    Policy Advisor, NBS Biophysical Monitoring Systems

    The Policy Advisor, Biophysical Monitoring Systems will be responsible for developing and implementing biophysical monitoring plans to demonstrate the impact of SUNCASA’s NbS activities in three project geographies.
    The advisor will develop key partnerships, coordinate staff and partner activities, and compile results to demonstrate the biophysical impacts of NbS interventions within the timeline of the project.
    Finally, the successful candidate will aim to build local capacity by developing monitoring protocols for NbS, delivering related guidance and training, and communicating the results of the monitoring efforts in regional and other relevant forums. The successful candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team, working closely with IISD staff, affiliates, consultants, and partners.

    The successful candidate will be well-versed in land, water, and ecosystem processes and should understand the broader policy efforts surrounding NbS, adaptation to climate change, biodiversity conservation, and social equity embedded in the SUNCASA project.
    Responsibilities
    The successful candidate’s key areas of responsibility will include, but not be limited to:
    Development and Implementation of Monitoring Plans for SUNCASA’s NbS Activities

    Develop, plan, validate and coordinate monitoring efforts to understand the key impacts of the NbS activities proposed under SUNCASA.
    Work collaboratively with in-country partners, including government representatives, non-governmental organizations, and consultants, on implementing activities related to monitoring, evaluating, and adapting impacts of NbS activities toward improved ecosystem-based adaptation, including reduced flood risk, improved water availability and quality, improved biodiversity, and other biophysical outcomes.
    Design and deliver virtual and face-to-face workshops to communicate, implement, and evaluate the biophysical impacts of NbS activities across the project.
    Establish a baseline, develop robust methodologies to track benefits, and apply required methods to monitor the impacts of project NbS activities.
    Develop methods for evaluating the impact of activities incorporating quantitative and qualitative assessments as appropriate.
    Summarize and report on the impacts of NbS activities and lessons learned across the SUNCASA project geographies.
    Contribute to overall monitoring, evaluation, and learning systems for the SUNCASA project.

    Engagement and Communications

    Coordinate with multiple project partners to implement monitoring systems for ecosystem elements related to NbS activities.
    Prepare knowledge products, training resources, presentations, and materials to communicate monitoring protocols, implementation guidance, and impacts across the project team and to outside audiences.
    Share results of the project impacts through reports, webinars, conferences, and other means.
    Represent IISD at national and international forums.

    Other Tasks

    Participate in IISD Water Program meetings, business development, and other efforts.
    Contribute to strategic objectives for IISD and its Water Program, as needed.
    Work with Water Program colleagues to contribute to program budgets, reports, and communications, as needed.

    Qualifications (Essential)

    A master’s degree or equivalent in water resources or civil engineering, hydrology, natural sciences, geography, environmental planning and management, or a related field.
    Based in Ethiopia OR Rwanda OR South Africa OR Kenya, with the ability to travel regularly to these countries.
    Minimum 7 years of work experience in relevant fields, including the development and/or implementation of monitoring systems for aspects of ecosystem management.
    A strong understanding of ecosystems and watershed processes.
    Experience working with multiple partners and on large-scale projects.
    A good understanding of multiple African geographies and work systems.

    Skills (Essential)

    Technical skills related to establishing ecosystem monitoring systems for locally relevant benefits.
    Excellent quantitative data and advanced statistical analyses skills, including knowledge of designing and implementing mixed methods; data management, cleaning, visualization, along with comparative and qualitative analysis skills.
    Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing data.
    Demonstrable ability to conceptualize, implement, and report on progress against indicators.
    Ability to implement surveys, interviews and extract data from responses.
    Strong research writing skills and the ability to become familiar with new topics quickly.
    Confident and engaging communication skills and the ability to synthesize information in plain language and for different audiences.

    Skills (Desired)

    Ability to use GIS to integrate remote sensing data into ecosystem analyses.

    Strong programming skills using R, Python, MATLAB, or other relevant science-centric languages.

    Nature Finance Advisor

    The Position

    We are seeking a dedicated individual to join the sustainable finance team as part of IISD’s Infrastructure and Finance Program. The chosen candidate will support the Scaling Urban NbS for Climate Adaptation in Sub-Saharan Africa (SUNCASA) project, with a focus on the economic assessment and financing of nature-based solutions (NbS) in urban areas. The SUNCASA project is about engaging local partners and communities to design and implement NbS to support climate adaptation and biodiversity protection in urban communities and watersheds in sub-Saharan Africa. The project also aims to enhance gender-responsive and inclusive governance of NbS in these communities. A notable part of the Nature Finance Advisor’s contribution will involve using IISD’s Sustainable Asset Valuation (SAVi) methodology for projects in Rwanda, Ethiopia, and South Africa. This role will encompass contributing to assessments of nature-based infrastructure projects and building spreadsheets for delivering financial and cost-benefit analyses. The candidate will be part of a multidisciplinary team, working closely with IISD affiliates, consultants, and interlocutors in different parts of the world. The SUNCASA project is a collaboration with the World Resources Institute.

    Responsibilities
    The successful candidate’s key areas of responsibility will include but not be limited to the following:
    Research

    Undertaking substantive reviews and background research on financing policies, plans, schemes, and strategies related to NbS.
    Preparing papers and presentations that accurately synthesize and assess research findings.
    Following and summarizing news and events pertaining to finance for NbS.

    Project Implementation and Management

    Organizing training sessions and workshops on integrated cost-benefit analysis and finance for NbS.
    Coordinating with local partners on the delivery of economic- and finance-related activities.

    Communications

    Writing reports, briefs, blogs, and case studies that are “publication ready” with limited oversight and editing.
    Sharing research results through webinars, workshops, conferences, and other events.

    Business Development

    Supporting the team with the development of new project ideas and proposals to help IISD expand its engagement with funders, national governments, and international organizations on various sustainable finance topics.

    Engagement

    Working collaboratively with partners in government, the private sector, and research and non-governmental organizations, as well as with consultants.

    Required Skills
    Candidates are expected to have the following set of skills:

    In-depth understanding of the financing of NbS, including familiarity with financing mechanisms and best practices, also as they relate to developing countries and policy and planning processes.
    Experience in the economic valuation of NbS would be an asset.
    Knowledge of infrastructure finance and preferably the measuring and valuing of sustainability impacts.
    A good understanding of climate finance and just transition, including challenges and solutions to mobilize investment, would be an asset.

    About the Position

    The Senior Policy Advisor, Oil and Gas Phaseouts, will work as part of IISD’s pillar on Phasing Out Fossil Fuels, which delivers research, policy proposals, and strategic advice to support a Paris-aligned, managed phaseout of oil and gas production and the end of public finance to fossil fuels. The team collaborates with a large range of stakeholders, including civil society organizations and networks, international organizations, governments, and media. This position is based within the IISD Energy Program. The candidate will work with a diverse and dynamic team of around 50 experts based in IISD offices, as well as remotely in India, Indonesia, South Africa, and other countries.

    The Senior Policy Advisor will play a key role in the team and in the Energy Program by designing and implementing effective advocacy strategies. In particular, they will help ensure that 1) the ideas of “no new oil and gas” and “oil and gas phaseouts” are normalized in policy and investor discourse via our work on unpacking energy scenarios, and 2) commitments to end international public finance for all fossil fuels over time are adopted by an increasingly larger number of countries and institutions and implemented with integrity. They will collaborate with civil society in the Global North and South to strengthen ongoing campaigns and engage bilaterally with governments, national oil companies, public finance institutions, and investor coalitions to influence their strategic decisions. Their key areas of responsibility will include but not be limited to:

    Developing and implementing a strategy, including monitoring progress and delivering on external change objectives.
    Setting up and running projects from beginning to end in a range of countries and internationally, taking responsibility for delivering outputs, achieving objectives, staffing, reporting, and working with financial project managers.
