    The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking to recruit a highly talented Communication Assistant on a consultancy basis.**
    The Position: The consultant will support the role of the Regional Communications Specialist to ensure continuous generation of content to highlight research for development work in SSA. He/she will follow through on communication related administrative tasks geared towards content generation and dissemination with colleagues and partners. Specific tasks will include support preparation of stories and communications about CIP and its research programs in Africa; producing short promotional videos based on interviews with key scientists; photography to capture and promote ongoing work as well as during project meetings; preparing social media posts for Facebook, Twitter and Instagram under the direction of the social media team based at CIP headquarters.
    Key responsibilities:

    Social media: Working closely with CIP’s social media managers based in Lima, generate, edit publish and schedule daily content (photos, videos, infographics) that increases share of voice and engagement across the region.
    Media: Media monitoring of CIP mentions/ relevant subjects in SSA and sharing/ repromoting content. Compile media briefs/ information packs with relevant content during media field tours. Logistical support during such tours.
    Administrative support – follow through on logistics that come with multimedia related visits by consultants and communications colleagues in the region.
    Photography and video editing – during meetings/ trainings/ field visits. Maintain photo archive on Chorus and Flickr.
    Events: provide logistical support for events in the region.
    Content creation: Working closely with the Regional Communications Specialist, generate content to showcase CIP’s impact on the ground through photo and video stories; blog writing.
    Helping with other communications tasks as assigned by the Regional Communications Specialist.

    Selection Criteria:

    Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field.
    At least 1 (one) year of experience required at internship level.
    Experience in social media management, photography, video editing, administrative management.
    Intermediate level of MS Office.
    Fluent in Kiswahili.

  • Social Scientist (Qualitative Methods)

    Social Scientist (Qualitative Methods)

    About the position:
    The Social Scientist will ensure that CIP’s ongoing and evolving research and development programs will apply methodologies and insight from qualitative social science, including gender research, so that they can contribute effectively to global development challenges. Secondly, the Social Scientist will ensure that this research is carried out at excellent standards, results in impactful publications, and can influence future research and policy design. The position will be part of CIP’s global Social and Nutrition Sciences Division and will work closely with scientists across disciplines and countries and with the CGIAR gender platform. The position at least initially has a focus on research programs in Africa and South Asia but is relevant for all of CIP’s programs. The position will report to one of CIP’s global program leaders and will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.
    Key responsibilities:

    Provide science leadership across CIP’s program portfolio for the application of qualitative social science to addressing strategic research questions related to human and institutional behavior change in the context of dietary, nutrition and agri-food systems transformation.
    Work closely with scientists and project teams to identify key social science research priorities in current and evolving projects and develop research strategies and plans for addressing these.
    Specifically, design and implement research on gender and social inclusion within the context of new and expanding technology development and delivery projects for sweetpotato and related agri-food systems and contribute significantly to the CGIAR gender platform.
    Produce peer-reviewed publications as lead author and contributing author in high quality journals, based on this research.
    Develop and manage productive research partnerships with universities and research institutes of international stature.
    Contribute to program reporting and communications with development partners to ensure that findings from qualitative social research help strengthen CIP’s credibility and influence.

    Who are we looking for?

    PhD in a relevant social science discipline with a strong focus on qualitative methodologies.
    Excellent and up-to-date understanding of qualitative research methods pertinent to the study of behavior change, gender, social inclusiveness, youth, risks and benefits from technology change, and institutional transformation.
    At least 5 years’ experience of leading qualitative social research in an international program environment, preferably within the agriculture, food or rural development sector.
    Strong understanding of the social, cultural and economic context of poverty, food insecurity, malnutrition, and social marginalization in Africa and South Asia.
    Excellent skills in research design, coordination of research teams, timely analysis, writing and presentation.
    Excellent track record of original research and peer-reviewed publications based on qualitative social science methodologies.
    Excellent leadership skills to promote effective collaboration within research teams and across research partnerships.

    About the position:
    This position will partner with expert teams both within and outside of CIP from disciplines such as plant breeding, genomics and bioinformatics, plant physiology, phenomics and crop modelling. The Scientist will support the deployment in breeding programs of genetic and genomic resources, populations and varieties to enhance productivity in diverse tropical, subtropical and temperate environments and cropping systems. The Scientist will be based in Uganda or Kenya and will report to the Crop Improvement Global Leader, with frequent international travel to the geographies where CIP research programs operate, namely sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and Latin America.
    Key responsibilities:

    Exerts independent, state of the art management, scientific leadership and creativity when initiating, designing, executing and documenting research.
    Conducts research in potato and sweetpotato to design molecular breeding and quantitative genetic strategies.
    Serves as a Principal Investigator and establishes collaborative research initiatives to identify traits of interest at the field level, establish marker-trait associations, and improve understanding of the genetic basis of such traits.
    Designs, executes and publishes in scientific journals research for QTL/association mapping, marker-assisted breeding and genomic selection, including collection of large phenotypic and molecular data, statistical analyses and data interpretation, in close collaboration with CIP’s global and regional breeding teams and external collaborators.

    Requirements

    PhD in quantitative genetics, molecular genetics or plant breeding plus at least five years of professional or post-doctoral experience.
    Familiarity with large-scale field phenotyping, plant response to environment and G x E interactions.
    Understanding of and experience with current molecular breeding approaches Understanding of and experience with bioinformatics, database development and electronic data capture techniques related to applied plant breeding/molecular breeding.

    Ref.: 2019/015/NRS/KE/SSAThe International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking to recruit a highly skilled, results-oriented Logistics Officer to provide logistics and procurement support to CIP Sub-Sahara Africa Region.The Position: The Logistics officer will be based at the CIP Regional Office in Nairobi, Kenya, and report to the Head of Project Management Unit and co report to the Logistics Manager based in Lima.Key Responsibilities

    Regional strategic thinking on implementing a holistic supply chain system, procurement planning, budgeting (and start-up planning for projects), capacity building for countries and partners on areas of supply chain/ procurement for various donors;
    Supervise supply chain officers to deliver quality, timely, effective and efficient support to research;
    In liaison with the Logistics Senior Manager in HQ, update the procurement policies within CIP to facilitate result-based management;
    Negotiation with Suppliers long term contracts;
    Identification of new suppliers for Africa;
    Follow carefully EU, USAID, African Development Bank Rules and Regulations as requested;
    Implement the Purchase Plan per year for each project in coordination with the PIs and the Logistics Senior Manager;

    Procurement

    Facilitate procurement planning with all budget holders to ensure timely procurement of goods and services;

    Ensure suppliers are formally pre-qualified prior to inclusion on suppliers list;
