Minimum 2-year commitment, full-time job
Job Description
One Acre Fund is growing quickly, and we plan to at least quadruple our farmer impact in the next five years. Our staff play a major role in driving that growth while adding major innovations and improvements to our program quality. This offers staff members a strong career opportunity: the ability to learn from a successful field operation, contribute to aggressive growth, and also make improvements to our program.
We are currently seeking an Agronomist to join the Product Innovations team in Kenya. This team works to discover new ideas for our programs and conducts dozens of trials to test them. We have a broad research portfolio, but the majority of our trials focus on new ways to boost yields and agricultural productivity for smallholder farmers. We conduct a large number of experimental trials each season, including over one hundred trials at five research stations spread across Kenya. We are continually looking for new ways to bring cutting-edge agricultural technologies and improved methods to the more than 200,000 smallholder farmers we serve.
The Agronomist role would include the following primary responsibilities:
Conducting early stage agricultural research on new innovations: conducting literature reviews, continually tracking agricultural research developments globally, and preparing memos to synthesize knowledge and inform trial and program decisions.
Managing all research station trials: identifying research priorities, developing trial strategies each season, and managing multiple teams across five research stations conducting experimental trials in Kenya
Building and managing relationships with experts: reaching out to other experts at universities and research institutions to help guide our agricultural research strategy and ensure we are pursuing the most promising innovations.
Providing technical inputs and guidance: serving as a major source of technical knowledge about agriculture to help inform key decisions for the Product Innovations department and the Kenya country program more broadly.
Staff mentorship: supporting all staff members working on agricultural trials to develop their technical knowledge, research and data analysis capacity, and leadership and management skills.
Career Growth and Development
One Acre Fund invests in building management and leadership skills. Your manager and a global support team will commit significant time in your career development. We provide constant, actionable feedback delivered through mentorship and through regular management consulting-style career reviews. We also have regular one-on-one meetings, where we listen to and discuss career goals, and work collaboratively to craft roles that each person can be passionate about. Because of our rapid growth, we constantly have new high-level roles opening up and opportunities in many functions.
Qualifications
We are seeking an exceptional professional with 2+ years of work experience and ideally a demonstrated passion for international development. Candidates who fit the following criteria are strongly encouraged to apply:
Advanced academic training in an agricultural field such as soil science, with a PhD and previous field trial experience in a smallholder farming context strongly preferred.
Strong work experiences. Examples include a demanding professional work experience, or successful entrepreneurial experience, e.g. starting a field program in a developing country, leading a conference, starting a business, solid Volunteer Service Organization accomplishments (VSO, Peace Corps, JICA, etc).
Advanced data analysis knowledge, with training in statistics and experience working with R strongly preferred.
Leadership experience at work, or outside of work.
Top-performing undergraduate background (include final grade/marks/GPA).
Humility. We are looking for passionate professionals who combine strong leadership skills with good humor, patience, and a humble approach to service to join our growing family of leaders.
A willingness to commit to living in rural areas of East Africa for at least two years – this is a long-term, career-track role. The ideal candidate will have at least one year demonstrated experience working in the developing world, although this is not a strict requirement.

Kakamega, Kenya; Rubengera, Rwanda; Muramvya, Burundi; Iringa, Tanzania.
*Note: Please indicate your country of preference in your cover letter.
DurationMinimum 3 years commitment, full-time job.
Job Description
Rapid organization growth translates into great career opportunities for our staff. We invest heavily in careers – we want to develop our next group of country directors, R&D directors, and partnership leaders. Example projects include:
Program associate management: Program managers directly manage 1-3 program associates and 10-100 local staff. Managers invest in the growth of their direct reports through frequent project feedback, skills-building and mentorship.
Government partnerships development: One Acre Fund receives frequent requests from African governments to jointly implement nationwide agricultural training, fertilizer distribution programs, and credit programs. A program manager took the lead in setting up our newest government partnership operation, initially to pilot one project. Within a year, this operation had fifty staff and is likely to at least quadruple in the coming two years, to hopefully 2-3 nationwide partnerships.
Sweet potato vine production: One Acre Fund farmers needed high-quality sweet potato vines in the 2013 season to avoid crop loss due to a maize disease. When these vines were unavailable in the quantity necessary, a program manager started a sweet potato multiplication farm to ensure all farmers received quality inputs on time. This included designing farm operations, hiring staff, negotiating contracts, coordinating logistics and managing more than 600 seasonal employees.
Department leadership opportunities: In their second year of service, top performing program staffers are often given the responsibility of running an internal One Acre Fund department like “Scale Innovations.” This department runs dozens of test-and-control trials with 10,000+ farmers that radically tweak our program model, with the goal of significantly increasing our scalability.
New markets: One Acre Fund has ambitious plans to launch one new country per year. In 2011, a program manager moved to Burundi to direct field operations for an initial 400-farmer pilot. Three years later, One Acre Fund’s Burundi operation serves 21,000 farmers with 110 staff.
This is a career-track role that is intended to eventually transition into a role such as country director, innovation director, etc. This is also a role that is eventually tracked to transition to “general partner,” the core leadership group of One Acre Fund.

One Acre Fund invests in building management and leadership skills. Your manager will invest significant time in your career development. Organization Description
More than 75% of the world’s poor are smallholder farmers, representing the largest and most uniform group of poor people in the world. Serving farmers in Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania, One Acre Fund is a growing social enterprise that is innovating a new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, One Acre Fund invests in rural families to generate a permanent gain in income. We are growing quickly. Since 2006, we have grown to serve 400,000 farm families with more than 3,000 full-time field staff and we will serve 1 million farmers by 2020.
Team and Job Description
The mission of the Impact Venture team is to dream up, trial, and scale new businesses to create positive impact for rural families. We invest in “moon shots” and other ambitious ideas to rapidly create impact for tens of millions of families. Examples of new businesses include:
Retail Chains – we set up a chain of retail stores to sell impactful products to rural families. Retail fronts are a traditional, but effective means for marketing and selling goods to key populations of people.
Seed Technology – improved seed varieties provide rural households with better returns than just about any other technology. We are running large scale, innovative marketing campaigns at the regional level to raise adoption of the best available seeds on the market. We are also investing in supply side opportunities to increase the quantity of seeds available to farmers.
Government Services – we are partners with local, regional and national governments to improve the quality and impact of government services for rural families. These partnerships allow us to help deliver critical information and services to hundreds of thousands of families.
Product Design – we are designing, prototyping, trialing, and producing new products for rural families. Initial categories of products include agricultural tools and household utility products.
We are seeking exceptional individuals to join this early-stage team to help us scale early stage ventures and dream up new opportunities. In general, team members focus on a single business at a time. We try to match team members with their passions as best as possible. Responsibilities for qualified candidates will include:
Direct Trials and Support Rapid Scale to a Regional or National level. New team members are expected to own key operational functions and run trials to test key questions to help us create businesses which can generate significant impact and grow at a rapid pace. Example projects include:
– an Associate on the Impact Venture team opened a series of stores in rural communities to sell key goods and services. The Associate hired and managed a growing team to run the operation, developed operational strategies to select store locations and organize store operations, and worked with global teams to develop inventory and cash tracking processes.
– a Manager hired a team of 75 people to run a series of marketing trials to promote use of improved seed. Improved seed is proven to significantly increase yields at very little added cost. The Manager designed our messaging strategy and marketing materials and established partnerships with dozens of local private businesses to increase sales of improved seed in communities with very low adoption levels.
– an Associate is running trials to test the efficacy of different mobile tools, from two-way SMS to IVR to mobile games. Our goal is to use these mobile tools to support our different business units to communicate with existing and prospective clients.
Dream Big and Operationlize New Ideas – identify innovations to enhance new business units and contribute to organizational strategy in identifying new opportunities to pursue. Team members are expected to prioritize new ideas and figure out how to translate the best ideas into live trials and operations.
Build and Manage a Team – hire, develop, and lead a team to effectively execute in the field. To grow fast, Associate and Managers need to be capable of hiring and leading large teams in short periods of time.
Coordinate with External Partners – manage relationships with key partners who are relevant to our work. Partners could include executives at seed companies, representatives from solar companies, key officials in government ministries, etc.

OPERATIONS ASSOCIATE/MANAGER PROGRAM ASSOCIATE
Job Location
Kakamega, Kenya (English required)
Job Description
One Acre Fund’s Kenya program grows in scope and complexity each year. We add new products, services, and input distributions; new ways of collecting repayment and enrolling clients; and new policies and procedures to incentivize and enforce good performance. Our program size roughly triples every two years.
The Operations Division – a collection of back-office functions including Logistics, Customer Engagement, Orders, Collections, Print, and Internal Investigations – works to (re)design and execute the processes necessary to keep up with program change, growth, and innovation. We live on the edge of what’s possible, and accept significant executional risk and technical debt to increase the total amount of social good that we produce, through more impact per client and more total clients. The result is a fast-paced, constantly evolving and growing work environment. We seek individuals who are excited by BIG challenges and comfortable building structure where we haven’t yet placed it.
We place a heavy emphasis on both execution and staff growth and development. We strive to create a safe learning environment that is forgiving of internal mistakes, with safety mechanisms to catch any errors before they ripple outside of our division. Simultaneously, we offer stretch-projects to all staff because we believe that growth comes through practice. We seek team members who are eager to embrace both of these important priorities.
As the Kenya Operations Associate/Manager, your duties will include:
Supporting one or more teams within the operations division.
Mentoring and developing key team leaders.
Working closely with our Field Program and Innovations teams to support program impact assessments – For each proposed programmatic change, what existing processes will shift and what additional short and long-term support is needed.
Managing operations projects – Some examples include:
Identifying, codifying, and documenting mature processes – How we execute the routine stuff to run our program, like servicing product warranties, allocating field staff to operational geographies, disbursing refunds, issuing client repayment incentives, etc. etc. etc.
Formalizing QC processes and checklists to deskill our entry-level roles.
Supporting the development and maintenance of a simple country-wide “Service Catalog” that outlines the services each One Acre Fund team offers.
Managing operations innovations – some examples include:
Migrating existing paper processes to tablets, speeding the flow of data from field to office and back.
Professionalizing our Customer Service team’s call routing, call volume projections, case tracking, and associated reporting.
Preparing for “rolling” program enrollment and deliveries if and as we move away from a highly seasonal program.
Building bridges between our Field Program leadership and our back-office.
Humbly and cheerfully doing whatever unexpected work is necessary to keep the ship afloat and strengthen it against future unexpected icebergs.

Job Description
We are looking for a Strategy & Operations Analyst to work on short-term projects across functions to rapidly solve problems and drive key initiatives forward. This is a full-time career-track role within One Acre Fund Rwanda’s Strategy Unit. The role therefore includes exposure to high level strategy, working in a variety of departments and functions, and getting into the field.
The ideal candidate is eager to learn and question, balancing keeping an open mind with “getting stuff done.” While the best part of the role is that no day will be the same, the role is structured as follows:

by analyzing costs and processes to ensure we have critical inputs for farmers
by working with our Field team to revamp performance and incentives
Ongoing initiatives and quick projects: The remaining 20-30% of the Strategy & Operations Analyst’s time will be managing ongoing initiatives or responding to quick requests from our Country Director. An example of an ongoing project could be planning our quarterly all department leadership meeting (figuring out the agenda, how to make it engaging, and how to communicate a strategy update). A quick request could be conducting research that will go to a partner or external stakeholder.
Longer-term, there will be opportunities to lead increasingly large initiatives or join/lead a department you are supporting.

Data Scientist
WantedExceptional professional with a very strong statistical background to use external and internally-collected data to inform agricultural development decisions.Job LocationNairobi, Kenya or Kigali, RwandaDurationMinimum 2 years commitment, full-time job.Job DescriptionOne Acre Fund has a robust research program spanning all countries of operation including thousands of farmers and well over a hundred agronomic and socioeconomic trials each year. The Data Scientist will be on the Agriculture Research Team, which works directly with each in-country research team (Innovations Teams) to identify new research opportunities and provide technical support where needed. The Data Scientist will be responsible for the following:
Adapting agronomic elements of the program to heterogeneous conditions – The Data Scientist will be responsible for working with internal and external agricultural scientists to analyze field crop yield gap drivers and develop agronomic hypotheses to be tested through on-farm trials. This will involve aggregation of weather, soil, pest and disease, and agronomic data to analyze the magnitude of various sources of yield variation in different areas of program operation. It will also involve coordinating with field teams to collect the data we need and setting and executing analysis plans.
External collaborations and relationship management – We will be working with external partners to develop scalable, data-driven development tools for not only One Acre Fund clients but smallholders outside of our program as well. This may include development of a plant disease visual diagnosis app and using remote sensing to predict maize yields. It may also include working with our in-house MIR spectroscopy lab to improve soil chemical parameter prediction models and directly predict yields from soil spectra. The Data Scientist will be responsible for managing much of the external-facing work related to these initiatives including interfacing with donors and researchers.
Capacity building and advising – We are looking for someone with experience and willingness to teach others and advise on organizational data and analytical decisions. A successful Data Scientist at One Acre Fund will enable and improve the analyses of other analysts both within the Agricultural Research Team and in other departments. This role will serve as a teacher of teachers by building the skills of other analysts who provide analytical support within the organization. Training topics may include questionnaire design and execution, efficient data cleaning, outlier management, model selection and interpretation, and predictive analyses. The Data Scientist will also be responsible for advising on organizational decisions about data systems management.
Exploration – The Agricultural Research Team is an inherently exploratory team; we are tasked with identifying new impact opportunities for in-country research teams (Innovation Teams) to assess and scale. We anticipate that the Data Scientist will take on exploratory analyses, propose new global research programs, change the way that we approach existing analyses, and identify new avenues by which One Acre Fund can deliver data-driven impact to smallholder farmers.

Experience with observational causal inference (e.g. regression adjustment, matching, propensity score stratification), or quasi-experimental methods (e.g., instrumental variables, regression discontinuity, interrupted time series). Knowledge of causal graphical models is a plus.
Experience managing data systems. A successful data scientist candidate can both create efficient data storage systems as well as use them for analyses.
