    The purpose of this assignment.
    This assignment aims to analyse the tea sector setup and specifically to understand the capacities of smallholder farmer’s organisations/groups in addressing market barriers, climate change, and policy issues. The specific objectives include:

    To understand the Tea sector setup and key players in the tea value chain in the mentioned countries
    To Identify smallholders’ organisation structure from the grassroots to the apex levels and understand how they are networked and the level of collaboration with other actors nationally, regionally, and globally on addressing market barriers and policy issues.
    Identify the capacities of existing farmer’s organisations, specifically on the strengths and weaknesses of addressing market barriers and policy issues in both countries.
    Assess smallholders’ organisation Leadership and Governance structure with rapid assessment on inclusion.
    Identify and advise the areas where TT can collaborate/support farmer’s organisations in market barriers, policy, and climate change issues in the countries.

    This consultancy is to assist Transform Trade to:

    To understand the tea sector setup and key players of the tea business in both countries which will inform TT to create contacts and network with them .
    Understand/identify critical stakeholders to engage/collaborate with and areas of support in the value chain for sustainable impact, specifically in market barriers, climate change, and policy issues.
    Understand smallholders’ organisation setup, leadership and Governance structure, and their capacity, strength, and weakness. This information will inform TT on the leadership inclusion, the organizations’ capacity, and areas of support, including in the areas of collective voices in climate change issues, market barriers and policy issues.
    To understand the capacity women and PWD leadership. This information will help TT to provide support that ensure that women and PWD leadership is strengthened. To inform TT about the key market barriers, climate change, and policy issues facing smallholder farmer’s organisations.

    Scope of work.

    Stakeholder consultations, to identify key players in the tea value chain and their role in Kenya and Tanzania.
    Prepare smallholder apex tea organization’s needs assessment and advice on the areas of support /collaboration according to TT strategy.
    In collaboration with farmers, organisations identify the key market barriers, climate change, and policy issues which affect farmers’ tea business.
    Recommend ways of improving farmers’ organisational leadership and Governance and leaders’ capacities for a collective voice for better business returns in the value chain.
    Recommend ways on strengthen inclusion of women and PWD in farmer organization’s leadership
    Prepare a draft framework document that will define the process and guide the preparation of a standard action plan (SAP) on how best farmers’ organisation can identify and mitigates market barriers, climate change and policy issues.

    Expected outputs.

    A document that captures the tea sector structure with critical players in the value chain and their roles in countries.
    Report on smallholder farmers’ organisation leadership and Governance structure, organisation’s capacities, areas of engagement/support, and organization needs.
    Plan on how to strengthen farmer’s organizational leadership and Governance, including a section on strengthening women and PWDs in leadership an
    Brief report on how TT can collaborate/support farmer’s organisations on collective action in addressing market barriers, climate change and policy issues.

     Minimum qualifications and skills required: The service provider must:

    Demonstrate experience in the agriculture sector or Agriculture donor-supported projects in East Africa.
    Have significant experience working with smallholder farmers within East Africa.
    Have working knowledge of the tea sector in East Africa.
    Have strong communications kills in English and Kiswahili.
    Have a strong network in the East Africa Tea sector.

We aim to become a grassroots investor, advocate and intermediary that focuses on trade justice, particularly through producer organizations, empowered workers, and climate and environmental justice. To do this, we will identify relevant partners which are having a positive impact in their community and have great potential to do more. Their work will have a clear link to our portfolios of work. We will listen to them and work towards an agenda which they set. Our role will be to support them build their communities, organizations, enterprises, and the strength of their voices, drawing on our decades of experience in programmatic and advocacy work. We will also focus on gender and climate change to ensure we support gender diverse and excluded communities and improve climate resilience of farmer and artisan communities.

    Purpose of the consultancy assignment The purpose of this consultancy is to support the Traidcraft Exchange new strategy of shifting power to local communities. The specific objective is to identify and establish strategic partnerships, collaborations and effective dialogue in East Africa with smallholder farmers collectives, CSOs, government and private sector, for co-creating effective interventions to support the Traidcraft Exchange implement the new strategy of shifting power in East Africa.
    Key activities and deliverables • To map out existing ecosystems for national and local actors (CSO, Govt, private sectors, producers’ organizations) and assess their capability, strength, gaps and opportunities for collaboration. • Identify change makers among farmer, worker communities/businesses/collectives. • Promote the #ShiftthePower philosophy among all stakeholders on Participatory Grant Making.
    Building a database of individuals /networks /organizations working in this way across Kenya, Tanzania and across East Africa.
    Engage with stakeholders in Kenya and Tanzania understand climate justice issues, best practices and opportunities in both policy and programming.
    Support the scoping of the key issues in the Tea and Small-Scale Agriculture sectors.
    With input from appropriate stakeholders, develop a framework for a prioritized list of strategic partnerships for TX in EA (starting with Kenya).
    Develop a partnership management system that ensures we continually capture knowledge about our working and strategic partners (e.g., organization charts, current projects, our understanding of their goals). Support dialogue with community organizations/businesses
    Provide accompaniment support to farmers organizations as needed through a participatory process, supporting the organizations to understand their issues better, support inclusive working, help the business take decisions on what needs to change (providing necessary information that may be needed).
    Support the process of evidencing and documenting the processes and successes for the pilot on TX new strategy.
    Timeframe This is a parttime consultancy and is expected to last for 4 months and shall commence on or about 15th May 2022, shall be completed on or before 30th September 2022.

    You will have 

    Experience of developing innovative partnerships, process design and implementation in a multi- sectoral context.
    Experience and understanding of sustainable trade issues.
    Experience in using participatory approaches and methodologies, including participatory grant making.
    A drive to develop a good understanding of participatory, #ShiftthePower approaches, and community philanthropy.
    Good communication and rapport development skill.
    Good in speaking and writing skills in English and Kiswahili.
    Willingness to travel in Kenya or Tanzania.
    A bachelor’s degree in social sciences/ development studies/business management/other relevant fields.

    About the role
    The Partnerships and Investment team have joint accountability to raise funds and build partnerships in the UK and internationally for newly defined portfolios of work and raise match funding for large multi-year development programmes. The team manage resourcing from trusts and foundations, statutory donors, high net worth individuals, companies, and social enterprises. Although the post-holder will focus largely on foundations, statutory and trust funding the postholder needs to be versatile and able to engage with partners and donors at all levels with a willingness to fundraise across a wide range of disciplines where the need arises.

    Complete compelling partnership proposals and presentations in line with the organisational strategy
    Ability to develop and work with technical proposals and complex project budgets

    Contribute to the leadership and co-ordination of the Partnerships and Investment team and support colleagues to reach agreed personal and team targets

    Purpose and Objectives of this assignment
    The purpose of this consultancy is to provide support in the finance function of the organisation.
    Responsibilities
    The consultant will perform the following duties.

    Assist project staff in budgets preparations and budget monitoring.
    Ensure that all float/payment request submitted to finance are accurate according to project standard and policy and that they are paid on time.
    Undertake verification exercise of all project financials transactions to ensure completeness and accuracy.
    Prepare office monthly cashbooks and bank reconciliations and update in the computerised accounting software.
    Prepare donor financial reports as per the reporting requirements and budget vs actual reports for the monitoring.
    Support in project monitoring exercises.
    Support in payment of invoices and bills from suppliers and service providers including payroll and related statutory payments when required to.
    Support in preparation of annual and project audits.
    Update documents in the organisation document management platform-SharePoint.
    Any other duties as assigned from time to time.
    4. Timeline
    This consultancy is expected to last for 8 months and shall commence on 1st June 2021 and shall be completed on 31st January 2022.
    5. Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration and CPA II Or CPA finalist and ongoing degree in Accounting.

    Understanding and experience working in the development/charity sector.

    three-year project titled, Sustainable Agriculture & Women’s Advancement: Improving Livelihoods and Establishing Women led Enterprises with Smallholder Farmers in Meru County Kenya (SAWA).
    The project is in the second year and Traidcraft Exchange plans to undertake an **Environmental
    Impact Assessment (EAI) **along the target vegetable value chains in Buuri sub-county in Meru County. The project is promoting adoption of various sustainable agricultural practices among target beneficiaries who are mainly smallholder vegetable farmers and therefore the project seeks to understand how these practices impact the environment within the target project area. This Terms of References is intended to guide the consultant and all who will be involved in the assessment.
    Personal Specification:
    You will be:
    Responsible for designing the entire study, development of questionnaires, conducting primary and secondary data collection, data management and report writing.
    You will have:

    Degree or advanced degree in environmental engineering, environmental science, environmental studies or some other science discipline
    Experience and practical knowledge of the sector
    Experience being engaged in organizations or projects involved in environment and climate related initiatives

    Introduction
    Traidcraft Exchange (TX) in partnership with Farm Concern International is implementing a three-year project titled, Sustainable Agriculture & Women’s Advancement: Improving Livelihoods and Establishing Women led Enterprises with Smallholder Farmers in Meru County Kenya (SAWA).
    The project is in the first year and Traidcraft plans to undertake a detailed gender analysis of target vegetable value chains to further identify barriers, opportunities and solutions to engaging women in active decision making at all levels. Traidcraft also plans to train project staff on gender mainstreaming focusing on gender sensitization and practices that effectively engage with women and men to help achieve the outcomes and objectives of the project. This Terms of References is intended to guide the consultant and all who will be involved in analysis and staff training.
    The Project
    Sustainable Agriculture & Women’s Advancement (SAWA) Project is a three-year project (September 2018- August 2021) being implemented by Traidcraft Exchange in partnership with Farm Concern International in Meru with funding from UK government, as well as donations from individuals in UK. The project aims to improve the sustainable livelihoods of 2120 smallholder farmers in Meru, Kenya. SAWA project will economically empower and improve the sustainable livelihoods of 1590 women and 530 men smallholder vegetable farmers in Buuri sub-county, Meru, Kenya. There will be a 50% increase in annual net income from sales of targeted crops. SAWA will adapt the Commercial Village Model to promote women’s entrepreneurship through collective organization, improved business skills and links with private sector and government stakeholders. The project is expected to deliver the following:
    Impact: Reduced household poverty and sustainable livelihoods for smallholder horticulture farmers, particularly women in Meru County, Kenya.
    Outcome: Improved economic empowerment and sustainable livelihoods of 1,590 women (30% from Female Headed Households and 70% from Male Headed Households) and 530 men smallholder vegetable farmers in Timau, Kisima, Kirua and Ruiri wards of Buuri sub-county, Meru County, Kenya.
    The project expected outputs include:

    Output 1: 2120 smallholder vegetable farmers are better organized and work collectively to access markets efficiently.
    Output 2: 2120 smallholder vegetable farmers demonstrate improved production through adoption of sustainable agricultural practices.
    Output 3: 1,590 women smallholders participating in vegetable value chains have increased influence in decision-making through participation, engagement and leadership.
    Output 4: 2120 smallholder vegetable farmers have improved access to markets and better terms of trade through partnerships with government and private sector.

    Purpose of The Consultancy Assignment
    The purpose of this consultancy assignment is to:

    To conduct a detailed gender analysis of identified vegetable value chains to further identify barriers and solutions to engaging women in active decision making at all levels.
    To train and support project staff on gender mainstreaming – gender sensitization and practices that effectively engage with women to help achieve the objectives of the project.

    Expected deliverables

    A gender analysis report
    Two-day training workshop for project staff
    Tools for assessing/measuring progress on gender sensitization and women’s economic empowerment.
    Post training evaluation report

    Project documentation
    Traidcraft will make available a range of relevant project documents that the consultant should refer to, primarily the approved project proposal document, the baseline survey report and progress reports.
    Timeframe
    This assignment is expected to last not more than 16 days and shall commence end March 2019 and shall be completed on or before 15th May 2019. It is however appreciated that the actual consultancy period will be determined by such developments as responsiveness of stakeholders’ and this will be communicated as the case may be.
    Required skills and experience
    To carry out the above detailed task Traidcraft is looking for an evaluator with the following skills:

    A relevant advanced degree in social science especially gender studies or relevant discipline.
    Extensive experience in applied research
    An influential communicator, with excellent written and verbal skills in both English and Kiswahili
    Over 5 years’ experience on gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment
    Practical experience of participatory training

    Proposal assessment criteria
    Traidcraft will look into the following areas in assessing the quality of the proposal submitted by the bidding consultants.
    Qualification, skills and experience of the consultant.

    Practical and demonstrable experience on gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment.
    Clarity of understanding of the task at hand as described in consultants’ own words.
    Quality and relevance of methodology proposed including adequacy of tools and approaches to be used in the analysis and training.
    Value for money including comparison of proposed costs and methodology.
    Knowledge of the sector and or the type of task required.
    Availability to commence the task quickly.
