    Project Overview
    The project is implemented in three landscapes (Sabarwawa, Mid Tana and Chyulu Hills) spanning 11 counties. These target landscapes face a range of challenges including weak capacity for landscape planning, poor access to climate data and analysis, and limited access to markets and financial services. Implementation of the TWENDE project is through three components:

    Component 1: Climate change adapted planning for drought resilience – The component ensures coordinated transboundary rangeland management decisions are strengthened by enhanced climate change analysis and participatory community and county planning. The component contributes to addressing the barriers of weak capabilities and inadequate governance institutions. National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) is the executing entity for this component.
    Component 2: Restoration of rangeland landscapes for ecosystem-based adaptation – The components main output is to ensure prioritized rangeland resources (including water), are brought under restoration, safeguarded and sustainably managed for improved climate change resilience. Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries is the executing entity for this component.
    Component 3: Climate change resilient ecosystem management for investments – Main focus is public, private and community investments in natural resources, addressing barriers related to insufficient investment in rangelands and poor access to markets and financial services. Conservation International is the executing entity for component 3.
    The assignment will be conducted within a period of 5 months (negotiable) between 10th April to 9th September 2022.

    Support and facilitate strategic alignment efforts and activities between rangelands work and experience across Africa Region within the Africa Rangelands Program (ARP).
    Support continental or regional scientific research projects that will promote the work and objectives of the ARP.
    Collaborate closely with the Herding 4 Health Program team to facilitate and adapt H4H model implementation as and where relevant in the East African context in ways that will build and expand the model’s applicability to support holistic impact in rangelands in E. Africa.
    Build strategic partnerships and strategies for delivery of animal health and production incentives, wildlife – livestock co-existence, value chain development, and improved rangeland management within communally owned ranches and conservancies.
    Support development of specialist training required for teams, stakeholders, and implementing partners in rangelands projects as well as the partnerships and agencies to offer such training services.
    Support and lead the expansion and amplification of the ARP into the East African region.
    Work directly with Country Directors and Project leads to ensure delivery excellence in all Rangelands-related work.
    Work directly with thematic and scientific leads to enable a ‘teams of teams” approach to multifaceted interventions (especially with regards to Climate Adaption/policy, Forest Restoration, Carbon Finance, and Biodiversity Conservation.
    Deliver the multi-year – GCF TWENDE restoration-related activities and the restoration components of the RRC project in the Chyulus.
    Directly supervise program and project staff as required, including overseeing the work of external partners.
    Manage the program’s budget and finances.
    Manage public or private funds; ensure compliance with donor requirements and CI policies.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    This position is based in Nairobi, Kenya.
    Working outside normal working hours. Ability to travel frequently in remote areas and in the forest.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Bachelor’s Degree in Ecology, Wildlife Management, Rangeland Science, Science Animal Science, Zoology, or Veterinary Science is preferred.
    7 or more years experience working in East African rangelands projects, preferably Kenya, with a very good understanding of East African cultures, governance and policy, ecological context, and stakeholder networks.
    Program or project management experience, preferably in the global conservation, NGO, advocacy, or related for-profit arena.
    Excellent technical and analytical skills.
    Excellent organization and time management skills.
    2 or more years of experience supervising others including multi-disciplinary teams.

    POSITION SUMMARY
    The Finance and Grants Manager Regional Projects Kenya manages all financial and administrative functions and is responsible for overseeing the efficient and effective management of sub-grants and contract-related activities of selected regional projects managed from the Kenya Regional Office.  They are responsible for generating financial reports, data entry, and analysis.  Working closely with project leads, external partners, and other CI Staff to ensure smooth operations of financial functions and compliance with CI’s financial and /or donor reporting policies requirements as well as providing oversight and management of grant-making activities including planning and application activities, contracting, day-to-day administration, reporting, and close-out. The Finance and Grants Manager – Regional Projects  Kenya oversees the efficient management of a variety of accounting, finance, and grants-related functions as assigned.
    The Manager generates standard and ad-hoc project financial reports and ensures the accuracy, integrity, and timelines of all financial information. They oversee internal and donor financial reporting processes including managing the budget, revenue, and cash projections, donor financial compliance, and project audit follow-up. Serves as the primary point of contact for assigned projects regarding financial processes and reporting. They will work closely with other operations staff within the division  Program staff as well as HQ  Finance to ensure financial best practices are followed.
    The Finance and Grants Manager reviews grants applications, proposals, agreements, and related grants data and ensures the accuracy of the information in the grants system/database. They will perform financial monitoring of grant activities, reviews financial reports submitted by partners, and generate timely internal and external financial and related reports. The Finance and Grants Manager works to minimize risk to CI and reviews grants-related activities for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with CI and grantor policies and procedures. They provide follow-up on any issues identified during the monitoring and review process and assist with training and capacity-building efforts. 
    The  Finance and Grants Manager is a key information resource responsible for ensuring effective communications with all key stakeholders.  They compile information and respond to requests from partners and program and HQ staff and maintain complete, accurate, and up-to-date filing and tracking systems. 
    The Finance and Grants Manager does not directly manage staff. Duties are performed under general supervision of the Operations Director Regional Programs. As directed, the Finance and Grants Manager provides ad-hoc analysis and forecasts to help management identify and secure new funding streams. They must multitask, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
    RESPONSIBILITIES
    Financial Reporting and Analysis:

    Review and process invoices, financial transactions, and recurring/non-recurring journal entries.
    Review transactions for completeness, accuracy, and proper documentation and approvals prior to processing.
    Post transactions to the general and subsidiary ledgers. 
    Prepare and generate monthly, quarterly, and periodic financial reports and review results with project leads and Senior Management.
    Manage the internal revenue allocation process, ensuring CI’s financial systems accurately reflect agreed-upon allocations.
    Prepare donor statements and reports for management review prior to release to fund managers, external partners, key donors, and related stakeholders.
    Monitor and project cash balances for all relevant donor programs.
    Ensure the effective and efficient stewardship of projects assets and financial resources. 
    Manage project audits and ensure that audit findings are recommendations are addressed and implemented.
    Manage other financial issues that arise, including risk management.
    Manage and coordinate the annual budget process. Serve as the primary point of contact for the budget process.  Provide training, instructions, and hands-on guidance as needed.  
    Ensure financial/budgetary systems are kept up to date. Generate budget vs. actual comparisons and provide trend analysis. 
    Facilitate timely and complete inputs from cost center managers to ensure the ongoing accuracy of the department budget. Update projections as appropriate.
    Act as the gatekeeper for budget expenditure requests. As authorized, approve procurement and related expenditures requests.

    Grant Award and Contracts:

    Develop materials and manage announcements of grants and subcontract opportunities.
    Conduct preliminary reviews of grantee technical and financial reports.  Coordinate site visits/desk reviews as needed. 
    Monitor proposals including project approval/rejection and overall project status. Keep senior staff informed of deadlines, targets, and workflow changes.
    Coordinate legal/HQ review of agreements and review that all necessary signatures are in place.
    Process contracts amendments and additions.
    Coordinate grants close-out activities as directed.

    Grants Administration and Monitoring:

    Ensure complete, accurate, and timely data and information is maintained in the grants system Work with system administrators to resolve recording issues and recommend system improvements and efficiencies as needed. 
    Cultivate a collaborative working relationship with grantees, to facilitate an effective flow of communication and timely reporting.
    Process routine financial transactions including check requests.
    Assist in providing timely, accurate, and relevant reporting, including budget to actual comparisons and status reports.
    Monitor existing grants for compliance with grant agreements and CI policies and procedures.
    Assist grantees/consultants with routine financial, compliance, and system reporting questions. Provide training and support as directed.
    Serve as primary contact and manage day-to-day interactions with grantees and program, field, and HQ colleagues.  
    Maintain hard copy and electronic agreements and related files.

    POSITION SUMMARY
    Conservation International is one of the global leaders in using nature-based solutions to combat climate change. There is significant growth in the demand for high-quality conservation projects that can access the voluntary and compliance carbon markets via REDD+, Restoration, and Blue Carbon mechanisms, in particular. Conservation International is expecting to rapidly expand its portfolio of REDD+, Restoration, and Blue Carbon initiatives, which go beyond protecting forests and biodiversity, by integrating sustainable production and focusing on improving human well-being. 
    CI’s Conservation Finance Division is seeking two Carbon Technical Managers to assist in developing a pipeline of new investable avoided deforestation, and restoration, site- and jurisdictional-scale initiatives globally. The Manager will be responsible for conducting project feasibility assessments, conducting field visits, and moving priority opportunities to full-scale development including, responsibility for the Project Description Documents (PDD). In addition, the manager will manage and work across-CI divisions to assure technical accuracy and timely progress through the validation and verification processes for those projects being certified to voluntary market standards like the VCS and CCB, or compliance markets, such as Japan’s Joint Crediting Mechanism. 
    The Manager will be working in close collaboration with the Senior Technical Director Projects at Head Office and the Regional Technical Director at African Field Division, as well as CI’s country offices globally, various external stakeholders, partners and consultants, and CI’s Conservation Finance Division and Natural Climate Solutions Center in Arlington, to ensure alignment between regional and global strategies. 
    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Assist in the design of a process to develop carbon projects aiming to achieve voluntary market standard certification. Develop tools, frameworks, and templates to streamline the data gathering, analysis, and narrative of the elements of the Project Design Document (PDD) and Monitoring and Implementation Reports (MIR), including but not limited to biodiversity and community monitoring, stakeholder engagement, benefits sharing mechanism plans, emissions reduction or removal models and financial models. Building and maintain a network of specialists that contributes to specific aspects of the PDD and MIR.
    Conduct the full technical development of viable carbon finance projects in conjunction with relevant project staff. This includes but is not limited to developing carbon emissions baseline and project scenarios, developing appropriate MRV protocols, contributing to the identification and design of field implementation activities, contribute to writing project certification documents including PDDs and MIRs, designing and managing work plans and budgets for technical activities related to carbon project development, and leading projects through audit and validation/verification processes. Conduct site visits and carbon due diligence, as needed.
    Develop and maintain CI’s relationships with partners to enhance collaboration and partnership initiatives, continually look for opportunities to strengthen capacity building and partnership effort.
    Work with CI field offices, Natural Climate Solutions Center, and Conservation Finance Division to ensure alignment of strategies and priorities. Provide periodic reports and assessments on progress against project development for an internal audience (e.g. update and maintain the project pipeline database, as well as other duties as assigned by supervisor.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    One of the positions will be based in Africa and the other one in Latin America. 
    Frequent travel within the region will be required, often this will entail travel to remote locations with rustic conditions
     A flexible work schedule is required in order to accommodate time differences between the Arlington, VA office and international field offices located in multiple time zones.

    POSITION SUMMARY
    CI seeks a Global Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) Fellow to integrate equity, inclusion, and diversity in conservation. Reporting to the Vice President of Project Delivery and Monitoring (PDM) and working closely with the Senior Director of GEDI. The GEDI Fellow will have a unique opportunity to partner in the development of CI’s organizational GEDI plan.
    Leveraging their expertise in field-based conservation and the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, the GEDI Fellow will scope the key drivers of imbalance in the projects where CI works around the world. This may include identifying substantive barriers related to colonialization, weak governance or corruption, or lack of inclusion or discrimination of vulnerable or underrepresented populations. The Fellow will clearly define and frame what GEDI within conservation looks like to advance our mission of achieving fair and equitable conservation and human well-being results. The successful candidate will have the knowledge and collaboration skills to evolve and partner on our institutional GEDI effort with other key stakeholders.
    The GEDI Fellowship is part of the Lui-Walton Technical Fellowship program, which requires a two (2) year commitment. The program engages experts to provide fresh thinking and extensive leadership to CI’s programs around the world. CI provides opportunities to expand the breadth of the Fellow’s professional skills and experience through collaboration with a global network of subject matter experts across disciplines.
    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Develop an understanding of current programs, practices, and policies that underpin GEDI-related efforts both within CI and extending through our project work in 28 countries.
    Learn from, partner, and build on our work to advance internal GEDI practices, our rights-based approach and safeguards project design and implementation efforts, and our Gender Program and Indigenous and Traditional Peoples Program.
    Assess CI programs to define the entry points and good practice standards for integrating and embedding equity, inclusion, diversity in conservation.
    Scope interventions and potential activities to be considered by CI field projects.

    POSITION SUMMARY
    Amid growing consensus that the protection, restoration, and improved management of ecosystems can provide at least 30% of the climate mitigation needed to limit warming to 1.5°C, Conservation International (CI) has set ambitious targets to realize the potential of these natural climate solutions (NCS) worldwide. 
    The Africa (Field Division) – Senior Director Carbon Team will develop and lead a carbon deal team that can identify, design and execute new NCS projects in Africa in coordination with CI country programs (South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, Liberia) and our partner network in non-presence countries. This includes emissions reductions and other categories of CI’s Climate Strategy. 
    To be successful, the Senior Director needs extensive knowledge and experience on climate change, forest, rangeland and blue carbon ecosystems, as well as demonstrated experience in the development of conservation finance and carbon deals, especially REDD+. The Senior Director must work productively with external partners in the private sector, government, and civil society. They must be able to articulate an actionable plan for developing a pipeline of new, high quality emissions reductions and restoration projects (both from environmental and social perspectives) at scale and comfortable sharing and driving that vision with Conservation International staff, leadership, and board, in high-level forums, with potential funding partners, and with the implementing programs and partners to drive ongoing buy-in, resourcing, and execution. The role will require a breadth of skills across a variety of topics including business management, project management, finance, science, policy, markets and technology.
    The Senior Director Carbon Team works closely with field programs across Africa as well as the Center for Natural Climate Solutions and other relevant Conservation International divisions.
    RESPONSIBILITIES
    Build and lead a regional team to originate and structure new emission reduction and/or carbon-crediting projects eligible under voluntary and compliance carbon schemes, including: 

    Assist and/or lead the strategic and technical development of CI “flagship” carbon projects in the region that incorporate all aspects of high-quality NCS projects including deep local and indigenous community engagement and partnership, protection of all key ecological attributes, engagement of government and other stakeholders, and implementation of robust monitoring and verification approaches.  
    Build high-quality project pipeline with key external partners including NGOs, governments, local communities and private developers; identify and engage a network of project developers, implementation partners and local and international NGOs; ensure high-quality NCS project pipeline with partners and facilitate monitoring and verification, high-quality technical standards and appropriate community and other safeguards. 
    Design and implement sub-national and/or jurisdictional carbon financing facilities in partnership with governments, NGOs, financial institutions and other strategic partners that provide governance and financial instruments to drive NBS in key geographies.  

    Fundraising and External Engagement

    Contribute to CI’s Climate fundraising efforts to support the full implementation of the Climate strategy; communicate with strategic private sector partners and link NCS projects with external partners
    Support development of major public (GEF, GCF) fundraising proposals, and advise on public funding programs with substantial NCS project components.
    Provide strategic thought leadership, including engagement at international forums, engagement with government, and be an external spokesperson for CI

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    The position is based in Nairobi or any other major CI city/hub in Africa (Liberia, South Africa, Madagascar, Botswana).
    Travel time up to 50%.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    Amid growing consensus that the protection, restoration, and improved management of ecosystems can provide at least 30% of the climate mitigation needed to limit warming to 1.5°C, Conservation International (CI) has set ambitious targets to realize the potential of these natural climate solutions (NCS) worldwide. 

    The Africa (Field Division) – Senior Director Carbon Team will develop and lead a carbon deal team that can identify, design and execute new NCS projects in Africa in coordination with CI country programs (South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Madagascar, Liberia) and our partner network in non-presence countries. This includes emissions reductions and other categories of CI’s Climate Strategy. 

    To be successful, the Senior Director needs extensive knowledge and experience on climate change, forest, rangeland and blue carbon ecosystems, as well as demonstrated experience in the development of conservation finance and carbon deals, especially REDD+. The Senior Director must work productively with external partners in the private sector, government, and civil society. They must be able to articulate an actionable plan for developing a pipeline of new, high quality emissions reductions and restoration projects (both from environmental and social perspectives) at scale and comfortable sharing and driving that vision with Conservation International staff, leadership, and board, in high-level forums, with potential funding partners, and with the implementing programs and partners to drive ongoing buy-in, resourcing, and execution. The role will require a breadth of skills across a variety of topics including business management, project management, finance, science, policy, markets and technology.

    The Senior Director Carbon Team works closely with field programs across Africa as well as the Center for Natural Climate Solutions and other relevant Conservation International divisions.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Build and lead a regional team to originate and structure new emission reduction and/or carbon-crediting projects eligible under voluntary and compliance carbon schemes, including: 

    Assist and/or lead the strategic and technical development of CI “flagship” carbon projects in the region that incorporate all aspects of high-quality NCS projects including deep local and indigenous community engagement and partnership, protection of all key ecological attributes, engagement of government and other stakeholders, and implementation of robust monitoring and verification approaches.  
    Build high-quality project pipeline with key external partners including NGOs, governments, local communities and private developers; identify and engage a network of project developers, implementation partners and local and international NGOs; ensure high-quality NCS project pipeline with partners and facilitate monitoring and verification, high-quality technical standards and appropriate community and other safeguards. 
    Design and implement sub-national and/or jurisdictional carbon financing facilities in partnership with governments, NGOs, financial institutions and other strategic partners that provide governance and financial instruments to drive NBS in key geographies.  

    Fundraising and External Engagement

    Contribute to CI’s Climate fundraising efforts to support the full implementation of the Climate strategy; communicate with strategic private sector partners and link NCS projects with external partners
    Support development of major public (GEF, GCF) fundraising proposals, and advise on public funding programs with substantial NCS project components.
    Provide strategic thought leadership, including engagement at international forums, engagement with government, and be an external spokesperson for CI

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    The position is based in Nairobi or any other major CI city/hub in Africa (Liberia, South Africa, Madagascar, Botswana).
    Travel time up to 50%.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Required

    Graduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. environmental science, law or business) 
    Strong experience on climate-related issues including experience with carbon transactions (origination and implementation) and track record of success in Africa
    Evidence of a focus on collaboration and a strong network of individuals and institutions in restoration and climate, including experience convening a broad range of individuals.
    Demonstrated carbon finance knowledge and experience, including voluntary markets, and use of high-quality standards such as Verra, Climate Community & Biodiversity Standards etc
    Ability to effectively work in a team across the full diversity of CI’s global organization.
    Demonstrated track record of working effectively with multicultural, multidisciplinary teams to produce concrete results, including strong capacity to navigate diversity, equity, and inclusion challenges and opportunities.
    Excellent oral and written skills in English

    Strong communication and facilitation skills (oral, written and presentation skills); and

The Vice President, Global Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will formalize, develop, and create programs and processes designed to build a more diverse and inclusive culture at CI. The successful candidate will prioritize DEI principles and leverage best practices to create a diverse global organization. The VP will play a role in providing guidance on recruiting diverse candidates and underrepresented minorities for open positions, supporting our staff with a culture of career development, safety, and inclusion, and developing and campaign programs to support DEI across the communities we work in.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Partner with DEI Fellow to design and implement DEI infrastructure (tools, templates, databases, technology solutions, etc.) to embed DEI into core HR and field programs. Partner with Fellow to develop a tool to capture organizational demographics.
    Identify metrics and strategies to assess the effectiveness and impact of our efforts and initiatives in achieving our DEI mission and goals.
    Assist with leading CI’s institution-wide Employee Resource Groups (ERG) program.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Required

    Advanced degree up to and including a Ph.D. in a related discipline

    Conservation International is seeking an experienced professional to provide oversight for field office grants and contracts. Reporting to the Vice President of Grants and Contracts, the Regional Grants and Contracts Director will be a critical partner to CI’s country programs, serving as a technical expert and providing oversight to the region while also identifying improvements and building capacity. The Director will be a critical partner to the region, interacting with field offices and all levels of staff to promote dialogue, learn, listen, and bring support and solutions. This Africa/Asia Pacific position may be based in CI’s offices in Kenya or the Philippines.
    The Regional Grants and Contracts Director contributes to establishing practices, reviews, guidance, dialogue, and other actions to ensure operational excellence in grants and contracts management in CI field programs. The Director has primary responsibility for identifying compliance risks within the region and partnering with the country programs for resolution. The position will build capacity and mentor existing staff in grants and contracts management, while also providing direct intervention assistance to grants and contracts selection and management for select programs.
    The Director provides technical procurement expertise on policies, procedures, systems, documentation, and standards to assist internal and external stakeholders undertaking procurement planning, development, sourcing, and management. The role educates CI staff and sub-grantees on procurement integrity and provides assistance in interpreting, applying, and ensuring compliance with donor obligation, organizational policies, and industry best practices. In addition, this position will be directly involved with conducting procurement of consultants for select field offices, providing direct assistance to field programs in the drafting of procurement documents and selection processes, ensuring strong systems are in place to manage and monitor contracts for goods and services and providing high-quality training to staff and sub-grantees. The position also has responsibility for grant-making operations, matters relating to grantee risk management and compliance, and stewardship of donor funds.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    For lower volume field offices or offices that do not have dedicated grants or contracts staff, lead or support the evaluation, selection, and pre-award process for grant awards and the solicitation, selection and contracting process. support the operations staff to review financial reports, project audits, and troubleshoot issues of non-compliance Conduct Site Visits on behalf of field and global programs as needed. 
    For higher volume offices, participate in and review the high value-high risk grant awards and procurements and advise Operations Directors on modifications to the process needed based on CI or donor policy requirements. 
    Work with CI offices to identify and address weaknesses in proposed or existing grantee’s administrative and financial management systems and practices, developing a plan for addressing these capacity gaps before and during the grant award. Oversee or implement mandatory new grantee orientation for all new grants awarded. 
    Identify training needs for existing field staff. Establish a training tracking system and schedule. Support the training and onboarding for all new grants/contracts/procurement staff hired in the field + technical staff with involvement in grants/contracts/procurement. Conduct donor-specific requirement training for the programs.
    Standardize the job descriptions of grants and contracts staff in the field, adapting these requirements to the context of each country, and building capacity when needed to allow that the function is exercised with the same level of efficiency. 
    Facilitate the creation of peer-to-peer mentoring relationships of staff in the subject area across the region and identify high performers to cross-train staff in their own offices and other offices across the region.
    Collaborate with Finance to refine protocols for assessing and identifying portfolio risks for high risk/high profile contracts, grants, and donors. Follow established escalation procedures when identified risks cannot be mitigated.
    Conduct regular review and site assessment for grants awarded to Government partners. Compile observations, findings, and convene key stakeholders for discussion and decision-making when necessary.
    Serve as technical expert and trainer for CI financial and grants management systems

    QUALIFICATIONS
    Required

    Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a finance-related field.
    7 years of experience in a not-for-profit setting working in grants, procurement, or finance.
    Experience with the US government and/or multi-lateral donor rules and regulations applicable to sub-grants and sub-contracts
    Experience in a matrix management environment
    Experience mentoring or training staff or implementing partners
    Excellent communication skills and persuasiveness in presenting, negotiating, influencing, and resolving highly complex issues, both orally and in writing.
    Strong computer skills including intermediate Excel, familiarity with databases, and cloud-based document management systems and collaboration tools.
