

    Business Development & Partnerships:

    Play key role in new efforts to secure especially government funding for the Africa program and to integrate related systems and processes into the region’s operations.
    Oversee and support proposal development and writing processes and ensure timely submission of competitive, responsive and high-quality proposals that align with Center priorities.
    With Snr Regional Director oversee a rolling program of process and systems changes as required to support the Center’s ability to secure, manage, and sustain funding (WOW1)

    Qualifications:

    15+ years of professional experience with several of these being in an international NGO senior program management.
    Master’s degree in relevant field preferred. 
    Experience in managing staff required.
    Significant program and project management experience with ability to work proactively and independently while facilitating teams to develop collaborative processes.
    Experience in dealing with large, restricted grants required especially specialized budgeting and attendant office administrative requirements.
    Ability to draft and effectively copy edit written communication such as memos, talking points, presentations, and emails and have an ability to translate technical information for lay audiences.

    Finance Manager

    The Role: Reporting to the Head of Program Operations, Africa Region, this role is responsible for ensuring prudent financial management and controls for the Regions operations. A key accountability of the role involves establishing budgetary, financial and procurement policies, procedures and systems to ensure integrity, timely service delivery and value for money in line with the Centre for Reproductive Rights Financial and operations requirements as per the strategic plan.
    Primary Responsibilities: 
    Finance Operations

    Ensure the implementation of Centre for Reproductive Right’s internal controls, finance policies, systems and procedures conform to the minimum and mandatory financial standards
    Ensure adherence with local statutory financial compliance requirements, including vendor tax withholdings, tax filings, etc.
    Undertake and monitor all payments, including to partner organizations, and ensure smooth, timely issuing of payments and that all financial transactions in the region including of projects, are in line and comply with Centre for Reproductive Right’s policies and within the regional authorization limits.
    Manage and meet all financial reporting deadlines required by local agencies, including working with the outsourced payroll provider to ensure returns to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA); National Social Security Fund, National Hospital Insurance Fund are accurate, and submissions done and entered in Centre for Reproductive Rights books/records.
    Overall assistance with adherence to local statutory compliance requirements, including vendor tax withholdings, annual tax filings, etc.
    In coordination with the International Accountant, prepare reports for Center’s annual Internal Audit process.
    Support the Sr. Operations Manager to track and monitor spending related to the Center’s office budget, reviewing budgeted to actual expenditures monthly to ensure that spending is in line with budget allocations.
    Serve as the primary liaison with the local accounting firm, on matters related to annual compliance obligations and tax filing requirements.
    Ensure annual audit reports are prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) or Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
    Banking and Managing the Center’s bank accounts with the support from Snr Regional Director
    On a monthly basis, providing the bank with documentation in support of incoming transfers and inter account transfer for foreign currency in compliance with Central Bank of Kenya Requirements
    Undertake verification exercise of all projects financial transactions to ensure completeness and accuracy.
    Prepare office monthly cashbooks and bank reconciliations and update in the computerized accounting software.
    Support in payment of invoices and bills from suppliers and service providers including payroll and related statutory payments when required to.
    Support in preparation of annual and project audits.
    Monitor grants transaction to make sure the organization is in compliance with donor requirements

    Program Finance

    Support the Head of Program Operations to deliver on the annual budget projection process and quarterly reforecasts.

    Support in project monitoring exercises and undertake partner risk pre-assessments and grant start-up meetings.
    Undertake partner financial, compliance and/or operational audits as requested and share such results/recommendations
    Support partners in preparation and review of their budget revision requests costed work plans and cash flow projections
    Prepare project funds requests for review and approval by the Head of Prog Operations and Sr. Regional Director
    Facilitate timely grant processing to partners and subsequent disbursements, regularly updating the project on disbursement status.

    The Role:
    The Deputy Director, Global Legal Program (GLP) reports to the Senior Vice President, GLP (SVP) and is responsible for ensuring smooth implementation of GLP’s programs, providing program guidance, supervising GLP senior management staff, and providing oversight of substantial program and financial management. Working closely with the SVP, Regional Directors (RDs), Director of Legal Strategies and Global Operations, the deputy director ensures the smooth operation of the GLPs key day-to-day functions.
    Along with the SVP, the incumbent is accountable for the achievement of all key programmatic goals and objectives. They are responsible and accountable for the development, communication and execution of strategies, as well as resource mobilization to ensure successful delivery and sustainability of the mandate of the Center in the regions.

    Support and mentor the regional directors in fostering positive, strategic and effective collaborations with NGOs, policy makers, private-sector lawyers, and other strategic partners in their regions to achieve impact.

    Resource Development

    Work closely with the SVP, GLP, Development and SEAL to establish and support organizational fundraising goals in the regions.
    Support the regional directors in the successful cultivation and partnerships with government donors, foundations and other development partners in the regions.

    Qualifications:

    Proven track record as a member of senior management and demonstrable experience in senior program management and programmatic leadership across geographies in the field of human rights, women’s rights, social justice, or a related field preferably with an international organization;
    At least 12 years of experience in program and operations management, including leading initiatives to empower senior managers to develop innovative strategies and build sustainable programs;
    Demonstrated track record in business development and in identifying and nurturing strategic partnerships;
    Proven track record in resource mobilization and in cultivating and sustaining donor relations and experience with major donors’ processes, including demonstrated track record in program design and funding proposal development;

    Operations Associate

    The Role:

    The Operations Associate will provide clerical and program support to the Center’s Africa team. This individual will report to the Senior Operations and Office Manager for Africa.

    This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    The primary responsibilities for the Operations Associate will be, but are not limited to, the following:

    Provide Clerical Support for the Africa Team

    Serve as the point person for copying, scanning and distribution of documents, conference room scheduling, the help desk, and filing documents among other responsibilities
    Work with the the Senior Operations and Office Manager to build vendor relationships and process service contracts
    Process travel or operations advances and service payment request forms

    Office Management

    Support the Senior Operations and Office Manager in facility management
    Liaise with building management on parking, cleaning of common areas, and granting security access to visiting guests or staff

    General Administrative Management

    Provide the Senior Regional Director (SRD) with administrative support including calendar maintenance and scheduling meetings, handling travel arrangements, and processing advances/reimbursement
    Greet guests, draft and mail correspondence, sign for packages and mails, and run the office switchboard
    Assist in the orientation of new staff, interns, research fellows and consultants through scheduling meetings with relevant staff and printing out orientation packs
    Assist with printing and logistical preparations for submitting materials to the courts in Kenya
    Organize the purchase of kitchen supplies, provide refreshments for external guests for in house meetings and assisting in other administrative tasks as needed
    Act as the point of contact during the absence of team members by responding to urgent correspondence and addressing urgent issues with appropriate staff

    Inventory Management

    Update and maintain stock levels for publications and supplies
    Update assets list on Asset Panda
    Organize the office storage room and publications

     Logistical Coordination

    Serve as the logistics coordinator for external trainings and convenings with partners within Kenya, Africa, and across the globe, including arranging travel, visas, accommodations, meals, and facilities rentals
    Liaise directly with attendees and prepare workshop materials
    Support credit card expense reporting for select team members and events
    Prepare program payment request forms and manage online payments for program expenses
    Serve as the point person for program vendors to ensure that contracts, local purchase orders, and invoices are accurate

    Qualifications:

    University Degree in relevant field
    2+ years of relevant work experience in an administrative position
    Fluency in English (speaking, reading, and writing)
    Willingness to be hands-on and develop knowledge of operations
    Demonstrated commitment to the mission
    Ability to handle and keep confidential matters appropriately
    Excellent written and verbal communications skills
    Flexibility and ability to work professionally in a fast-paced environment
    Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Outlook, and the Internet
    Excellent interpersonal skills
    Self-motivation and the ability to work independently, while also collaborating in a team setting
    The ability to complete assignments in a timely manner, often under considerable time pressure, and to manage multiple projects simultaneously
    Commitment to human rights, reproductive rights, and/or women’s rights generally
    Capacity to receive and accept constructive feedback
    Exceptional organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail, accuracy, and pacing
