    About the Role

    Responsibilities include:

    Identifying investment opportunities and due diligence

    Identify, cultivate, and review a pipeline of companies working to solve an important problem for low-income learners. Evaluate their model and market opportunity.
    Conducting due diligence and investment analysis, including financial modeling, valuation review, and structuring.
    Prepare and present investment documentation for Acumen East Africa’s Investment Committee
    Lead the closing of transactions including negotiations of investment conditions (i.e., price, shareholders rights) along with the investees and Acumen legal team
    Actively work to simplify terms while holding principles.

    Post Investment and Metric Evaluation

    Assess portfolio company needs related to post investment support, assess how to add value to the companies (Is it strategy? Cash flow? Operations? Talent? Where should they focus and why? How can you help?)
    Build a network of potential impact funders/investors for the technical assistance or other funding requirements of investees to scale their businesses.
    Execute on Performance Based Financing goals for our Education portfolio
    Identify Acumen community members who could represent Acumen at the board level and potentially serve on a board. 
    Actively support and lead the scheduled exit roadmap for a few portfolio companies.
    Represent Acumen on the board of Acumen’s legacy portfolio company.
    Actively support select companies on governance, finance asset management and leadership

    Knowledge Management and Thought Leadership:

    Lead the insights generation work on existing portfolio and also document it in a well formatted and succinct manner for future reference.
    Lead the Acumen East Africa team to analyze and document data-driven explanations for portfolio decisions; to extract and document investment-specific and general insights; to analyze metrics data to identify patterns; and to channel that data to outputs for marketing and fundraising efforts.
    Produce discrete knowledge and research materials based on lessons from Acumen’s portfolio 
    Manage the Education Advisory Committee and prepare the Annual Education Report
    Contribute to fundraising strategy, proposals and budgets to facilitate growth. 
    Represent Acumen East Africa’s Portfolio work at all global portfolio forums.
    Participate in development and implementation of other Acumen initiatives and projects.

    Team Leadership

    Manage 2-4 team members, coach and support them in developing investing skills related to financial modeling, relationship management, deal negotiation and post-investment support
    Work in close partnership with the East Africa Director and across the global investment teams to support sector-specific initiatives and share learning.

    This role will report to the East Africa Regional Director.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Bachelor’s Degree is required, Master’s degree preferable
    10-15 years of experience in venture capital, with preferred 7-10 years of investment experience with private equity, investment banking, or investment management, including experience with financial and operational due diligence of early-stage businesses
    Understand Performance Based Financing
    Experience with financial and operational due diligence of early-stage businesses.
    Superior financial, modeling and business analysis skills; demonstrated by prior experience.
    Solid operational skills including problem solving and project management skills, including ability to work and deliver projects independently, proactively and under pressure.
    Significant commitment or experience with the social enterprise sector in West Africa, demonstrated commitment to tackling challenges of poverty.

    Senior Investment Associate

    About The Role

    The Senior Associate will source and evaluate new investment opportunities, conduct due diligence on high potential opportunities, and assist with structuring deal terms. The Senior Associate will use their investing skills to evaluate the growth and return potential of companies from both a financial and social impact perspective. They will also prepare analysis for presentation to Acumen East Africa’s Investment Committee (“IC”).

    The Senior Associate will develop research and analysis related to Acumen East Africa’s investment portfolio and its performance, fundraising and strategic partnership initiatives, and management of portfolio operations. They will contribute to actively building and cultivating Acumen EA networks in the impact investing communities and will contribute to developing insight and communication pieces for external audiences. They will also be responsible for coordinating relationships with select portfolio companies and represent Acumen in boards as a Director or Observer.

    The Senior Associate will have the responsibility of coordinating Acumen EA impact assessments, liaising with portfolio companies and the Sixty Decibels Team (“60-db”) as needed.

    Specific Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

    Identifying investment opportunities and due diligence

    Identifying, cultivating, and reviewing a pipeline of early-stage investment opportunities providing critical services to communities in East Africa
    Conducting due diligence and investment analysis, including financial modeling, valuation review and structuring
    Preparing and presenting investment documentation for review to the Portfolio team before presenting it to Acumen East Africa Investment Committee

    Post Investment Support and Metric Evaluation

    Assess portfolio company needs related to post-investment support; design and implement post-investment interventions in coordination with senior team members.
    Design and evaluate key metrics to measure the social and financial returns on investments.
    Develop a network of advisors including funders, thought leaders, sector and functional experts to help with post investment support.
    Represent Acumen, on the boards of certain portfolio companies, in coordination with senior team members.

    Portfolio Operations

    Work with the Acumen EA team to: (i) Analyze and document data-driven explanations for portfolio decisions; (ii) Extract and document investment-specific and general insights; (iii) Analyze metrics data to identify patterns; and (iv) Channel that data to outputs for marketing and fundraising efforts.

    Impact Assessments

    Work as coordinator of relevant impact assessments undertaken by Acumen EA, liaising as needed, with relationship managers, portfolio companies and 60-db team. Coordinate the production of Social Impact reports, in coordination with senior team members and the 60-db team.

    Qualification & Skills

    At least 6 years of experience in venture capital or private equity or investment banking or management consulting or investment management, including experience with financial and operational due diligence of early-stage businesses.
    Superior financial and business analysis skills,
    Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to present arguments and analysis to Acumen management, partners, and investees.
    Ability to take initiative with research and analysis and produce valuable results in conditions of uncertainty.

    The Role

    Responsibilities

  • Accelerator Facilitator

    Accelerator Facilitator

    Job Description
    We run a range of online accelerator programs to support social and environmental entrepreneurs developing new and scaling existing ventures. Our programs are delivered remotely and are often delivered in partnership with external partners (e.g. IKEA Social Entrepreneurship) or in collaboration with our internal regional partners. Our programs are modular and learning is delivered through a mix of online curriculum materials (topic guides and readings, case-studies, videos, assignment templates), one-to-one support (coaching, mentoring or consultation) and synchronous sessions (peer learning, expert presenters).
    About The Contract

    We will contract by accelerator. Length of accelerator can vary between 10-23 weeks (accelerators run between 8 – 19 weeks but there is prep and debriefing). During these 10 – 23 weeks, we require a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week. Accountabilities include:
    Co-lead 2-hour long virtual “Learning Labs” every week with up to 30 entrepreneurs facilitating case study discussions, “hands-on” activities, and preview key concepts and assignments entrepreneurs will complete each week
    Help refine the design of “Learning Labs” and design your approach to activities
    30-minute 1:1 coaching and consultation calls with entrepreneurs to support their learning and give them feedback on their assignments. Capture and share insights from these conversations with the entrepreneurs and the Academy program team
    With the exception of the scheduled weekly 2 hour Learning Labs and regular facilitator prep call, remaining weekly work can be done at any time.

    Skills And Qualifications

    10 years of experience. Experience in lean startup methods, business modeling, and financial modeling and knowledge of the social sector are required.
    Experience supporting social enterprises and startups in one or more of the following geographies: East Africa, West Africa, Southeast Asia, or India
    Articulate presenter able to describe business concepts clearly, diagnose common mistakes made by early stage social enterprise startups, and provide constructive feedback succinctly and directly verbally and in writing.
    Facilitation and training experience online.
    Knowledge of the social impact sector and building profitable business models that create positive social or environmental impact
    Able to keep busy entrepreneurs engaged during an intensive program

    About the role
    The East Africa Associate will support the East Africa Director and maintain primary responsibility for strategic relationship management, communications and logistical support, as well as serve as a key liaison for communication with the global staff, Board of Directors, Acumen Partners, and other members of the Acumen community. 
    Specific responsibilities include:
    Scheduling and Meeting Preparation:

    Arrange and ensure seamless run of the EA Director’s daily schedule, juggling multiple, simultaneous requests across multiple time zones
    Prepare and socialize all essential logistics for the EA Director’s meetings
    Support on research and preparation for external meetings, including liaising with other teams to create meeting briefings and submitting meeting notes
    Coordinate senior management and team member schedules to ensure monthly management meetings, weekly check-ins, and other recurring internal meetings
    Schedule and proactively plan recurring internal communications touch points including EA Team weekly meetings, happy hours etc

    Administration:

    Prepare, submit and track EA Director’s time sheets; along with those of direct reports for approval

    Maintain accurate details for meetings in advance of travel, add to necessary calendars
    Understand travel preferences when booking flights, hotels, etc. and check to make sure these preferences are followed when possible, or communicated in advance when not possible

    Qualifications & Skills

    4-5 years of experience in professional environment. Experience as an Executive Assistant is preferred. 
    Strong project management skills: demonstrated ability to take primary responsibility for execution of diverse number of projects in timely manner with limited supervision
    Proactive, demonstrated 
    ability to anticipate needs and identify gaps before they arise, and jump in without being asked
    Exemplary interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with culturally diverse staff across geographies, functions and levels of the organization
    Excellent written and oral communication skills
    Self-reflective and aligned with Acumen values
    Complete discretion with sensitive information, both within the company and externally
    Proven mastery of tech apps including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Gmail, and Zoom
    Permanent authorization to work in Kenya required
